    It's A Magical Life

    It's A Magical Life
DeShawn Roberts is a second degree Wing Chun Black Belt who loves teaching martial arts to people of all ages. You may know Wing Chun as Magic Hands as seen in the Karate Kid.

He's a Louisville, Kentucky native whose grandmother owned a restaurant. He enjoyed some amazing down home, southern Thanksgiving meals with family. His recollection made my mouth water.

Our conversation went all over the place. We talk about cooking, attempted sexual assaults, levels of implicit bias and all the usual topics related to being a Black man in the United States. His first interaction with law enforcement happened while playing an innocent game of tag with friends. It's a rich conversation you don't want to miss.

DeShawn's favorite words is the quote "Joy is not an emotion. It's a decision. I choose to have joy."

DeShawn's favorite song is Mariah's Carey Can't Take That Away.

Every interview starts with getting-to-know-you questions about favorites, accomplishments and then goes deeper. You won't find a collection of conversations with Black men like this anywhere else. Hear their wisdom.

Episode 388 - Sifu Clark Tang

Episode 388 - Sifu Clark Tang

Sifu Clark Tang is a martial arts instructor and practitioner. He is the founder of the Wing Chun Temple in California.

Being a warrior, being a martial artist, it's okay to be unhappy. It's okay not to go in your way. But let me tell you, you live a life that's not only for you, you live for something bigger.

Sifu Clark Tang - Episode 388

As a child, what are the odds that you'll be inside a kung fu theater that's showing a Shaw Brothers' film when you are not even supposed to be there? We can call it destiny but it definitely brought the best out of him. Sifu Tang has successfully related his faith with his martial arts through his spirituality. Sifu Clark Tang is the founder at the Wing Chun Temple and he is in the lineage of Ip Man. Get ready because Sifu Clark Tang gave us a very spiritual and emotional episode about his life and journey to the martial arts. Listen to find out more!

Bartenders Without Experience the New Experience at 55 South

Bartenders Without Experience the New Experience at 55 South

In this On Foodable Side Dish, brought to you by the Foodable WebTV Network, Foodable Correspondent Yareli Quintana hits the heart of Downtown San Jose to sip on the the creative concoctions of cocktail bar and lounge 55 South. Its inviting, warm, intimate atmosphere is complete with handmade leather couches and urban-chic, floor-to-ceiling windows. Aside from the shelves usually jam-packed with more than 300 bottles of spirits, there is another interesting tidbit added to the recipe of 55 South’s success — the bartenders never usually had experience prior to their time behind the bar. Co-owners Paul Chun and Eric Nielsen, bartenders themselves, believe that it’s harder to train people out of bad habits and that it’s easier to train those with the hunger to learn. Feel iffy about ordering a drink from 55 South? Don’t.

Watch the full episode to see how this team whips up genius cocktails using old, fundamental concepts and fun, flavorful twists.
