TPPP 124: Catacombs of Paris | Another Ossuary, Another Skeleton Monster, Another Dime

Welcome one and all to the beautiful city of Paris! To our right, we see the Eiffel Tower! To our left, the fancy pyramid known as the Louvre! And to our right, and all below us, we see the Catacombs of Paris! All 200 miles of them! And they are the subject of this episode of The Possibly Paranormal Podcast!

Enjoy the catacombs with your favorite historian and possible scientist, Lisa, as she explain to us how a corpse is swallowed into the ground. Listen to Davis, as, in between gasps, he tries to trick Jake and Lisa with words of various origins. And listen as Jake regales us with a story about the scariest things in the catacombs, including what some would call a skeleton monster.

So, grab your history book on the French Revolution. And while you're at it, get me a croissant, too. We can eat them on our way to the Catacombs of Paris for the 124th episode of The Possibly Paranormal Podcast! TPPP 124: Catacombs of Paris.

Episode 58 As Above So Below (2014)

Episode 58 As Above So Below (2014)

Co-hosts Jamie and Rob but heads over the  genre mashup film "As Above So Below". A 2014 John Erick Dowdle film, it combines a little Blair Witch handheld horror, with a sprinkle of Harry Potter magic with a few heaping table spoons of Indiana Jones mystery and adventure to cook up a unique, although somewhat muddy, voyage into the gates of Hell under the Paris Catacombs. What genre does this film lean on the most and does it succeed? Is the lead character a charming female Indiana Jones or a narcissist who puts others in constant danger? When does the supernatural stuff start in this film and why? Who the hell is Zed?! Is the handheld horror movie genre over? Will Rob pronounce "Iran" properly by the end of the pod? You might want to stand on your head while listening to this one because it's about to get inverted in ʍolǝq oS ǝʌoq∀ s∀.

Episode 194: Fantastic French Thrillers w/ Not Your Final Girl

Episode 194: Fantastic French Thrillers w/ Not Your Final Girl

Deep Fear is a French-Belgium co-production about three friends who are spending one last day together. One of them is going into the military the next day, so they want this day to be a special one. They decide to take a trip through the Paris catacombs. What is an exciting idea on the surface turns into their worst nightmares.

Unsurprisingly, there are lots of tight moments that give a feeling of claustrophobia. While Aril enjoys cave horror, Blake does not like the feeling of getting caught in closed quarters. But did Deep Fear do enough to make either of them feel anything? We also talk about whether the horror aspects worked and the surprising lack of a sense of urgency.

Despite its flaws, Deep Fear does a lot of things right. The setting is great and the film does a great job with lighting and shadows. The characters are well-written and there is great attention to detail. Do the pros outweigh the cons or were we all left to disappointed by the narrative?

Some Like it Rare also struck a chord with two of us. Nathaniel cannot stand cannibal movies (Thanks, Cannibal Holocaust) while Candance really enjoys them. But what happens when a cannibal movie subverts expectations and becomes more about people staying together than eating each other?

The four of us also debate the film's dark humor, discuss why it is an anti-message movie, and talk about the decision-making of the characters. Since it is a cannibal movie, we also wonder if human flesh tastes good. Plus, a conversation on actually being grossed out versus thinking about it.

    What's Beneath Our Feet?

    What's Beneath Our Feet?

Decades ago my big brother attended a conference at the University of Toronto in the dead of winter. He told me about their extensive tunnel system that connects the city and university, sparing people from having to walk above ground in the sub-zero climes. As young kids whenever we traveled over the Cascade Mountains, we begged Mom to take us on the Underground Seattle tour. From the Catacombs of Paris to rumors of underground alien bases to a town built beneath Umatilla, Oregon where immigrants were sequestered after sunset because of racist laws of old, I’m hooked. What else lies beneath our feet?

This week we'll explore a cross-section of earth beneath bustling NYC then explore other secrets beneath the surface across the globe. By the episode's conclusion, I hope you discover a curiosity for what exists beneath your feet!

    Kafka on the Dork

    Kafka on the Dork

Lexi & Ben get literary AF with their first ever book club episode! Dork book club? Book dork club? Whatever. Listen in as they dork out about some of the formative books that made them the dorks they are today.

    SHOW NOTES:

    Books we talked about:

    Important references:

    BONUS MATERIAL:

Producer Jess' formative book picks and explanations:

    • Howl's Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones. I wasn't really much of a reader until I was turned on to the Harry Potter series, but this was the first book I read before even those ones that made me interested in fantasy, and was ultimately what put me on the path of being a lifelong book lover (Gail Carson Levine also falls under this umbrella as another kickass fairytale fantasy writer)
    • A Complicated Kindness, Miriam Toews. I think YA is grossly underrated and books like this prove that; I also think the idea that YA has to have a happy ending is ridiculous and this is a book that proves that because it's decidedly melancholic throughout all the way to the end (but honestly that is how teenagerdom felt for me, so I appreciate that)
    • Nightwood, Djuna Barnes. From a stylistic perspective it's unlike any other book I've ever read (it's a story with no plot, really - contemporary of TS Eliot if that gives any context) and it fundamentally changed the way I think about love and sexuality
    • The Waves, Virginia Woolf. My favourite of Woolf's work, this is the first time I ever got to read an experience of depression that felt like my own
    • The Good Earth, Pearl S. Buck. Yes, this is an Oprah Book Club book that was given to me by my mother as an "easy read" because I was feeling overwhelmed crushing out a shitload of classics readings in my undergrad, but this is a book that I re-read probably once a year. It just kind of makes you feel good despite the fact that it's about the cyclical folly of man, and I love that
    • Difficult Women, Roxane Gay - I love short stories as much as I love novels, and this is one of the best collections I've ever read, period. Every single one of these stories completely captures the terror and power of what it means to be a woman
    • Grief is the Thing with Feathers, Max Porter - I don't think I've ever cried so hard reading before (like had to stop because I couldn't see the page crying) but you feel really cathartically better after because if you've ever experienced any death in your life this is a heartbreakingly true articulation of how truly awful it is to lose someone you love

Catacombs .....  When the producer of my show comes to me and says I need to do an episode with their 18 year old employee for a special halloween episode and that I need to be drunk for it I agree.  The crew would not tell me anything about Luke's adventure beforehand because they want to see my reaction.  Oh was there is a reaction and they were right I did need to be drunk for this story of an Airbnb from hell.
