    Episode Introduction

In this exciting episode of the Audio Signals Podcast, hosted by Marco Ciappelli, we step outside the tech world and delve into the creative realm of storytelling, child psychology, and the magic of children's literature. Today, Marco engages in a rich dialogue with the multi-talented children's author, neuroeducation consultant, and anxiety coach Noel Foy.

Throughout this enlightening conversation, Noel unravels the intent behind her fascinating stories for children and how they hold a deeper purpose beyond mere entertainment. This podcast will make you reconsider the role of storytelling, its historical roots, and its indispensable value in shaping our perceptions.

An anxiety coach and a mother herself, Noel expertly brings her wealth of knowledge into the narrative, particularly about the concept of executive function. She shares her unique insights on the necessity of cultivating cognitive, social, and emotional skills in children, which inevitably stimulates the listener's curiosity and provokes thought.

Marco then delves into Noel's latest book, "Are You a Bird Like Me?" to explore the impact of visuals on the learning process. In a compelling twist, this episode also showcases the collaborative dynamics between an author and an illustrator, a symbiotic relationship that breathes life into a narrative.

Perhaps one of the most captivating parts of the conversation revolves around the book's core theme, focusing on acceptance, diversity, and the power of collaboration. These topics, crucial for children, surprisingly resonate with adults, too, manifesting the universal appeal of children's literature.

As they dive deeper into the art of storytelling and its educational implications, the discussion also sheds light on an interesting concept - the anxiety inherent in uncertainty, which is as relevant to adults as it is to children. Furthermore, Noel's shared experiences about children's responses to adversity prompt reflection on the importance of teaching resilience.

So tune in to this thought-provoking episode of the Audio Signals Podcast with Marco Ciappelli and Noel Foy as they explore the transformative power of stories and the lessons they carry for all ages. You're encouraged to think, share, and subscribe to the podcast. Let's engage in this intriguing conversation together!

The Enterprise Podcast talks education and CIRA’s evolution into CIRA Education with CEO Mohamed El Kalla

The Enterprise Podcast talks education and CIRA’s evolution into CIRA Education with CEO Mohamed El Kalla

How CIRA evolved into a fully vertically-integrated, multifaceted, education platform and became CIRA Education: Since its founding in 1993, Egypt’s largest listed private sector education company, CIRA Education (formerly just CIRA), weathered many storms and challenges to the sector.  Just two years ago, covid had shut down classrooms, distance learning was a thing, and foreign ownership limits had been instituted for the private sector. Most recently, the sector was slammed by the high inflation, while legacy problems remain, including a high population to classroom ratio and a fragmented regulatory environment. CIRA Education survived these changes by not just adapting, but leading on some of the sector’s milestones.

This year was no different. CIRA Education is helping proliferate liberal arts education in Upper Egypt with the launch of Badr University. It is also introducing the concept of technical universities to Egypt by breaking ground soon on Cairo Saxony university. The company is also making its foray into pre-K outside of Cairo with the launch of a pre-K school in Fayum. There’s also CIRA Talent that looks to build viable career paths for artists, dancers, musicians and athletes across the nation. And running the infrastructure for the whole operation is CIRA Services.

Then, there’s the company’s three-year, EGP 2 bn future flow bond sale — Egypt’s first — which not only made the company an innovator in finance, but gave added credibility to the argument that education is a defensive sector.

Here to discuss all that transformation with the Enterprise Podcast is CIRA Education’s CEO Mohamed El Kalla. His love for social entrepreneurship has its roots in his student days, where his advanced studies in refugee law saw him living with nuns, and his subsequent work with the UN saw him lead programs in Darfur. During his time there, the UN had begun to see the importance of the private sector in enacting tangible change on the ground and he himself had worked on developing CSR and sustainability practices and bottom of the pyramid social engagement. He took on those lessons when he returned to the family business back in 2009, where item #1 on his agenda was instituting transparent governance. He has helmed CIRA Education’s evolution ever since.

    Finding Your Place

    Finding Your Place

For would-be college applicants, questions about “place” are crucial to the discovery and search process. Place may mean the geographic setting and physical attributes of a campus, and whether students can envision themselves there. But it can also encompass dorms and classrooms, and whether classes are primarily taught by faculty or assistants; the quality of support services, whether academic or social-emotional; and climate, not just the average temperature but also how welcoming and inclusive a college community is. This week on the Admissions Beat, in an encore episode of its predecessor broadcast, The Search, from April 2021, host Lee Coffin of Dartmouth walks students through the many dimensions and definitions of place, and ways they can take the measure of itas they finalize their application plans as the deadlines approach.  He's joined by two guests, both from Duke University: Mary Pat McMahon, vice provost and vice president of student affairs, and Gary Bennett, a professor of psychology and neuroscience who is vice provost for undergraduate education.

Service & Teaching with Joshua Price and Jeb Branin

Service & Teaching with Joshua Price and Jeb Branin

Join Joshua, Jeb, and host Tony Pellegrini as they discuss teaching, learning, and service at Southern Utah University (SUU).  Dr. Joshua Price received the 2021-22 Faculty Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Price came to SUU eight years ago and has made an indelible impression on the campus community. With a bachelor’s degree in economics from BYU and two master’s
degrees and a Ph.D. in economics, policy analysis, and management from New York’s Cornell University, he uses his extensive knowledge to inspire students by tailoring his courses to their interests. Aside from his work as an associate professor of economics and director of the Health Education Action Lab (HEAL), he volunteers his time to provide color commentary for radio coverage of SUU women’s basketball games and to mentor new football recruits. Josh supports all of his students both inside and outside of the classroom with his knowledge, kindness, and humor.

Dr. Jeb Branin was one of three 2021-22 Distinguished Educator recipients. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration who has taught and nurtured SUU students for 24 years. He has earned degrees from Snow College, Utah State University, and Brigham Young University. He teaches many general education courses for his department, and in the past, taught “English Through the Internet” courses through the MOFET Institute and Talpiot Teacher College in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Additionally, he designed the “SUU in London” program, taking students and community members to London, England, to study theatre. Jeb carefully constructs his courses using the principles of intentionality, interconnection, and reflection and believes that failure is essential to learning. He provides his students opportunities to fail safely and learn by correcting their mistakes.

    Exploring the Constructs of EdTech

    Exploring the Constructs of EdTech

Hosts Clarin Collins and Sean Leahy talk with Leigh Wolf and Audrey Watters about the futures of educational technology, how we have come into an era where technologies are present in almost all classrooms and how that has changed teaching and learning in significant ways. Our guests chat about how we could create a more humanistic approach to existing and emerging EdTech, and how EdTech can become a roadblock for teachers. Our panelist help us unpack what EdTech really means, and define it in a broader sense than a “computerized” or “digital” tool only. They invite us to think critically about what EdTech could be in the future and how to help it become more equitable and accessible.
