    Blade (1998) & Blade II (2002)

    Blade (1998) & Blade II (2002)

Have you heard of Blade? He's the scourge of the vampire world and is what they refer to as a "Daywalker" - he has all of their strengths....NONE of their weaknesses.

And he's played by Wesley Snipes, have you heard of him? He was one of the bigger action stars of the '90's back when action stars were actually a thing which would draw folks to go to the movies.  The lore of Blade and the charisma of Snipes seemed to be an ideal match at the time and twenty-five years ago this month, we saw the release of that first Blade movie (starring Snipes in the titular role) which was directed by Stephen Norrington.  It was not only a surprise hit at the box office but it also earned the distinction of being THE first successful feature film adapted by a Marvel Comics property.....and obviously was far from the last.  It co-starred Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, and N'Bushe Wright.

Four years later came the release of its sequel directed by Oscar-winning genre legend Guillermo Del Toro - both Snipes and Kristofferson returned to be joined by a pretty impressive extended cast including Ron Pearlman, Leonor Varela, Norman Reedus, Luke Goss, and the legendary Donnie Yen.  In honor of the 25th Anniversary of this seminal cinema property, what better way to celebrate than a special DOUBLE-FEATURE review of those first two Blade movies!

    Iron Man 3 (2013)

    Iron Man 3 (2013)

Ten years ago, audiences were treated to what would be THE final stand-alone movie focused on the character of Tony Stark/Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr.....and for his solo swan song, he helped bring over an old friend to direct, Shane Black.  Black had previously directed RDJ in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang eight years prior, a dark action comedy which is among several notable entries in the buddy cop drama written by Black including the original Lethal Weapon.

Also returning for this "three-quel" are the previous Iron Man films are Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau.....now facing off a couple of new villains played by Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley.  The story focuses on a dangerous new technology developed by one of Stark's rivals which he must face head-on....often without the help of his Iron Man suit no less.  And what results is a superhero epic which is fast, funny, action-packed....and takes place during Christmas, go figure!

    Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

    Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

It's time to return to the fictional African kingdom introduced to us in one of the strongest films from the Marvel franchise which was also the RARE superhero movie to receive significant awards attention.  Black Panther actually received seven Oscar nominations including for Best Picture and ended up winning three - not bad!

Ryan Coogler also returns to direct though unfortunately the star of that film (Chadwick Boseman) passed away premature a few years after its release, leaving a void as this time around, there is no titular Black Panther.  So for this installment, the focus shifts to a few different characters including his sister Shuri (Leticia Wright), his mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett), and a new character from Marvel lore who emerges as a potential new threat to the people of Wakanda.....that would be Namor (Tenoch Huerta), the leader of an underwater kingdom.

    Dredd (2012)

    Dredd (2012)

Ten years ago, we saw the second big-screen adaptation of a popular British graphic novel – the previous one (Judge Dredd) which came out in the 1995 starred Sylvester Stallone and was widely disliked by both fans and non-fans of the original comic.  As a result, expectations for this latest version were pretty low in the lead-up to its fall release.

And then people saw it…..and most were pretty blown away!  The story was straightforward, the villain was memorable (Ma-Ma played by Lena Headey), the action was exciting, and even Dredd himself was portrayed by star Karl Urban as the bad-ass anti-hero that hardcore fans had been hoping for!  Unfortunately, it flopped at the box office….though this movie has had a devoted following every since.  Let’s revisit this now-cult classic directed by Pete Travis….or was that Alex Garland? :o
