Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where we have the privilege of speaking to a Future Hall of Fame Rowing Coach, the highly-esteemed, Mr. Dave O'Neill of Texas Women's Rowing. It was about time that we had the Seven-Time Big 12 Coach of the Year, 2022 USRowing Man of the Year, 2022 Rowing News Coach of the Year, and '21 & '22 NCAA National Championship Head Coach along with Five-Time CRCA National Coach of the Year, with a plethora of other accomplishments and award recognitions... O'Neill cemented himself as an icon in this sport.

After speaking with newly Assistant Coach, Alexa McAuliffe '22, on the podcast earlier this year, Longhorn Legends - Kate Knifton '23 & coxswains Rachel Rane '23, Z Romero '23, the Texas Women's Rowing podcast with the middle four of the 2023 Varsity 8+, and Alexa Matos '26 prior to her start in the Fall of 2022, we have had the honor of hosting podcasts with much of the Texas Rowing roster, so we only felt that it was right to host Coach Dave O'Neill, who stands at the helm of the program.

This episode was one for the books, as we covered many different topics, speaking closely on the state of the squad this past spring season in 2023, elaborating more on his coaching strategy, coming to Texas after spending 16 years at Cal, benefits of being a Power-5 Conference rowing team and as a student-athlete, what being a Texas Teammate means to him and the coaching staff, Day in the Life of a Longhorn, responding to an incredible Q&A providing more depth on the program and how he (along with the coaching staff) operate on the daily.

Dave spent four years studying at Boston College, while rowing on the Men's Rowing Team. O'Neill resides in Austin, Texas with his family. Another one! After the Women's Rowing segment, I thought it would be smart to hear the story from freshmen on the University of Pennsylvania Men's Heavyweight Rowing team... Jack Paterno, Arya Venugopalan, and Jack Theodore. The gents had a great career rowing for the Quakers, and today they gives us the run-down for what it takes to be an athlete at Penn and compete at such a high level. They all just competed at their first IRA National Championship, and have tons to share. Tune in!

Adding flavor to the coxswain featured series, Ethan deBorja, current sophomore coxswain for Oregon State Men’s Rowing, joins us on FSP. Ethan was born and raised in Virginia, coxing Resilient Rowing in his high school years. Since his freshman year coxing in college, Ethan has been selected as the Oregon State Varsity 8+ coxswain. This absolute stud, comprised of pure compassion, empathy, and dedication, Ethan influences the For Stars community of his overall journey in the sport and overcoming adversity in his youth rowing years, along with aspirations for the rest of his collegiate career.
