    Marcus Garvey's  United Negro Improvement Association
    Marcus Garvey's United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) had more than 700 chapters in 38 states alone in the early 1920s, including hundreds of more chapters throughout the world. The UNIA championed Black nationalism, self-determination, and Black entrepreneurship. Garvey founded the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC) in 1919 and offered stock in it to African Americans as a means to help Black people to achieve economic independence. Among its many activities, the NFC ran grocery stores and restaurants in the early 1920s.

George Schuyler, founder of the Young Negro Cooperative League, and Ella Baker, assistant of the Young Negro Cooperative League, organized food co-ops and Black-owned and operated grocery stores throughout the U.S. during the Great Depression to aid the Black community in economic independence and food self-sufficiency.

    Dr. Frederick Douglass Opie discusses Zora Neale Hurston’s early twentieth-century ethnographic research and writing. It emphasizes the essentials of food in Florida including everyday meals as well as special occasions and looks at what shaped people’s eating traditions in early twentieth century Florida. Opie shows that Hurston did for Florida what William Faulkner did for Mississippi—both provided insight into a state’s history and culture through various styles of writing and contributed to a larger southern canon.
