What if the Houston Rockets not only drafted Michael Jordan, but also kept Hakeem Olajuwon AND picked up Clyde Drexler as well? It sounds unbelievable, but Hakeem in his own book stated that on draft night, the Blazers offered Drexler and the number 2 pick in the 84 draft for Ralph Sampson, giving the opportunity for the Rockets to build the greatest trio in league history. Let’s be clear, growing up… John Starks was my favorite player.  I knew all his stats, all his moves, his history, and his rivals.  I chose #3 for all my jerseys while playing sports and even brought in his basketball card to the barbershop so the barber can cut my hair just like his.

It wasn’t just because he was an incredible player.  He was the HEART of the team. The city loved him and when he got hot, he got HOT!

He’d be asked to guard the toughest players in history, such as Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler, and Michael Jordan.  And he pretty much got each of those guys riled up at one point or another.

Whether you’re an athlete, a business person, or an employee… learning how to play/work with passion and become the heart of your team and the energy that fuels everyone is invaluable.

Still, to this day, I’ve never seen anyone work like Starks did. I’ve never seen anyone care so much about the city and overcoming the odds.  And in this interview, we cover it all…

This is my commentary based on prior conversation with Garrett Kruithof, an actor who has performed in projects like A&E's Bonnie & Clyde, Deepwater Horizon, and Starz's Magic City.

I discuss some of my takeaways from my conversation with Garrett and then I comment on some of the films and TV shows that I watched to prepare for the interview. Some of the discussion topics include

• Working within a community to gain traction in the industry
• How filmmakers can get actors to adjust their performances
• Sex and violence on screen and how its depictions in Magic City influenced me
• Why so many Hollywood purveyors of violence seem so outspoken on the gun debate
• The kinds of assumptions I sometimes make about a director behind any given project
• Why setting a good example on screen and in reality can make a difference.
