Andrew Dickens: This weekend showed the Greens are fast becoming unelectable

Andrew Dickens: This weekend showed the Greens are fast becoming unelectable

So two big video interviews over the weekend.

Firstly, Tucker Carlson interviewed Vladimir Putin.

Tucker said it was because no-one but him had bothered to ask which is BS. There's always people in the media claiming they're the only people holding power to account.

My feel is that Putin knew Tucker was desperate for the scoop following his embarrassing downfall at Fox, so obliged him as a useful idiot.

But that's not to denigrate the appearance. It was great to watch and listen to Putin. Know your enemy, they say, but you can't if no-one lets you hear them.

The interview was reported 2 ways. Either Putin keen for World War 3 or Putin keen to negotiate for peace.

He alluded to both things but what I took as more chilling was his half hour history lesson on the Russian/Ukraine situation. It went back centuries.

It showed his depth of feeling. Māori would understand, having such long held historical grievance. It's a depth that means he's not pulling out or pulling back. In fact, his keenness for peace negotiation only requires USA to stop funding Ukraine. He's playing a long game. This conflict will only stop when Putin has gone which is no time soon.

So the other interview was Jack Tame's conversation with Chloe Swarbrick.

    It was a shocker.

Her refusal to understand how her Palestinian chants had been received was remarkable. This after mediation by the Human Rights Commission. This after Jewish members of her electorate had spoken with her.

The left are famous opponents of hate speech, but to understand if speech is offensive you need to have the empathy to understand how the offence has been taken.

Chloe seemed unable to comprehend the fear Jewish people have of that chant. She was unable to own any blame.

The rest of the interview made me feel that the fresh and intelligent woman who entered parliament has been replaced by a hard line radical informed only by her own echo chamber.

The Greens are in deep trouble. The Ghahraman resignation and forthcoming trial. James Shaw, the one calming influence, the man billed as a relationship builder, gone. The prospect of Davidson and Swarbrick ruling a radical socialist party.

The damage is already evident in the polls this weekend with the Greens dropping 4.8 per cent to sit at 9 per cent.

They're fast becoming unelectable. A socialist party that pays lip service to the environment and has forgotten about why they came into being in the first place.

Heather Du Plessis-Allan: Don't Underestimate Chloe Swarbrick

Heather Du Plessis-Allan: Don't Underestimate Chloe Swarbrick

I’ve been surprised by the number of people who still underestimate her

I've had texts and in person conversations with people who don’t think she's got what it takes

    Yes she does

Her winning Auckland central back in 2020 was a big deal. Even Jacinda Ardern, the darling of the left internationally, couldn't do it. She Tried twice and eventually pulled the pin.

Not only Chloe win it, But she held the seat which is the something the greens have never managed to do before

And she did it in the face of the red covid wave of 2020... and then the blue backlash wave of last year

She regularly appeared in preferred prime minister polls, Which basically never happens for an MP in a minor party who isn’t the leader of that party

A couple years back David Farrar the guy behind the curia polls pointed out how popular Chloe is. He said a poll he’d done "showed Swarbrick had three times the favourability of James Shaw with all voters – she was at 23 per cent and Shaw at 8 per cent".

And that says a lot given James Shaw was commonly referred to as the acceptable Green

Well... she’s a lot more acceptable

So Chloe's got the chops, She can do the job and she’s made no secret today of the fact that she wants the greens to be bigger than Labour

    It's not crazy

The greens in Germany have at times polled much higher than their Labour party equivalents.

    Can she do it here?

I refer you back to David Farra who said this week “Chloe could well lift support for the Greens at the expense of Labour.”

So strap yourself in because if Chloe gets the co leadership, and there is no reason why she shouldn't

We are going to watch a fierce battle on the left of politics for top dog status

    Labour vs green

    Chippy vs Chloe

And come on... if you’re a centre left voter... which of those two has more charisma?

Which of those two parties look more energised?

    Don't underestimate Chloe Swarbrick

Nicki Jackson: Alcohol Healthwatch Executive Director on delivering alcohol reduction bill

Nicki Jackson: Alcohol Healthwatch Executive Director on delivering alcohol reduction bill

A petition with more than 8000 signatures  is calling on MP's everywhere to support Chloe Swarbrick's new anti-alcohol bill.

The bill will ban alcohol sponsorship in sports and ban appeals of liquor licensing decisions.

Alcohol Healthwatch's Executive Director, Nicki Jackson, joins us here to talk about the bill and highlight that it raises good points, but doesn't look likely to pass.

"I can't make comment about what politicians think about a bill, it's important that we go into any debate with the evidence at hand and the evidence is really strong around the harm from alcohol sponsorships in sport."

David Cormack analyses James Shaw's co-leadership challenge

David Cormack analyses James Shaw's co-leadership challenge

James Shaw has confirmed he will contest the Green Party's co-leadership after being ousted from the role.

"I am in it to win it," Shaw told reporters saying he had spoken to party members and family and had decided to stand again as Green Party co-leader.

Shaw made the announcement after failing to get the 75 per cent votes of delegates at the party's online annual meeting at the weekend to be reconfirmed in the role. Co-leader Marama Davidson was reconfirmed by delegates.

This opens up the co-leadership role this week to challengers.

Former communications and policy director to the Green Party David Cormack joins Nick Mills to analyse the situation.
