Beyond the court: Former NBA player Chris Herren's battle with substance use disorder

Beyond the court: Former NBA player Chris Herren's battle with substance use disorder

Like countless young boys, Chris Herren had an ambitious dream of becoming a professional basketball player. Chris turned his dream into reality, first playing for the Denver Nuggets and then achieving his ultimate goal of joining his hometown team, the Boston Celtics. But the life of a successful athlete isn't all glory. It comes with its challenges—long weekends, time away from home, stress, and pressure. Behind the scenes, Chris was also keeping a secret—a battle with substance use disorder that was wreaking havoc on his mind and body.

In this episode of Grieving Out Loud, Chris opens up about the hurdles he faced, the obstacles he overcame, and how addiction affected every aspect of his life in unimaginable ways. But here's the incredible part—Chris has a powerful message to share with others who might be going through similar struggles. His story is about resilience, hope, and the fight against substance use disorder.

Chris now travels across the country, bringing his story to students, adults, and professional athletes. He's even created a wellness program, authored a book, and his story has been featured in a film to prevent others from going down the dark road of substance abuse.

Former NBA Player Chris Herren on Simone Biles, supporting our youth and the strength in struggle

Former NBA Player Chris Herren on Simone Biles, supporting our youth and the strength in struggle

To any outsider in his Massachusetts high school, star basketball player Chris Herren looked on top of the world, with broken records behind him and a promising career ahead of him. But what many did not know was that beneath his physical prowess was someone struggling with mental health challenges and substance use.

In his return to Heart of the Matter, Chris connects with Elizabeth Vargas about parenting and the importance of focusing on our children’s social and emotional health as students across the nation return to school in the midst of a resurgence of COVID-19. The two also speak about the ripple effect of speaking up and why, as a former pro-athlete in recovery, Chris is inspired by Olympic gymnast Simone Biles’s stand against mental health stigma.

Chris Ott: Ott In My House (Former Cal Poly & Mercer Player)

We don't expect you to recognize the name, but sometimes the unexpected turns out to be the most interesting. Chris Ott joins us today to share his experiences that involve multiple former guests of ours. He gives us a great idea of what the average role player in college basketball will go through and also the struggles of a first year Division 1 program.

Ott played competitive High School and AAU hoops both with and against some big time legendary names out of the Los Angeles area. He went on to play at Cal Poly where he was a member of the team for their very first year at the Division 1 level. That year Cal Poly had the losingest record for a first year Division 1 program (1-26). He then transferred and finished his career at Mercer. He shares some great stories about Andre Miller, Chris Herren, Rico Harris, Paul Shirley, Elton Brand, Felipe Lopez, Carlos Arroyo, legendary coach Bob Burton, playing against Duke and MUCH more.

This episode was an absolute joy. We know you're all used to our former professional players but we know you will love these stories and really appreciate his basketball experiences and the incredible players that he was able to play against. We felt this episode was important and very relatable to what the average college basketball player experiences during their hoop journey and we believe this will give you a greater appreciate for collegiate role players and first year Division 1 programs.  Turns our Chris is also a fan of our podcast so BIG thanks to Chris for his time and for also being a supporter of our show.

    Thank you Chris Ott!
