For this main episode, Angus and Will cover the two most successful and acclaimed films of the year and the circumstances behind their strange pairing— Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer,' also with a star studded cast. How did the two come together to form the internet and cultural phenomenal now known as "Barbenheimer"? Has their pairing caused a jump in ticket sales for both? The boys answer these questions and more.

Concluding NOLAN WEEK, it seemed best to follow up his latest big release with a review of what might be Christopher Nolan's most underappreciated directorial effort.  This was his follow-up to the ground-breaking Memento which was released just the year before and this time around, he was working with a major studio with a decent budget, along with several top-flight actors.  This is basically a crime procedural taking place in Alaska during a time of year when the sun never sets.  

Al Pacino stars as an LA cop who is sent out this way to investigate the murder of a teenage and he finds that because there is constant sunlight, he can't really sleep....hence the title. ;) Recent two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank co-stars as a local police detective who partners with him on the case and.....the late, great Robin Williams co-stars as a mysterious local writer who apparently had a questionable relationship with the recent murder victim.  And what results is a tense cat-and-mouse between cop and suspect.....

"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." 

Those were the immortal words (quoting Hindu scripture) spoken by the late nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer on live television twenty years after he helped create the atomic bomb.  They have resonated for decades since and they are part of the focus of this large-scale biopic directed by Christopher Nolan.  Nolan directs an all-star cast lead by Cillian Murphy who plays the titular figure along with Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh, along with several others of note.  The cast is expansive, the scope is expansive, and let's see if Nolan's adaptation of this tragic real-life story (based upon his biographical novel, "American Prometheus") does justice to its subject matter's importance.

Five years ago, acclaimed director Christopher Nolan gave us his first film to be based true events after a career mostly devoted to mind-bending fantasy or science fiction.  And the subject matter is undeniably cinematic: the May 1940 evacuation of more than 400,000 Allied troops from the French coastal town of Dunkirk – this was a key turning point of World War II as these troops were generally trapped around a coastal bottleneck surrounded by Nazi/Axis forces closing in from various directions.  This film was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture and ended up winning three – it stars Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles, Tom Hardy, and Kenneth Branagh among many others.

Directorial Debuts is this weeks theme. We start with our top 5 directorial debuts. Terrance Malick's "Badlands" (1973) is based on a real life killing spree in 1958 and it gives us a glimpse of Malik's poetic style in both photography and language. M&A agree Sissy Spacek steals the show (19:57). "Following" (1998) is a neo-noir crime drama that Christopher Nolan made for around $6,000. The film definitely has Nolan's signature themes of time and identity and does not disappoint (51:18).

Next, Relationships Are....Complicated with Sex, Lies and Videotapes (1989) and Closer (2004).
