1 Corinthians 12-14 | Speaking in Tongues, Spiritual Gifts, and Gender in the Church

1 Corinthians 12-14 | Speaking in Tongues, Spiritual Gifts, and Gender in the Church

Are you ready to unlock the mysteries surrounding the practice of speaking in tongues and the use of spiritual gifts? We've brewed plenty of enlightening discussions in this episode where we navigate through the scriptural voyage of 1 Corinthians 12-14. We dive deep into questions surrounding the reality and continuance of speaking in tongues, the significance of utilizing our individual spiritual gifts, and the paramount importance of love and unity among the community of believers.

We didn't shy away from controversial topics either. In the second half, we discuss the roles of men and women within the church, guided by interpretations drawn directly from God's word. We've shed light on the beautiful diversity within the body of Christ and offered forthright views on women's roles and the use of spiritual gifts in the church. The episode wraps up with a powerful reminder that love, indeed the greatest gift, should be pursued above all else. Join us, as we decipher our contemporary understanding in light of God's timeless revelations.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul discusses spiritual gifts, emphasizing their diversity within the body of Christ. He compares the church to a human body, illustrating interconnectedness and necessity among its members. Various gifts like wisdom, healing, prophecy, and speaking in tongues are listed for the church's common good. Paul stresses the importance of love as the guiding principle for using these gifts without elevating one over another.

1 Corinthians 13 is known as the "love chapter," Paul eloquently describes love's supreme value over spiritual gifts. He articulates its patient, kind, selfless, and enduring nature, contrasting it with temporary gifts. Paul emphasizes the lasting significance of love, declaring it the greatest virtue that should underpin Christian relationships.

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul continues discussing spiritual gifts, focusing on speaking in tongues and prophecy. He encourages prioritizing prophecy over tongues for the church's benefit unless there is interpretation. Paul emphasizes the importance of clear communication, providing guidelines for orderly worship and stressing the significance of intelligible communication for mutual edification during gatherings.

Troy Marshall Kennedy - Hero Worship Trailer

Troy Marshall Kennedy - Hero Worship Trailer

Season one of Troy Marshall Kennedy's new podcast series is a 12 episode look at Hero Worship. Jesus is our ultimate hero, and we live our lives in imitation of him as we do many of our other heroes. Ultimately, we become like the thing we worship. To know him is to love him. To love him is to trust him. To trust him is to obey him joyfully. To joyfully obey him is to love the way he loves. In hero worship, we observe practices that imitate various rhythms we see in Jesus’ earthly ministry. When we imitate him in these practices, we are saying, "Here I am. I want to be close to you. I want to be like you. And I am prioritizing our relationship out of love and admiration.

Troy Kennedy has been a worship and discipleship pastor for the last thirty-four years in number of different churches and denominations. With a degree in music from Azusa Pacific University, Troy has served in churches anywhere from 100 to 16,000 in attendance, most notably Saddleback Church pastored by Rick Warren.

For the last 17 years, Troy has served as a worship and teaching pastor at Westside Family Church in the Kansas City area where he has served in both worship and discipleship, developing and teaching content to equip Christ followers on their spiritual journey with Jesus.

Troy has also been an adjunct professor at Mid-America Nazarene University training teams of young adults for healthy, excellent worship arts ministry.

As an ordained pastor and elder at Westside, Troy has a burden to see people grow in-depth and intimacy in their relationship with Christ. The soon to be released book, Hero Worship: A 12 Week Journey to Become More Like Jesus, is designed to help people walk in imitation of Jesus and find fullness of life as they grow in love for God and others.

God has blessed Troy with a beautiful wife Gwen, and two amazing sons, Grant and Trent.

    Psalms 43-45, 49, 84-85, 87 | What Should I Do With My Life?

    Psalms 43-45, 49, 84-85, 87 | What Should I Do With My Life?

Psalm 49  asserts that when we die, we cannot take our wealth or possessions with us. It reminds us that we will all face judgement before God, and that the ultimate measure of our worth will be based on the state of our souls.

The Psalmist warns against those who trust in their wealth and boast about their riches, as they will ultimately perish like the animals. Instead, the Psalm encourages us to trust in God and live a righteous life, as this is what truly matters in the end.

Psalm 49 emphasizes the idea that our worldly accomplishments and material possessions are ultimately meaningless in the face of death and judgement. It serves as a call to focus on the things that truly matter, such as our relationship with God and our character. In this way, the Psalm teaches us the importance of living a life that is pleasing to God, as this is the only way to ensure that we will be found worthy at the final judgement.

Memento mori is a Latin phrase that translates to "remember that you will die." The concept serves as a reminder that death is inevitable and that we should live our lives with this reality in mind. It is a theme that has been explored in various forms of art and literature throughout history.

Psalm 49 is a biblical passage that deals with the theme of memento mori. It speaks of the foolishness of those who trust in their wealth and material possessions, as these things cannot save them from death. The Psalm reminds us that both the rich and the poor will die, and that our true wealth lies not in material possessions but in the state of our souls.

Overall, the concept of memento mori serves as a reminder to live a meaningful and purposeful life, recognizing the fleeting nature of our time on earth. Psalm 49 reinforces this message by reminding us that our focus should be on eternal values rather than temporary pleasures or material possessions.
