Cradle and All Catch Up: Our Birth Story Episode Re-release

This week while we are on summer vacation,  catch up on all our podcast episodes. We have re-released one of our very first episodes... All about our birth stories.

This episode, we talk all about our different birth stories. With four kiddos between the two of us, we had VERY different labor and delivery experiences - from inductions and scheduled C-sections to VBAC and unplanned complications. Listen as we discuss ways to prepare for delivery but also how to prepare for the unexpected.

We love connecting with other mamas about their pregnancies, births, and parenting experiences. If you are interested in being on the podcast or providing topic ideas, message us at thecradleandall@gmail.com or DM us on IG @thecradleandall.

As always, please don't forget to subscribe and write a review.  Thank you for listening!

    Induction Without an Epidural

    Induction Without an Epidural

This week we're breaking down everything you need to know to prepare yourself physically and mentally for an induction without an epidural. I cannot stress the importance of going into labor with the mindset of possibly having an induction and preparing yourself for that outcome. I'll also discuss all things Pitocin: what it is, what it does, and how it can affect you, your baby, and labor. By getting your body and mind ready before you even go into labor, you can achieve an unmedicated birth despite being induced. 🤱🏼

Almost Didn't Make It - Kayla's Unmedicated Birth Story

Almost Didn't Make It - Kayla's Unmedicated Birth Story

Kayla and her husband, Grant, share about what mattered most when preparing for their first birth and how they are getting ready to meet this baby! Kayla openly shares about her struggle with and ultimate decision to become a mother. Her and Grant discuss the open communication that was so crucial for them prior to and during pregnancy. Kayla also discusses her concern with the changes having a child would make to her body, especially considering she is in the fitness industry. This is a must-listen because I know many, many women struggle with these same things and I love how she was able to work through each of these challenges.

Her birth story is incredible as well! She talks about how all of her prep left her unconvinced that she was even in labor come birthing time AND how she arrived at the hospital just in time to birth her baby, unmedicated, and exactly how she had planned for. I hope you absolutely enjoy listening to this week's birth story episode!

**PLUS, Kayla is an incredible Pilates instructor and she discusses how she uses movement and core work as part of her everyday birth prep and she has included a free download for everyone - available here!

    Covid-19 + Birth {Challenges & Benefits)

    Covid-19 + Birth {Challenges & Benefits)

If there is one thing I have learned as a life lesson that is also 100% applicable to all things birth, it's that every single challenge can be an incredible learning lesson and this holds true for what happened while women were pregnant and birthing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Challenges like pulling birth partners out of the birth rooms (unacceptable btw), moving healthy, low-risk moms to out of hospital births (the challenge is in the unexpected), mental health, women being pushed to their limits. They were all so daunting and so difficult.

    But...

Tune into this episode because the other side of those challenges are so beautiful. Birth partners figured out what they need to know and how to support these moms - because what if they could get in but the doula wasn't allowed?, women realized how strong they were and that their bodies were made for birth when they moved their care out of hospital, women found their voices and started asking questions about policy and legalities - they stood up for themselves and their babies, and hopefully we all learned a little compassion no matter where you were at - pregnant or provider.

Moms Need This: Occupational Therapy with Kayln Robertshaw

Moms Need This: Occupational Therapy with Kayln Robertshaw

If you haven't heard of "Occupational Therapy," join the club! I literally never heard of this until Kayln reached out to me and it's something I think every mom should be aware of. In case you have NO idea what OT's do - it's holistic care from professionals that are trained to help people get back to all of their normal things they do in life. It can be as "small" as getting in and out of bed, making sure you're showered for the day, getting back to exercises or rock climbing...literally whatever your normal and joyful day looks like - they help.

It is a completely individualized approach to healthcare which every single mom will benefit from. You can head to your OB or pediatrician and ask for this kind of care BUT take a listen to see what may or may not qualify. The BEST part? It's usually covered by insurance so it's an inexpensive way to get the support you need no matter where you are at in your pregnancy, birth, postpartum...or life. 💜

Kayln Robertshaw is an occupational therapy doctorate student at Rocky Mountain College in Billings Montana. She grew up in Frederick County Maryland, where her passion to enter the healthcare field first started. After graduating from James Madison University in Harrisonburg VA, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, with a concentration of Health Studies and a minor in special education. Kayln resides in Utah with her husband and son where she is finishing up her last year of graduate school with clinical rotations. Her current passions and interests are working with babies 0-3 years old through early intervention and working with adults who have acquired neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and strokes.

After finding out she was pregnant in March of 2021, she started listening to the My Essential Birth podcast. Thanks to the strategies, education and inspiration she gained from this podcast, she was empowered to successfully have an unmedicated birth. She now cherishes and obsesses over her 16 week old baby boy, Lincoln.

    Group B Strep: The Deets!

    Group B Strep: The Deets!

I have had so many questions recently about testing positive for Group B Strep or GBS and the number one concern is, "Will this ruin the birth that I want?" I'm here to break down what GBS is, how it affects pregnancy and labor, ways that you can decrease your chances of testing positive, what happens if you choose to use antibiotics, and also options other than antibiotics should you test positive.

If you're a mom that is wanting to stay at home as long as possible before heading to your birth place, but if you test positive you definitely want the antibiotics, I talk about all of your options AND I want to encourage you right now that being GBS+ does NOT ruin any kind of birth you are aiming for! If you're reading along and have no idea what I'm talking about, that's ok and I know you're not alone. 😂

When a mom tests positive for GBS she can choose to have or not have antibiotics during labor. Antibiotics are strongly encouraged by providers. Should you choose to have them, your provider will want you to arrive at your birth place at least 4 hours prior to giving birth to administer at least two doses of antibiotics for maximum effectiveness.

This is why moms that want to stay home until they're much farther in labor before heading to their birth place feel like they're going to lose some of their freedom and relaxation by going in early. Good news though - there's SO many options to choose from that make it possible to have the very best birth you were planning on. I give you all the details in this episode!

    Placenta Encapsulation with Bonnie Baker

    Placenta Encapsulation with Bonnie Baker

Placenta encapsulation was a foreign concept just a few years ago, but now as it becomes more mainstream there are tons of questions around who should have it done, what the benefits actually are, if there are risks involved and when to avoid encapsulation, how Covid-19 has affected placentas, and how to find someone who really knows what they're doing. Today I get to answer all of those questions with doula and almost midwife 😏, Bonnie Baker. For as long as I have known Bonnie in the birth world, she has been involved in finding ways to improve birthing outcomes and take care of mothers during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This includes the wonderful work of encapsulating placentas. Enjoy!

Glucose Test Alternatives with Jacquie Berg

Glucose Test Alternatives with Jacquie Berg

You come up to your glucose test between week 24-28 during pregnancy and often there's only one option given - "The Glucose Drink." This drink is filled with artificial coloring, flavors, dextrose, brominated soybean oil (banned in Europe, Japan, and India....and also patented as a flame retardant in the United States). So, yes there are a few reasons moms want to look for another option.

If you're one of those moms, you're not alone! In fact, my guest for this week's episode, Jacquie Berg is a mom and was so taken back by what was being offered to her for this test during her own pregnancy, that she took matters into her own hands to create a solution.

This week we're talking about everything that goes into the testing, why it's done, how glucose is measured, and healthy alternatives for moms everywhere! PLUS we have a really neat GIVEAWAY for not just one mama - but FIVE. 💜

Breastfeeding: The First 48 Hours with Sally Wright, IBCLC

One of the first things on our minds as soon as we have our babies is feeding them. Those first few days can feel like a blur and if you're choosing to breastfeed you may be feeling overwhelmed by ALL of the things you need to learn seemingly overnight. Today, I'm here with our special guest, Sally Wright, an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) and mother of five, to help clear up the confusion and pump out the facts you actually need to know!

Sally grew up in Hawai'i and now lives in Utah. She is the mother of five children, including a set of twins. She has been an IBCLC since 2016 and has served as a volunteer Leader with La Leche League since 2006, providing community breastfeeding support. The Magic of Postpartum Doulas with Sariah Wight

The Magic of Postpartum Doulas with Sariah Wight

As a mother of 3 and someone who has experienced postpartum depression and anxiety, I wish I had known about postpartum doulas sooner in my journey.

Postpartum care, especially in the US, is absolutely vital. Despite the popular narrative, postpartum care is not just about holding your baby and delivering frozen dinner. While those things are amazing and can be so helpful, postpartum doulas come equipped with extra knowledge, tools, and support measures to care for the whole you because you deserve to be taken care of too.

I'm so honored to be joined by Sariah Wight, a postpartum doula here in Utah, who is here to share all her postpartum magic in this week's episode.

Top 10 Red Flags From Your Provider

Top 10 Red Flags From Your Provider

Do you know how to tell if your provider is going to be a supportive part of your birth team? I see moms run into this issues a lot. You know how much I talk about the importance of a supportive provider BUT how do you know if you're provider is the right one?! One of the things I hope this episode does for you, is make some of your own assumptions about your provider's supportiveness, or lack thereof, clear and give you ideas about what questions you should ask to figure out if you're on the same page. I'm covering things like how you choose to birth (medicated or unmedicated - yes providers may have unsupportive opinions about this), cesarean birth rates, inductions, vaccines, birth plans, doulas and more.

Trigger warning! Some of the topics we cover in this episode are sensitive to some mamas. Everything here is meant to inform, give you excellent examples, and be a starting point to having those tough conversations with your provider. If you have questions about your personal pregnancy and birth experience and would like some more support, email me at "hello@myessentialbirth.com" or shoot me a dm on Instagram @myessentialbirth.
