Ep. 80 - Remapping, Electoralism, & Challenging the Border Myth ft. Stephanie Skora

BrownTown chops it up about electoral politics, the remap process post-2020 Census, borders and anti-Zionism, and much more with repeat guest (Ep. 60) Stephanie Skora, movement worker and creator of the popular "Girl, I Guess" Progressive Voter Guide. The gang again takes on the nuances of engaging in electoralism while holding radical politics and the importance international solidarity between colonized peoples. Originally recorded May 16, 2022, before the new Chicago ward map was approved.

Spring 2022 marks two years since the most recent Census where the new representational map of our political reality has changed to, so we’re told, better reflect our lived populations. It has also been one year after renewed worldwide attention on the Israeli occupation, specifically in the Palestenian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. How do we place the remap process within the broader system of American electoralism, for better or worse? More broadly, how do we conceptualize not only the invisible lines of representational democracy based on population in America but also the more militarily enforced borders that manufacture our economic and political reality to justify the state’s existence, globally? This is their take.

Bishop of Brownsville announces census outreach effort

Bishop of Brownsville announces census outreach effort

SAN JUAN, Texas - Bishop Daniel Flores is urging parishioners to complete their 2020 Census form.

Flores held a news conference at the Basilica in San Juan on Wednesday to announce the census outreach the Diocese of Brownsville will be doing between now and the Sept. 30 deadline.

“We want to get the word out about how important this is for the (Rio Grande) Valley,” Flores said.

He pointed out that the region’s representation on Congress can be weakened if a full and accurate census count is not taken. He also said that much of the federal funding that comes to the Valley is based on the size of its population.

Flores said he is encouraging every priest at every parish to promote Census participation through multiple actions. These include:

    • Announcements at the beginning and/or end of Mass

    • Awareness and reminders through any parish gatherings, in person or online

    • Inclusion in parish bulletins, newsletters, and social media platforms

    • Phone Banks at lowest performing locations; church staff/volunteers call parishioners to assist in responding

Coronavirus pandemic delays Census count of homeless and group housing residents

Coronavirus pandemic delays Census count of homeless and group housing residents
Millions of households have received an invitation in the mail to complete the survey, and nationwide more than 20 percent of residents have done so. But there are many groups of people who won’t be counted this way. Some do not receive mail, some have no fixed address, or live in group settings. The Census staff who will be going into the field to count those communities are also practicing social distancing, so these counts have been delayed. Pamela Michael, a media specialist with the Census Bureau, lays out how the timelines have changed to protect the health of both enumerators and people who will be counted in person.

Coronavirus stops LUPE's Census 2020 block walking program

Coronavirus stops LUPE's Census 2020 block walking program

SAN JUAN, Texas - La Unión del Pueblo Entero is stopping its block walking of colonias in support of Census 2020 due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Instead, the nonprofit that assists immigrant and low-income families will encourage residents to participate in the census count through phone calls. And with the Census Bureau announcing it has stopped its field operations, LUPE will ask its members and supporters to fill out the census forms online.

In an exclusive interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, LUPE community organizer Martha Sanchez admitted her group is worried that census participation in the Rio Grande Valley will be reduced due to the overriding attention on the coronavirus.

She notes that many Colonia residents do not have access to the Internet.

The more people that participate in the census, the more federal funding a community gets.
