Martha Washington & Katharine Pittman -- The First First Lady and the Nation Builder Who Portrays Her

Martha Washington & Katharine Pittman -- The First First Lady and the Nation Builder Who Portrays Her

The George W. Bush Presidential Center recently welcomed a very special guest: the first first lady of the United States, Martha Washington.

Mrs. Washington shaped our country and the role of the first lady in the 18th century. The Nation Builders at Colonial Williamsburg, like Katharine Pittman – who was actually here portraying Mrs. Washington – work to ensure her impact and those of other key historical figures live on today through engaging, well-researched, and historically accurate experiences.

Host Andrew Kaufmann spoke with Katharine who, as Mrs. Washington, talked about her experience as the first lady in a newly formed country, the hardships and joys that come with public service, and her important role in post-Revolutionary War politics.

We also discuss Katharine’s passion for history and her journey to becoming a Nation Builder at Colonial Williamsburg on this episode of The Strategerist, presented by the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

We go way Back In the Day to the release of Nintendo's Game Boy.  It revolutionized video gaming and was at the top of the list for kids at Christmas when it was released in 1989.  What made it so popular?
It's the time of the year for beloved Christmas season television specials.  This week is the Top 5 list of them.  Which ones made it?  Is there a Grinch?  Or a red-nosed reindeer?
Of course there is a new This Week In History and Time Capsule looking back at the release of Michael Jackson's Thriller video.

Ep 133 A Little Ditty About Jack & Kim...Two American Kids Raising British Sheep

Ep 133 A Little Ditty About Jack & Kim...Two American Kids Raising British Sheep

It’s that time of year again, and we can hardly wait.  The super extravaganza known as The New York State Sheep and Wool Festival is back in 2021.  Okay, so we just call “Rhinebeck” because, after all, it’s tons easier than remembering the acronym.  But it’s here!

Running up and down the aisles of the livestock barns was one of the joys of our filming lives, and the people we spoke with were fascinating.  One of those moments was our conversation with Kim and Jack Mastrianni from Maple Frost Farm in Langdon, New Hampshire.  Not only was Jack wearing a deliciously chunky sweater (do not touch the personal textiles, Elara), but Kim has a history connection that is truly something to speak about.  And, of course, there was that gorgeously soft and fluffy Leicester Longwool sheep standing there.  That one was safe to pet, even if the sweater wasn’t.

We’re whetting your appetite by bringing you a podcast that will help tide you over until October 16th and 17th, when Rhinebeck comes alive in the virtual realm - and in-person.  You bet your sheep it does.

Ep 109 Elaine Shirley and the Sexy Side of Infrastructure

Ep 109 Elaine Shirley and the Sexy Side of Infrastructure

Infrastructure.  Is it a “sexy” word for most people?  Definitely not.  But to some of us, the truly exciting part is that effort now can often translate to big gains in the future. Building something that will last long after you’re gone takes time, focus, thought, and usually quite a bit of money.

You might think we’re talking about all that stuff with the massive stimulus spending swirling in the news this week, but that’s not a pile we want to step in, over or through (how many zeros are in a trillion, anyway?).  But it does bring up a point – why is infrastructure investment important?  The answer is, whether it be an investment of time, or thought, or capital, when you spend on things that will improve an item or a quality of something over time, the benefit can be magnified in the future.  The guy we’ll talk about today did just that, and he changed the face of agriculture forever.

Elaine Shirley met up with us in Colonial Williamsburg back in 2016 to give us a grand tour, replete with history.  We’re bringing you her story of the Leicester Longwool sheep breed and its founder, Englishman Robert Bakewell.  You might not have heard of him before, but his influence on agricultural genetics and perpetuating breed typing had lasting impact on not only the concept of scientific management in farming, but our view of genetics in all fields of study.  If you get an immediate mental picture of a specific breed type when one is named (e.g. German Shepherd dog), Bakewell might be the guy you should thank.  All that, and his Leicester Longwools sometimes glow like a lightbulb when you put them in the sun.

And speaking of thanks -- Elaine – you’re a true champ.  Nankins and Devons and Leicesters – Oh, My!

Episode 9: Norman Kennedy Spins Tales of Waulking

Episode 9: Norman Kennedy Spins Tales of Waulking
It's easy to fall under the spell of Norman Kennedy as he shares stories of the old ways of spinning and weaving, which he learned from some of the last practitioners of their crafts. Growing up in Scotland, Norman was fascinated by the stories that the older spinners and weavers told—and even as they thought he was crazy to want to learn, they gladly explained what they knew: how to make durable cloth efficiently as part of a life of hard work. While he picked up textile knowledge, Norman also picked up songs in many languages. Spinners and weavers may claim him as our own, but Norman's first visit to the United States came in 1965, when he sang at the Newport Folk Festival (the same year that Bob Dylan scandalized the crowd by plugging in an electric guitar). Returning to the United States the next year, he continued to sing while eventually serving as Master Weaver at Colonial Williamsburg. In the 1970s, he moved to northern Vermont and founded the Marshfield School of Weaving. The school continues to teach traditional spinning and weaving techniques and houses the largest collection of working 18th and 19th century looms in the United States. Norman has taught classes, given concerts, and led waulkings around the world. In 2003, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, which is the United States' highest honor for folk and traditional arts.
