The Turkey Trot Chronicles (pt 1) - Lucky Feet Shoes' Nichole and Kevin talk walkin' the walk.

In the crisp Thanksgiving morning of 2022, Claremont Speaks went to the Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Turkey Trot, seeking to talk to those involved with the event.  The ace pattaloog/sneaker-head team from Lucky Feet Shoes of Upland, Nichole and Kevin, were doing their best to educate and entertain the throngs of runners and those cheering them on.  With their unrivaled command of footwear technology - and a dose of humor - they took a few moments to talk kicks with Claremont Speaks, and impart some little known facts about the importance of choosing the right shoe - or clog - and how it can affect one from the ankles up - even jaw alignment.

Stepping Out in Style with Crocs President Michelle Poole

Stepping Out in Style with Crocs President Michelle Poole

Our guest this week is Michelle Poole, President of Crocs. As Crocs celebrates its 20th anniversary we dig into the remarkable growth story behind the increasingly iconic footwear company. We address head-on the polarizing (or is it fundamentally under-estimated?) nature of the brand and how Michelle has turned that to advantage. We also learn about the personalizing power of jibbitz and how product extensions and geographic expansion are fueling their growth. We also delve deep into the diverse, increasingly digitally-driven, go-to-market strategy that is putting the company on a path to hit $5 billion in sales by 2026. Lastly we get Michelle's perspective on how to balance purpose and profits.

But first we take on the news of the week, including earnings from three DTC brands. Lululemon was first out of the gate with continuing strong results. RH also turned in another solid quarter, but their CEO called out concerns about increasing headwinds. Lastly, Chewy continues the trend of "profitless prosperity" for disruptor brands as they reported strong sales and mounting losses. Their co-founder (Ryan Cohen) also gets this week's chutzpah award for pushing big changes at Bed, Bath & Beyond when his company has yet to break-even. We also touch on all the store openings from Five Below and other value retailers and when this music might stop.

Here is the episode with Vuori's CEO Joe Kudla that Michelle mentions.

And don't forget to check out our bonus episode recapping this year's Shoptalk conference, recorded live from high above the Vegas Strip.

DOWN THE DRAIN AND BACK AGAIN: Wastewater plays important role in Southern Nevada’s water cycle

DOWN THE DRAIN AND BACK AGAIN: Wastewater plays important role in Southern Nevada’s water cycle

Southern Nevada recycles 100% of the water it uses indoors—extending our limited water supply. For every gallon treated and returned to Lake Mead, we can pull another gallon out of the lake. Kim Adler, Assistant Manager at the Clark County Water Reclamation District, talks about how the “unseen utility” plays a high-profile role in treating and reusing Colorado River water in the valley and provides tips for holiday cooking cleanup on episode 19 of the Water Smarts Podcast, “Down the drain and back again.”

Episode 50: Dutch Stereotypes with Stef, Ellie

Episode 50: Dutch Stereotypes with Stef, Ellie

Hello and welcome to "The Lazy Sunday Show".

For today's episode we have Stef and Ellie on the show to talk about the beautiful land of the tulips; The Netherlands!  It was an interesting episode because Stef is born and raised in The Netherlands, while Ellie is from France but currently living there, so there was an outsiders perspective as well!  I tried to ask both the easy and hard questions, like "Are Dutch people very blunt and frank with people?"  "Why is orange the national color?" and "does everyone really smoke weed and party?" and everything in between!

Sit back, relax and enjoy the show, also keep up to date with everything on my Facebook page "The Lazy Sunday Show".  The amazing artwork by Silja Naubert, and check out the new clothing line at thelazysundayshow.com to support The Lazy Sunday Show!

    18. Crocs, Barry Bonds, VW Bugs

    18. Crocs, Barry Bonds, VW Bugs

Phil and Jake continue their record-breaking streak of adding items to the List of Every Damn Thing by ranking the clog-like footwear known as Crocs, controversial home-run king Barry Bonds, and the Volkswagen Type 1 (aka "Beetle" or "Bug").

If you have something to add to the List of Every Damn Thing, let us know by sending an email to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter and Instagram).

    SHOW NOTES:

    • In the episode, your humble hosts wonder what material Crocs are made of. It turns out to be a proprietary foam resin called Croslite.
    • Phil and Jake also speculate over where Crocs come from. Phil was closest when he said he thought they're from Boulder, Colorado; Crocs, Inc. is based in the nearby town of Niwot. All their manufacturing is outside of the U.S., though.
    • Here’s a Croc in chill mode, and here’s one in attack mode.
    • We weren't sure about the opening of AT&T Park (now Oracle Park) in relation to Bonds' steroid use and home run record-chase. It looks like Bonds started steroids in 1998, the baseball park opened two years later in 2000, and Bonds started breaking home run records in 2001. Here's an article about a book that traces the timeline.
    • We discuss a number of high-profile athlete doping stories, including Alex RodriguezLance ArmstrongSammy Sosa vs. Mark McGwire, and Jose Canseco (whose Twitter feed is wild).
    • Jake's great-grandfather Arky Vaughan is a hall-of-famer who's been called the second-best shortstop in MLB history (after Honus Wagner).
    • Here’s an article about the 1960s VW U.S. ad campaign that Phil references, and here's some info on the Hozbrenner (wood-burning) Beetles that Jake talks about.
    • The type of hat that Sherlock Holmes wears is called a deerstalker.

Reverberations – May 2011 (Steve Reich, Bryce Dessner, Owen Pallett Kronos Quartet, Tyondai Braxton, Max Richter & more)
'One of a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history' (The Guardian), Steve Reich has been an influence for generations of musicians since the 1970s, and up to today's musical landscape - where the boundaries between rock and classical seem to have disappeared progressively. The Barbican celebrates this influence with six unique concerts on Sat 7 & Sun 8 May in London, featuring groundbreaking collaborations, four Reich premieres and new music. Visit http://www.barbican.org.uk/reverberations for more info and to book tickets.
