Jhumpa Lahiri on Translation as a Path to Self-Discovery

Jhumpa Lahiri on Translation as a Path to Self-Discovery

Author and translator Jhumpa Lahiri grew up in what she has called “a linguistic exile.” Born in London to Bengali immigrants who moved to the United States when she was 3, Lahiri experienced a profound sense of alienation as a child and a longing for somewhere that felt like home. Then, during a 1994 trip to Florence, Italy, she fell in love with the Italian language, which she came to see as a gateway to exploring her life and identity further—or to, in other words, get beyond any imposed self. For the last decade, she has written almost exclusively in Italian, and has translated most of her Italian writing into English herself. A visceral energy rises up from her translated sentences, reflective of the strong emotional tenor she feels when engaging with the Italian language.

Some warned Lahiri against her decision to embrace Italian, practically considering it career suicide. But she remained unmoved. Despite her many triumphs until that point—including winning the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for her debut short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies (1999), and having her popular novel The Namesake (2003) turned into a Hollywood film—the pivot brought about a new flood of creativity. Since 2015, Lahiri has produced more books than there have been years, including her most recent, Translating Myself and Others (Princeton University Press), which was published in May. Her first book of Italian short stories, Racconti Italiani, or Roman Stories, will debut in the fall.

On this episode, Lahiri speaks with Spencer about translation as a political act, the vocabulary of architecture, and language as a portal to understanding one’s place in the world.

Henry Kissinger, America's National Living Treasure ( A Special HAPPY 99th Birthday Edition)

On May 27, 1923, in Furth, Germany, a child was born who would grow up to be one of, if not the most important diplomats in the history of the planet.

Heinz Alfred Kissinger, who today turns 99 years old,  an immigrant who  would grow up to be an  American citizen, who would get America, his adopted land, out of one of the most protracted, divisive, wars in our history,  who would also open Communist China from diplomatic Isolation, who would broker peace in the Middle East that would lead to the successes of Jimmy Carter in the late 1970's,  who would also begin a process that would thaw the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and who after leaving office would provide guidance that would help direct American Foreign Policy for the next half century and counting.

It can be said without hesitation that Dr. Henry Kissinger has led a truly amazing an inspirational life.

If Richard Nixon should be considered one of the greatest leaders our country has ever produced their is no question that Dr. Henry Kissinger deserves an enormous amount of credit for skillfully carrying out the policy that made it all possible. Kissinger's impact on the world is incalculable.  We here at "Bridging the Political Gap" think its high time that someone recognizes both men for their roles in making a safer world and we are thankful that Henry Kissinger is still living to see us say thank you.

In this special edition of our show we celebrate the life, the impact, and the wisdom of Dr. Henry Kissinger, America's National Living Treasure and we wish Dr. Kissinger a happy birthday and many, many more moments in which we can share his wise, and thoughtful advice.

Episode 22 - Daniel Rodriguez - We Are Water

Episode 22 - Daniel Rodriguez - We Are Water

In episode 22, I sit down at the kitchen table of Daniel Rodriguez. He is a singer and songwriter who has spent the last few years recording and performing as a solo act. He has released one EP and one full-length album as Daniel Rodriguez. He was a founding member of the transcendental indie folk-rock group Elephant Revival and toured with the band for 14 years prior to the Elephant’s hiatus in 2018.  He recently released an album with his hip-hop folk side-project, 21st Ancient. We discuss bourbon, Daniel’s childhood, his introduction to Bonnie Paine and the other members of Elephant Revival, a harrowing bus fire, and Daniel’s upcoming projects and plans.  In the wrap-up, we discuss the incredible life-long success of Fugee’s album “The Score,” The Pharcyde’s, Spike Jonze directed, music video for “Drop,” 19th Century Whaling in New London, Connecticut, and enjoying every sandwich.  Walter makes a couple of guest appearances too.  Now please enjoy my honest conversation with Mr. Daniel Rodriguez.
