In this episode of #TheNewAbnormal, I interview the writer, educator and consultant, Nilgin Yusuf.

With work that spans print, film curation, exhibition concepts and events, she believes that meaningful narratives are key.

In this episode, we discuss her career and her viewpoints across a wide range of social / cultural issues that have been impacted (or illuminated) by C19; such as inequality, wellbeing, compassion, mindfulness and indeed why Covid has been such a learning opportunity.

Finally, and along with her insights into digital storytelling (she was the Media Programme Director at LCF for many years), she also explains why Warbler is her favourite app...

Todd Lynn on fashion as an ideas laboratory and why everyone wants to be a rockstar

Todd Lynn on fashion as an ideas laboratory and why everyone wants to be a rockstar

In this new episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews Canadian ready-to-wear designer Todd Lynn (@toddlynnlondon).

Anne and Todd have known each other since 2000, whilst Anne was starting out at Christian Louboutin in London, and Todd was designing at Roland Mouret. They became close friends over the years and worked together closely, especially after Todd launched his eponymous brand in 2006.

Todd is considered rock and roll’s best-kept secret. His clients include U2, The Rolling Stones, Beyonce, The Savages, Lady Gaga, Courtney Love, Janet Jackson and P.J. Harvey. His collection embodies the effortless, dark and beautiful rock and roll cool that his music industry heavy hitters have long appreciated, a hybrid fusion of perfect tailoring and casual deconstruction.

The two discuss the joy and the challenges of having your own brand, the future of sustainability, and Todd’s thoughtful opinions around fashion as an ideas system. They touch on Todd's many incredible musical collaborations as he has dressed many a rock star and reflect upon both the glamour and hard work involved, especially when going on tour.

Todd also offers his mindfulness rituals, which more recently evolved to include baking cakes. Baking has allowed Todd to “connect to a process”, which is somewhat similar to his meticulous collection development process.

Todd then shares thoughts on teaching BA Students at Kingston University, the best advice he ever received from his teacher, the much-missed Louise Wilson, and finishes on the many books stacked up by his bedside. Enjoy!

Ep 15 'Slow Fashion, Small Business & Self Care' with Gwendolynne Burkin (fashion designer, bridal)

Ep 15 'Slow Fashion, Small Business & Self Care' with Gwendolynne Burkin (fashion designer, bridal)
Gwendolynne Burkin is part of an exciting generation of Australian fashion designer that came up a the late 90s independent fashion boom time alongside alum such as Akira Isagowa and Lisa Gorman.

But since then, a lot has changed in the Australian Fashion industry. Many of the names defined that period - how we dressed, what our high streets looked like, and the way Australian style was defined in the eyes of the world - have disappeared due to influences like highly competitive off-shore production, and inevitable defeat of online shopping by fast-fashion and overseas mega-brands.

For Gwendolynne to still be in business 21 years later is a small miracle, due mainly to a series of creative business reinventions. I wanted to talk to Gwendolynne about what it was like coming up in that era of promise - and how she has managed to continuously adapt and evolve within her industry in order to do what she loves.

This is a great episode for anyone who is looking to start their own business - especially one based around artisanal skill set.
When you ARE 'the machine’ at the centre of your business - how do you ensure that you are taking care of your biggest asset?

For some creatives, neglecting wellbeing for the sake of heightened productivity may mean you are getting results at the cost of your health.
You need to ensure you are supporting your passion - not just creatively but also physically, mentally, nutritionally and with rest. It’s up to you to take care of your greatest asset.
