Today my guest is author and inspirational speaker Jonas Royster. He overcame a troubled past, including a few incarcerations, gang banging and a severe alcohol addiction. He is releasing his second book, with 4 more in the pipeline. He is also doing motivational speaking, trying to use his story, struggles and success to point out a road map to what is possible for those in his similar situation. Scooch over Cinco De Mayo, St. Patrick’s Day, Octoberfest – there is another reason to celebrate! Juneteenth is here and an official federally acknowledged Holiday! Learn why this is an important date in American History and, as importantly – celebrate! There are never too many reasons to celebrate. There are Juneteenth celebrations springing up all over the country – find one near you, check it out and join in the revelry. Today we talk a little about the local La Mesa celebration, but there is sure to be one near you! 

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!  This week, we’re talking about one of our favorite nuns, the genius author, poet, and scholar Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz.  Born in the mid-1600s, Sor Juana’s work has had a resurgence in the past few decades, and we want to get a little piece of the action for ourselves.  (Yes, we know Cinco de Mayo isn’t actually a big deal in Mexico.)  Rachel shakes people’s hands just to MESS with them.  Jackie reveals one of the rules of being white.  Theo recommends time travel.  Topics include: Kermit face, head nods between men, Joshua’s professional look and feel, sexual home runs, Play-Doh men, Oliphaunts, Octavio Paz, the SAT (Spaniard Aptitude Test), absorbing one’s twin in utero, and the genderqueer police.

For most Americans, Cinco De Mayo is merely one round in the Holy Trinity of Drinking Holidays - along with St. Patrick's Day and New Year's Eve. But is there more to the story? Nikki Boyer serves up giant, salt-rimmed glasses of history with Dr. David Hayes-Bautista (director of UCLA's Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture) and celebrated artist Lalo Alcaraz (creator of the comic strip "La Cucaracha"). They discuss the true, inspiring, David-and-Goliath story behind this festive annual North American celebration.
