    C&SI - A Christmas Miscellany (Part 2) - 31 Dec 2023 (S04E06b) (podcast excerpt)

    So Merry Christmas folks!

We are still in the Christmas Octave so it is still Christmastide on the liturgical calendar even if some grinches have already taken down their Christmas decorations!

In Ireland, the tradition is that no Christmas decorations come down until after Nollaig na mBan (Women's Christmas = Little Christmas = Feast of Epiphany on Jan 6th, and we still keep in on Jan 6th and don't move it around like some other countries do on their liturgical calendars!). So in this weeks podcast excerpt  we share our Christmas reflections and Noirin Lynch shares some thoughts with us on Epiphany.

In addition to it still being within the Octave of Christmas, as it is the Sunday within the Octave it the Feast of the Holy Family and as it is 31 December it is also the vigil for the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, which is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace with the annual papal message. So again in this weeks podcast excerpt, Fr Luke McNamara gives us a reflection on the Crib and we are sharing on this Sunday to link to the feast of the Holy Family.

So on behalf of all the C&SI team, we continue to wish you a blessed Christmas and peaceful New Year 2024.

"In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child;and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.T he shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them."

Journey to Bethlehem | Nikki Anders

Journey to Bethlehem | Nikki Anders

When I got the email about a new Christmas musical coming to theaters with big names like Antonio Banderas, I knew I had to do some investigation. While it was a little strange for this midwesterner to watch a Christmas movie when it was 90 degrees outside, I was so delighted to have the opportunity to preview this phenomenal work.

I truly got chills and tears as I pushed the volume on my computer screen to the max and immersed myself in the story. The Journey to Bethlehem score and production is truly a work of art and a film I plan on having on rotation every holiday season from here on out! I was thrilled when I got matched to interview the co-writer of this Christian film, Nikki Anders!

I pray this episode is a blessing to you, friends!

The Redemption of Mrs. Scrooge (A Tale to Inspire Generosity This Christmas Season)

The Redemption of Mrs. Scrooge (A Tale to Inspire Generosity This Christmas Season)

Today I am reading my version of Charles Dickens's 1843 novella "A Christmas Carol", but I'm tweaking the characters, the plot and the lessons within!

If you tuned into my "To Grandmother's House, We Go!" episode last week about triggers during the holidays, you'll recognize these characters.

As you head out on the road to visit family and friends this Christmas, plug in your phone to your car speakers and listen and learn together as a family!

The Both And of Wholehearted Celebration- Navigating Grief and Loss During the Holidays

The Both And of Wholehearted Celebration- Navigating Grief and Loss During the Holidays

I have a question: How do you feel about the holiday season? Do you feel some dread? Overwhelm or anxiousness?

Maybe you feel anxious over the pressure to be happy and joyous as the Christmastide and well-wishes begin. Now, I also am curious to know how you feel about celebration.

Do you wait to practice celebration as a reward or a reaction to good news?

Do you start to cringe when you hear the platitude, “have an attitude of gratitude?”

So let’s dive into something called Dichotomy, which I shared more about during the Simply Wholehearted Summit this fall and received lots of wonderful feedback saying it was so helpful to viewers.

Remember, emotions are guideposts that can teach us about ourselves and are a gift from the Lord to help us heal. Jesus himself, we see in scripture, experienced a wide range of emotions, and he never sinned! So those big emotions you feel right now heading into the holidays? There is nothing wrong with you for feeling that way.

    It’s normal.
    It’s okay.
