Episode 25 - Tongue Tie for both breast and bottle feeding families with Carmelle Gentle

During this episode, I speak with Carmelle Gentle, a midwife who is amongst many things, a feeding and lactation expert who specialises in babies with tongue-tie.

Carmelle, who truly does live up to her name - Gentle by name, Gentle by nature - gave up some of her very busy time to share with us exactly what you might need to look out for when spotting a tongue tie in both a breast and bottle-fed baby.

She can not only assess babies for tongue tie but is also qualified to divide them, and helps families as they move forward, to navigate the decisions and potential issues that this diagnosis brings.

    Normalizing Breastfeeding or Breastfeeding Problems?

    Normalizing Breastfeeding or Breastfeeding Problems?
This week, a new commercial by Frida Mom hit the airwaves during the Golden Globes. This ad is being applauded for normalizing breastfeeding. It certainly shows a real, raw glimpse of those early days as a nursing parent. We absolutely agree that it did a great job of pushing boundaries that needed to be pushed. But did it really show what the early days of nursing is like for most people? Was it so raw that it makes breastfeeding look scary and unappealing? Instead of portraying a realistic point of view, did it instead portray a point of view where new parents are undersupported? We definitely have concerns, questions, and take issue with more than a few things in the commercial. You can find more information, including a video of the commercial, on our blog: https://metromidwifery.com/?p=4065

    Community Birth and Cultural Norms

    Community Birth and Cultural Norms
Despite the increased popularity of community birth (which includes home and birth center births), it still represents a very small minority of births in the US. In this episode we discuss a number of ideas around normalizing countercultural practices that are common in our community such as home and birth center birth, breastfeeding/chestfeeding, or opting out of procedures and interventions such a circumcision. You can also find this episode on our blog: https://metromidwifery.com/?p=4036

Episode 27: Professional Support for Working Parents

Episode 27: Professional Support for Working Parents
Averjill Rookwood (The Corporate Doula) is a passionate doula who is trained to serve in the holistic fertility, birth and postpartum arenas. She also brings over fifteen years of employer benefits management experience to the table to assist her clients behind the scenes with the business of healthcare. Amy and Averjill talk about what both employees and employers need in terms of holistic support for working parents, and Averjill shares amazing insights, both for parents and companies who truly want to support one another through this time period. It's more important than ever as we are seeing such an exodus of women from the workforce due to COVID-19.

Episode 26: Running and Mothering? Yes You Can!

Episode 26: Running and Mothering? Yes You Can!
In today's episode, Amy sat down with Whitney Heins and Laura Norris of The Mother Runners. Join them in conversation about what it's like to be both a runner and mother, how that changes during pregnancy and postpartum, and why now, more than ever, is a great time to get your shoes on and get outside. They also spoke about how motherhood makes us better runners, and running makes us better mothers, and when we really embrace the fusion of the two we're able to thrive as athletes, casual runners, and parents. Enjoy!

Episode 24: Kate Torgersen Built Milk Stork By Fulfilling a Need

Episode 24: Kate Torgersen Built Milk Stork By Fulfilling a Need
This week on the pumpspot we were so excited to sit down with Kate Torgersen, the founder and CEO of Milk Stork and a mother of three. Kate founded Milk Stork when she was traveling and pumping for her twins, and was floored by the lack of resources, support, and understanding available for working, traveling, and pumping parents. Amy and Kate talk about what their journeys have been like as founders of breastfeeding companies, what the state of life is like for working parents right now, and how we can all do better to drive change.

Sarah is a pelvic floor physical therapist who has an incredible wealth of knowledge to share with us about pelvic floor health, normalizing a visit to a therapist like her, and her personal experiences as a breastfeeding, working mother of two. Sarah has been really open and honest on social media about her experience. Both of these women are members of Mothers Esquire and they are passionate about changing the world for mothers in the field of law. This episode feels especially relevant right now, and if you tune in to find out the name of Jamie's pump, you'll see why. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did, and as always, if you want to continue the conversation please join us over on the pumpspotting app.

Ep 21: Chestfeeding, Bodyfeeding, Breastfeeding and a New Identity

Ep 21: Chestfeeding, Bodyfeeding, Breastfeeding and a New Identity

We’re back after a two week vacation with some MAJOR NEWS!We decided to rebrand, and are now the Milk Minute Podcast. While breast friends was fun and punny, its also been done. It was picked in a bit of haste as we rode the wave of new project excitement😁. As time passed we realized it wasn’t as inclusive of all lactators as we wished to be, and that the phrase already had a pretty big internet presence. Its important to us that our content is accessible to everyone, including members of the LGBTQ+ community. Thats why the official rebranding episode debuts with an episode on Chestfeeding. This topic is near and dear to my heart, and I’ve been itching to record it for some time!! We will always have work to do to further this goal, and we are happy to do it. Want more information about lactating and birthing in the LGBTQ community?
