Affirmations, OCD, and Gen-Z mental health - with Malick Mercier

We're all constantly working on ourselves and our brains, right? That is definitly true for Malick Mercier. On his social media, you'll see him talk about mental health, aviation - one of his goals is to become a pilot one day - and all the other things he’s manifesting for himself in his life. He calls himself "Gen Z’s journalist," and he's constantly putting himself out there and is using his voice for good!

So I loved talking to Malick about OCD and exposure therapy in the middle of a frickin’ pandemic, how to look for and see love in the world, and how Gen-Z might be the best generation so far at asking for help.

PS we recorded this episode back in June - it's all still relevant today, but just FYI in case you notice Malick mentioning, "it's getting warmer out!" 🤣

    23: 8 Things I Wish I Knew At Graduation

    23: 8 Things I Wish I Knew At Graduation

I don't know about you but I love graduations and I'm a sucker for a good graduation speech. Something about that transition from being a student to adulthood (such a scan btw) always has me in my feelings about the journey culminating in those moments where we don our caps and gowns. Celebrating the accomplishment and looking ahead with great hope for the future.

When Nina reached out to ask that I share things that I'd tell my younger self, I had to do it! I could have gone on and on but I wanted to keep it around 20 minutes (way longer than a typical graduation speech). Here are 8 things I wish I knew as a brand new graduate:

    1. You are not behind on life, not now, not ever
    2. Focus on relationships always but know that they will evolve
    3. Normalize therapy and asking for help
    4. It's time to get down and dirty with your finances
    5. Cultivate the habit of giving back
    6. Decide who you are or the world will define you
    7. No one has done this before, we are all winging it
    8. Always do your best work

Bonus: Find your voice and use it, but don't wait to feel courageous. Move even in uncertainty.

This episode is for the new graduate, the not-so-new graduate, or for the person in a season of transitions. I hope this episode meets you where you are. Over here at The Rich Immigrant, we are rooting for you in all seasons!

How to find community in a new city

How to find community in a new city

On this episode, Thamina is joined by Whitney Hazard who is a Product Marketing Manager at Google. After graduating from college in 2018, Whitney moved to San Francisco for her dream job, expecting to be able to build a social life that mirrored the one she had in college. However, soon she found out that the social change from school to adulthood is a lot more drastic than we give it credit for. Whitney is candidly sharing her experience of building relationships in a completely new environment.

    Some highlights:

“These first months can be a little bit painful and sad at times because you feel like ‘When am I going to get to that point of having those deep, meaningful relationships?' but it just requires time and investment and sharing experiences and sharing who you are and treating people the way you want to be treated as a friend and then those relationships will turn into more.”

“I kind of went naively into my life in San Francisco expecting to build a social life that mirrored the one I had in college. In college I was so used to being able to maintain dozens of friendships, being in all sorts of groups [...] but the fact of the matter is that working a full-time job, trying to live in a new city, doing all the things that adulthood requires that leaves you with less time for friendships than in college. As a result you can’t maintain as many high-quality relationships.”
