    Episode Twenty-Three: Laugh Out Loud

    Airplane (1980) & Groundhog Day (1993)

Our films this week are here to make you laugh out loud. One turns the phrase “the friendly skies” on it's head, it's back, and it's side -- then tosses everything into a blender for a puree of absolute mayhem. Our other comedy takes us through a ten year, never-ending nightmare in the course of two hours. The film does it so perfectly that you’ll watch the film again to take in all the comedy genius of the lead actor and director. You'll do it over and over and over just to figure out how they managed a sublime feat!

    Episode Twenty-Two: Go West!

Way Out West (1937) & The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Like a hand in a glove, a dog with a bone, and a spoke in a wheel... our first film features a comedy duo unlike any other. They were the perfect fit - spanning vaudeville, silent movies, the talkies, and even television. Their pairing in a classic Western comedy has one of our favorite musical dance scenes ever. Our other "way out west" western takes a Japanese masterpiece and gives it a real American spin with 7 magnificent characters.

    Tributes: Robbie Coltrane

    Tributes: Robbie Coltrane

Robbie Coltrane once said, “I sometimes worry that all the beautiful things have been made.”

One of his first memorable roles in a film was in Nuns on the Run in 1990. Eventually, he would land a supporting role in the James Bond franchise that featured Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007. He appeared in both Goldeneye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999). His biggest break yet came when he was cast as Hagrid, the gentle half-giant, in author J.K. Rowling’s film adaptations of the Harry Potter series.

The More the Merrier (1943) & Annie Hall (1977)

"You make me want to be a better man." Melvin Udall

Two classic romantic comedy-dramas from two great directors thirty years apart, both get to the heart of the bumpy road to love; one taking place in  Washington D.C. in WW II where a person would find it hard to find a place to rest his head – let alone the perfect mate, the other happens in the “I Love New York “ era New York, when Times Square was a hub of hustlers and movie art houses sprung up like the spring daisies in Central Park. Both films bringing together unlikely lovebirds…

Brian Cox Loves Cinema Sounds & Secrets!

Brian Cox Loves Cinema Sounds & Secrets!

Next week, CSS is thrilled to release our first "Saturday Matinee with Friends" episode featuring the brilliant Brian Cox!

His memoir "Putting the Rabbit in the Hat" proves he is equally adept at writing stunning, sharp-edged sentences that are as riveting as his memorable film performances – such as playing the first incarnation of Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann’s Manhunter to his chilling portrayal of Matt Damon’s traitorous boss in The Bourne Identity. You’ll also know him from his most recent television work as the patriarch of the dysfunctional Roy clan in “Succession.”

    Episode Twenty: Groundbreakers

    Episode Twenty: Groundbreakers

Beverly Hills Cop (1984) & Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)

One of the great actor-directors in cinema, Sidney Portier, was already a huge star in 1967 – but today’s film is one of 3 truly terrific films from his career that year –  the mind boggles. The movie couches racism in an upscale comedy drama using familiar conceits, but there’s a truth right under the charm and tropes. Our other film is from a new buddy-cop genre inspired by the success of the groundbreaking 48 Hours. This film turned out to be the highest-grossing film in 1984 with over 300 million dollars at the box office and a soundtrack that went to number one on Billboard.

    Tributes: Raquel Welch

    Tributes: Raquel Welch

Welcome to another Cinema Sounds & Secrets Tribute episode! Today's tribute is for Raquel Welch:

Raquel Welch appeared in over 30 films and 50 television series before her death. She began her career as a struggling single mother, rose to fame, became one of the prevailing images of the Sexual Revolution, and built a career from dedication and brilliance. Most important to Raquel Welch is her sense of individuality. In a final quote from the star, she states, “Experiment, but always be true to yourself, your purpose, your attitude, your feeling. And be yourself. That's what real style is: It's being yourself on purpose. You can be influenced by other attractive women in the magazines or on the street but always make it your own.”

    Encore! - Humphrey Bogart

    Encore! - Humphrey Bogart

Encore! Encore! - This month we're revisiting some of our favorite episodes from the last year. This week, a tribute to Humphrey Bogart.

Born in New York City on December 25, 1899, Bogart would have his breakout Hollywood hit in 1936 with The Petrified Forest, in which he reprised his role as gangster Duke Mantee from the broadway success from only two years prior. Bogart embodied the most iconic role of his career just a year later as Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1942). Casablanca won Best Picture, which pushed WB to finally bill Bogart higher than James Cagney, WB’s golden boy for over a decade at the time, and would lead to Bogart becoming the highest paid actor in the world.
