Known by many names – sprig, pinny, bull – but unmistakable in appearance, the northern pintail is one of North America’s most recognizable, graceful, and well-studied duck species. Unfortunately, much of that attention was garnered because of dramatic population declines and the mystery surrounding it. Dr. Scott Stephens joins Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher to profile this iconic species, discussing its ecology, population status, causes of its decline, and conservation opportunities.

Host Dr. Mike Brasher is joined by Brian Hepworth, Director of Operations for the Prairie and Boreal, Ducks Unlimited Canada, as well Dr. Fritz Reid (retired), to discuss breeding habitat conditions in Prairie Canada, Boreal, California, and other duck-producing regions in the Pacific Flyway. Overall, both provide a positive report on the majority of habitats. Reid offers insight into California’s Central Valley habitats which produce a large number of mallards and other ducks for the Pacific Flyway.  Listen in to stay in tune with current habitat conditions this summer.

Tom Philpott, author of Perilous Bounty, was prescient in his 2020 book in a lengthy description of the 1862 floods that inundated Central Valley in a once in a century flood. Now Central Valley is facing an even more catastropic scenario as climate disruption adds fuel to an already volatile area now packed with dairy farms, oil wells, and massive swaths of land planted to almonds, pistachios, tomatoes, and cotton. What will ensue with the predicted flooding caused by potential rapid snowmelt is a desperate scenario indeed.
