    Reclaiming “Chick-Lit”

    Reclaiming “Chick-Lit”

There is a persistent and damaging sexist trope that books written by women and for women are frivolous, light, and devoid of true meaning. On this episode of Velshi Banned Book Club Podcast we subvert that narrative with two powerful “chick-lit” books that have equally important messages: "Ready or Not" by Meg Cabot and “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson. “Ready or Not” focuses on high schoolers grappling with the magnitude of sex and consent. “Speak” poignantly explores the immediate aftermath and emotional repercussions of sexual assault.

Episode 19: One Ex After Another - The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Episode 19: One Ex After Another - The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

    🔮🦇🎃🦇 Happy Halloween!!!!🦇🎃🦇🔮

    Just kidding!

    Or are we?

You can take the girl out of Halloweentown but you can't the Halloweentown out of the girl.

The temperatures may be soaring, but so is the chemistry between the two main leads in this spicy rom-com novel that left us absolutely bewitched.

Vivienne Jones may be sweet, but she is certainly not to be messed with. Not only would you have her cursing your name (literally), you would also have her family to deal with... and maybe even a talking cat.

Her ex didn't heed our advice and in The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling we're left to watch the plot (among with🌶️ other things) simply unravel.

So please, remember to keep yourselves hydrated and never mix witchcraft with Vodka.

This podcast includes topics may not be suitable for everyone. This novel has a number of triggers that we may be discussing or briefly touching upon. The full list of trigger warnings is available on TheStoryGraph.

    "Beach Read" by Emily Henry

BYOB, the Bring Your Own Book Podcast, is back for Season 3 featuring your favourite bookworms Nikki and Kelly. Every episode we'll discuss the book we read and share our unfiltered thoughts and opinions.

    ---
A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.
    ---

This episode, the BYOB ladies are joined by Tilly to discuss #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry's Beach Read, which happens to be Nikki and Kelly's favourite Emily Henry book. Don't be fooled by the title! While this hilarious, heartwarming, and sometimes melancholy book does in fact take place by a beach, we feel that the book is best enjoyed snuggled up with a cozy blanket and a warm, comforting drink. Bridget Jones's Diary

    Bridget Jones's Diary

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that when one part of your life starts going okay, another falls spectacularly to pieces." That's right! We're watching Bridget Jones's Diary, starring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. Loosely based on Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, Bridget Jones's Diary follows a young woman's narration of her life over the course of a year. We watched this one on Amazon Prime, but it's also apparently available on Showtime.

    14. My Guilty Pleasure: Wattpad (Marina)

Marina LOVED reading Wattpad - a website written by teenage girls for teenage girls. But she couldn’t tell anyone. “How was I supposed to tell my dad that I like reading about… werewolves?” It was just too embarrassing. Today, Marina opens up and sets the record straight about the dirty word, ‘guilty pleasure.’ She also talks to her younger sisters. Plus, a dramatic reading of a scene from “Babysitting the Bad Boy.” (Are you intrigued? Oh yeah.)
