Episode 593: The Barbenheimer Dead Reckoning Asteroid Hustler... of destiny

Episode 593: The Barbenheimer Dead Reckoning Asteroid Hustler... of destiny

Super long episode title befits a super long episode, and Mikey, d$, and #TwitterlessDrEarl have an awful lot to go over... it's July 2023 ReFlicktions and the meat of the summer blockbusters fall into this episode.

First up, Dave kicks it off with the first of two Katie Heigl movies as he begins to finish a quest that no one should really ever want to do.  #TwitterlessDrEarl does hit the Pretentious Corner once or twice, as Mikey dives into the Cannon Films schlock of bad Chuck Norris and the classic film of good Jack Lemmon.

Both old movies and new are celebrated, and of course, the biggest of the summer - Asteroid City, Indy 5, Oppenheimer, Barbie, and MI Dead Recks P-1 all are covered here, as well as the guys' new Top 5.

And the guys even touch on some of the controversy of the Barbie film and it's themes and possible agenda...

And here are the films discussed this week, and where to watch them.

    1986 - Firewalker

    1986 - Firewalker
It's Louis Gossett Jr.'s 86th birthday, so our limited series, 1986, is back with a special Friday bonus episode to discuss his co-starring role in Firewalker! Was Chuck Norris successful as the comedic relief in a PG-rated film? Is Firewalker the high adventure, treasure hunting thrill ride you remember from your youth, or "Ed Wood's Indiana Jones?"
David and Scott are back to answer these questions and many others, while Jeff defends his love of another classic B-movie from his childhood.

    90s Memes

    90s Memes

Remember Pulp Fiction? Or Legends of the Hidden Temple? How about that iconic scene from Jurassic Park? Whether or not you have 90s nostalgia, the internet is full of great memes that call back the pre-internet era –– to a simpler time when everyone tuned in to the same TV shows and "going to the movies" actually meant going somewhere.

    Episode 0033

    Episode 0033
Episode 33 begins with the Mars Perseverance Rover and it's landing on the Red Planet. We discuss the ethical aspect of whether humans should travel to, build upon or even colonise other planets.

Things quickly turn into typical A&TD conversations, leading in with which fast food franchise would be best served (pun intended) once settlement was established, with multiple chains and companies accounted for. From there it goes to hugging trees, tips when travelling in New York City, Chuck Norris on Mars, Tennis on the tallest building in the world, the weird ass creatures living in the darkest depths of our oceans, the results of our latest instagram poll, sleeping patterns and overall cleanliness.

    222 - General Butt Naked

    222 - General Butt Naked

General Butt Naked aka Joshua Blahyi is a complicated figure. He is now a Liberian Christian missionary helping victims or Liberia's first civil war rebuild their lives. In the early 90s, he was one of Liberia's most brutal warlords. While literally naked, and often while wielding a machete, he led an army of coked-up, brainwashed child soldiers into committing almost unimaginable atrocities. He committed child sacrifices and regularly engaged in cannibalism. And there were others nearly as brutal as he was. Liberia in the 90s was basically hell on earth. It was a nation of sexual abuse and murder and corruption and chaos. How did things get so bad? Today we learn how Liberia was formed and how decades of oppression led to two incredible bloody civil wars.

    Ep. 08 - Chuck Norris

    Ep. 08 - Chuck Norris

On this episode of Blue Line Banter I am joined by Chuck Norris, owner of the Fayetteville Marksmen, a veteran-owned and operated professional hockey team competing in the most elite independent hockey league in the United States, the Southern Professional Hockey League.  Our discussion covered Chuck’s background and early days attending Detroit Red Wings games with his father, lessons learned as a member of the 3rd Special Forces Group and Paratrooper in the United States Army, the importance of doing things the right way, and his purchase of the Fayetteville Marksmen in April of 2017.  Chuck Norris is the kind of guy you want leading you into battle and certainly someone I would never bet against.  He had me ready to run through a couple brick walls after our discussion and I hope you find the conversation as inspiring as I did.  Thanks for tuning in.

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 530

This episode we talk with Austin Trunick, author of “The Cannon Film Guide”, an in-depth series of books about the legendary 1980s B-movie studio, The Cannon Group

And as we discuss the art and influence of Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, we also address… The Apple, renting horror movies, Death Wish 2, Frank Langella, Exterminator 2, Sho Kosugi, Vestron Video, there’s so much craziness going on there, Chuck Norris, a post-apocalyptic universe, 10 to Midnight, the yellow Power Ranger, Michael Dudikoff, Masters of the Universe, William Sachs, Enter the Ninja, has one of the higher body counts, Charles Bronson, Avenging Force, a healthy supply of guys who could do flips, Flashdance, they’re dressed… basically as The Village People, unrelated ninja, Skeletor, re-dubbing European porno movies, the hero shoots the villain point-blank… with a bazooka, Dolph Lundgren, he had already moved on to another project, Franco Nero, Breakin', violent action movies, that was based on a stage-musical written in Israel… in Hebrew, there are so many ninja movies, Empire International Pictures, Invasion U.S.A., Mario Van Peebles, with a dubbed Texas accent, you travel five-thousand miles… around that corner, Ninja III: The Domination, the threads of society are falling apart as the years go on, River Of Death, Revenge of the Ninja, and during the screening… the audience actually boo’ed, Death Wish 3, Robert Ginty, high confidence in the product he was producing, Christopher Walken, wearing a crazy leather-studded outfit and at least make it releasable.

“...yeah, they were very, very good at selling - their movies.”

199 - Bruce Lee: Life and Death of the Dragon

199 - Bruce Lee: Life and Death of the Dragon

Today we dig into the life of a true citizen of the world, Lee Jun-fan; known professionally as Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was a martial arts pioneer, known to some as the "father of MMA" and as the founder of Jeet Kune Do. He as also a Hong Kong and American actor who made some of the most profitable films of all time.

One of the biggest pop culture icons of the 20th century, Bruce is often credited with helping change the way Asians were presented in American films. He had to bust his ass to make a name for himself in the US film market, and then right as his star began to rise to unprecedented heights for a Chinese man in America, he died unexpectantly at the age of 32. And then, years later, his only son Brandon followed in his father's footsteps, becoming an action star and then also suddenly and tragically dying just as his own star began to rise, at the even younger age of 28.

Two remarkable lives lost in their primes. Sad endings, for sure, but the lives they lead, especially Bruce's, were incredibly inspirational. So dive in and be inspired in this kung fu, kick-ass edition, of Timesuck.

We've donated $6,100 this month to the Innocence Project. The innocence project exonerates the wrongly convicted through DNA testing and reforms the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice. To find out more, visit https://www.innocenceproject.org/
