RMC Briefing: How will the Media Bill affect religious broadcasting in the UK?

RMC Briefing: How will the Media Bill affect religious broadcasting in the UK?

The Media Bill going through parliament will change the landscape for public service broadcasters — the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, STV and S4C. They are being given powers for more flexible programming and the requirement to include specific genres of programmes on religion, science and arts will be removed. Questions have been raised as to whether this endangers the provision of religious broadcasting, where there has already been a dramatic decline over the past ten years.

In this briefing, our panel discuss the bill and the campaign to ensure hours of religious programming continue to be catalogued and reviewed. Ruth Peacock hosted, with panellists: Bishop Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, and lead bishop on the media in the House of Lords; Roger Bolton, journalist and broadcaster; Professor Kim Knott, author of 'Media Portrayals of Religion and the Secular Sacred'; Gareth Barr, Director of Policy and Regulation, ITV; Mark Friend, author of BBC Religion and Ethics Review 2017; David Strachan, trustee of Sandford St Martin Trust.

    Non-Binary Bad Boy

    Non-Binary Bad Boy
On this special episode, we have two surprise guests. Logan returns and for the the first time ever, Mike in Indiana joins us! Using their expertise, it is finally proven to Josh that the proposed V-frame house could be built. Josh explains the concept of the show Ink Masters to the group, leading to a discussion about reality tv shows and The Rehearsal. As a first time guest, Mike is challenged to a game of improv to get him prepared for his big wedding day. While asking Mike about his profession, he shares some fascinating information about Insane Clown Posse. After some classic basement banter, we revisit the Kids in Mind site to read some more movie reviews. Jared talks about Ezra Miller again and they make predictions on who will be the next celebrity to get in trouble. This was a lot of delightful banter and we hope you enjoy the shenanigans.

The Art of Floating (Surreal Satire) - Story #14

The Art of Floating (Surreal Satire) - Story #14

An old woman with her can of spray paint invokes the anger of the Argentinian government, a group of armed civilians, and an American newsroom run by some questionable characters. At the core of what becomes an international crisis lies an ancient cave painting: hundreds of human hands overlapping each other. A painting to which the old lady feels drawn, and which might just hold the key to the secret art of floating.

    CW: homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny

Stories from the Hearth is an experimental storytelling podcast, a free artistic space in the style of a painter's studio or collagist's scrapbook. It is a place for you to lose yourself in truly original short stories and their immersive soundscapes, written, narrated, and produced by Scottish poet Cal Bannerman.

Ep 42: Farms and Flatcaps With Dr Julian Norton (The Yorkshire Vet)

Ep 42: Farms and Flatcaps With Dr Julian Norton (The Yorkshire Vet)

Ey up! This week we welcome Julian Norton to Veterinary Ramblings - best known for his role on the popular Channel 5 television series 'The Yorkshire Vet'. The show is regarded as one of the most successful shows on the channel as it has reached the heart (and screens) of over 2 million viewers.

We discuss the intricacies of balancing the job of being a vet alongside being a TV personality, how the logistics of filming work around veterinary emergencies and what he's learnt as a result of working in TV. Aside from 'The Yorkshire Vet', Julian has also appeared on The Wright Stuff as a frequent guest as well as Springtime on the Farm and Big Week at the Zoo

Julian grew up in Castleford, West Yorkshire before studying his degree to become a Veterinary Surgeon at Cambridge University. He was inspired to become a vet by famous Yorkshire Veterinary Surgeon and Author James Herriot- he's even authored a few books himself! Julian's grandad was also a big influence on his choice in career, and we talk a little about their shared love for animals, the TV adaptation of "All Creatures Great and Small" and flat caps. Julian has almost 25 years under his belt as a mixed-practice veterinary surgeon living in North Yorkshire and was a partner in a practice that was once the surgery from which Alf Wight (James Herriot) worked - talk about full circle!

Series 2, Episode 10: Dawn Airey

Series 2, Episode 10: Dawn Airey

In the penultimate episode of series two, we're joined by Dawn Airey.

After graduating from Cambridge University, Dawn set out on what was to be a very colourful and successful career in media and television.

Admitting that she always felt like an outsider, Dawn wasn't one for shying away and quickly made her mark wherever she worked despite being in a heavily male dominated industry.

"When Andy offered me the role, he said - and I was only 27 - 'I want you to be Controller of Planning at Central', and I said, 'you've gotta be joking! I've no interest in that. A - I don't quite know what it is, and B - it's not Controller of News & Current Affairs'. He said, 'well, what's it gonna take? I'm gonna double your salary and what about a company car?' Now at the time - this is very important - this is how careers can turn on very daft things. I had a Peugeot 106 and it was breaking down every month and costing me £200 to fix. So for a Ford Fiesta XR2, I became Controller of Planning, and the irony of that was, when it was delivered to Birmingham and I took it and parked it in the NCP carpark, the day I took delivery of it was stolen the same day. It was true! Knicked the same day!"

Dawn's determination and hard work resulted in her successfully fulfilling roles such as Managing Director for Global (ITV), CEO of Channel 5 and running one of the world's largest visual media companies, Getty Images.

Heading up teams that commissioned programmes such as Supermarket Sweep, This Morning and Father Ted, Dawn tells us all about the ups and downs of being in such powerful positions.
