Episode 3638: JAN. 6 ANNIVERSARY: Are we Terrorists or Patriots?

Before you buy into media reports that those who stormed

the Capitol were ’terrorists’, you should know the rest of

the story…. There will be a lot of fear mongering around

the 1 year anniversary, so you need to ask yourself who is

behind this ‘commemoration’ and why. Indeed, there is

more fuss being made of this anniversary than the 20

years of anniversaries for 9/11! At the same time they’ve

planned a day full of events in D.C., they claim to be

worried that some will storm the city again.

Dr. Carole wants her listeners to know that she watched

President Trump’s speech on the morning of January 6,

2021, and assures you that he never told people to be

violent, nor to damage property at the Capitol. You will

hear what he did say. Indeed, if Pence hadn’t selfishly

been thinking of his own political aspirations, and had

asked Congress to investigate the question of voter fraud,

the storming of the Capitol would never have happened.

Yet, you rarely hear people talking about this.

A recent poll found that 34% of Americans say that

violence against the government is sometimes justified. If

the American Revolution hadn’t happened, American

democracy wouldn’t have been founded. But, you rarely

hear people talking about that, either.

If we are going to call the those who charged the Capitol

“rioters” or “domestic terrorists,” then we certainly should

be calling those who rioted, assaulted, killed, looted,

toppled, etc. in the streets for the past years, the same

names. In fact, those who stormed the Capitol cannot be

called Domestic Terrorists, and you will hear why.

Over 700 people who were involved have been arrested

and charged with crimes. You will hear about some of the

most colorful ones. And finally, you will hear about who is

responsible for putting America at the greatest risk for

    terrorism - ‘domestic’ or otherwise.

VABF Day 7: Ann Hansen on Prisoner Organizing and Working With Allies

In this interview, Ann Hansen, author of Direct Action: Memoirs of an Urban Guerilla and Taking the Rap: Women Doing Time For Society's Crimes, discusses her work with the Prison for Women Memorial Collective (P4WMC). The group is dedicated to having a permanent Memorial Garden and Gallery for all of the women who died in federal prisons, to be located inside the now-closed P4W Prison. It is their goal to exhibit art, writing and films about the women in prison, so they will be remembered as the fully fleshed-out human beings they were. Ann recounts recent challenges her group faced working with non-prisoner allies.

    Episode 3427: COUNTDOWN TO 9/11…!

    Episode 3427: COUNTDOWN TO 9/11…!

This year, with Afghanistan becoming a hotbed for new terror plots,

it’s both the countdown to the 20th Anniversary and to a future 9/11

scale attack! Each year, the commemoration of the Anniversary has

been less and less - a BIG mistake for many reasons, including the

classic quote: “He who forgets history is doomed to repeat it.” And

this has never been clearer than today with our surrender in

Afghanistan. If someone would have told you, on 9/11, that 20

years later we would surrender to the enemies who attacked us,

you wouldn’t have believed it. Right? Yet here we are.

This year will be the hardest for us emotionally because, not only

will we be triggered by all the things that remind us of the first 9/11,

from what we ate for breakfast to all the news about terrorism, but

we will also face the current terror threat which has now been

magnified a million times over. Not only did we lose loved ones,

first responders and others on 9/11, we have lost loved ones,

troops and abandoned Americans still in Afghanistan. America has

been wounded twice and Americans are retraumatized by the same

enemy. The Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS are all terrorists and none

have forgotten their ultimate goal of taking over the West.

You will hear highlights of the things that have been happening

most recently in Afghanistan and in the U.S. that have the common

denominator of putting us in more danger - politically and physically.

And Dr. Carole gives you advice as to what to do on this Anniversary

and why - from planting flowers to reading books about heroes and

more. To conclude, she reads from her book, Lions and Tigers and

Terrorists, Oh My! How to Protect Your Child in a Time of Terror, to

give you an example of how to answer kids’ most frequently asked

questions - which will undoubtedly come up on this Anniversary and

    beyond.

    Sabbathing: From Creation to Christianity

    Sabbathing: From Creation to Christianity

God’s Sabbath was when He rested from all His work on the seventh day of Creation, but the term “sabbath” is first used when God gave the children of Israel a day to rest from their work, which turned into a commemoration of their deliverance from Egypt. The sabbathing of the Christian is not limited to a single day, but is a relationship of trusting Christ every day.

Season 4 Episode 14 - The Digital Era for VA's National Cemeteries

The National Cemetery Administration has been undergoing large modernization and expansion over the years. Largely influential to that has been current Acting Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Ron Walters. He discusses two key programs ahead of this Memorial Day allowing the public to learn about a veteran's life and leave tributes whether in person at cemeteries or digitally via the Veterans Legacy Memorial. Walters discusses the impact of technology on memorialization programs like these and how VA and NCA are positioned to continue to modernize toward a digital future.

Reclaiming Canada's Second World War with Tim Cook

Reclaiming Canada's Second World War with Tim Cook

In his new book The Fight for History: 75 Years of Forgetting, Remembering and Remaking Canada’s Second World War, Tim Cook reminds us that "if we do not tell our own stories, no one else will." But the ways in which Canadians have chosen to remember the Second World War has been far from consistent. Once viewed as the necessary war, the country quickly put the conflict behind itself. Cenotaphs built in the shadow of the Great War were simply given an addendum. There was no national Second World War memorial; no major monument to commemorate victories in Normandy or the Netherlands. For many years, when Canadians spoke of the war they spoke of tragedy, blunders and mistakes. But in the twenty-first century, Canadians and veterans have since reclaimed the legacy of the war. As veterans dwindle and historians open up new avenues for understanding this contentious past, Tim Cook joins us once again to make a plea to fellow Canadians to continue the fight for their history.

081 Part 1: Ellen Shane - On Honoring Her Daughter’s Memory by Making a Difference For Others

081 Part 1: Ellen Shane - On Honoring Her Daughter’s Memory by Making a Difference For Others

Ellen Shane was originally from Montreal, Canada. She moved to Los Angeles in 1996, just before the birth of her third child, Emily, in July 1996. Emily's tragic murder at the age of 13 in April 2010 changed her life - and that of her family - forever.

Emily was in 8th grade and in middle school when she was killed. They created the 501(c)3 nonprofit charity that bears her name very soon afterward. Initially, it was a site where people logged good deeds performed in Emily’s memory to honor her persona. After two years of enduring the court system regarding the homicide, she felt compelled to do more to honor her memory and help others.

Emily struggled academically due to dyslexia and processing issues. She fell in a “grey” area, not needing or even qualifying for any type of special education, yet facing challenges for her knowledge and ability to be reflected in her academic performance. Ellen had worked with her for many years, but starting in middle school, that became a less than harmonious arrangement. Children in middle school are at the age of shifting from their parents as being the major influence in their lives, to their peers. Emily wanted to be independent and resented my constant questioning and help - it became a battle.

It was her husband who observed that while she could help her with her academic difficulties, the result by 8th grade was major disharmony. Her husband wisely told her to go back to being Emily’s mother - not her tutor and constant force of focusing on her homework, grades, etc. They turned to outside help. After experimenting (hiring very experienced teachers, educational therapists), the surprising result was that she performed the best with university students.

It became clear why; they are young, and a middle schooler can easily relate to them. Also, there is a comfort level. Rather than someone older, who is perceived as an authoritarian figure, a university student is at an age to which a middle schooler can easily relate to. Besides, they make ideal role models, as they are in university.

Ellen's experience with Emily, in which she learned firsthand that there is nothing in the school system to address children who fit her profile (a middle school student in the mainstream classroom who risks academic failure) led her to be clear on what she could do.

She created the SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program to support those children who risked failure in the mainstream middle school classroom like Emily with the type of support they specifically needed to perform to their best academic ability.

Unlike Emily, the SEA Program is solely available to those students who could not otherwise afford the type of intensive and individualized academic tutoring, and mentorship SEA provides. Ellen teamed up with a middle school teacher who had taught for over 40 years, and he helped her put the Program together. She brought her perspective as a parent; he, as an experienced educator.

She decided to only focus on middle school-aged children, not only because Emily was in middle school, but because it is a critical time to “catch” those students who “don’t fit the mold” and help set them on the path to success. If a child is below grade level in one or more subjects or is lost in math, for example, addressing the issue and offering solutions are far better than having them pushed ahead to high school when they would be truly lost.

Not only does SEA allow students to have the support necessary in the subjects in which they are failing or truly struggling, the vetted and trained mentor/tutors also focus on two key areas: organizational skills and study skills. The only “cost” of participation: each child must perform one good deed or act of kindness for another, and it must be entered on our website. It is important to note that SEA hires mostly university students or recent grads. They provide a source of meaningful employment. In addition to the SEA Program, she has a private practice for grief support.

Ellen is not formally credentialed but studied grief extensively and took a course for practitioners with David Kessler (a known “grief guru”). Also - she has written a children’s book, a true story titled “Emily’s Gift: The True Story of Sherlock and Jackson”. It is the first in a series of true stories about their dogs. She has won several awards for her work with the SEA Program. While the creation of SEA was a way to cope with Emily’s death by being proactive, and she loves that their work and mission is all in her memory, what drives her now are the results.

There is nothing more rewarding than giving a child the opportunity for a brighter future. The results of SEA motivates Ellen to continue - and ideally expand (they just need the resources to do so). Two of the awards she has received that are of note: A Lifetime Achievement Award from President Obama in 2015, and A Malibu Times Citizen of the Year Award in 2013.

18: Art in Conflict with Hadia Gana

18: Art in Conflict with Hadia Gana

What is art? What is culture? And what role do they play in Libya today? We’re delighted to reflect on Libya’s conflict in a very different way with one of the country’s best-known artists, Hadia Gana. Hadia has worked with ceramics and glass and produced many fascinating installations, and as a leading advocate for cultural heritage, recently founded Libya’s first art museum. Discussing the link between art and justice brings to mind our conversations with the great Justice Albie Sachs, who, when appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa by Nelson Mandela, realised that art played an essential role in dealing with the ghosts of the country's Apartheid past. A powerful reminder of the vital link between art and justice!

Episode 31 - Haunted by Hitler

Episode 31 - Haunted by Hitler

In the summer of 1937, Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King spent four days in Berlin. He arrived at Friedrichstrasse Station, home of the impressive U-bahn subway which was built in preparation for the 1936 Berlin Olympics; a year later this same station would transport Jewish children to Britain. During his time in Berlin, King visited a Hitler Youth Camp, which was later absorbed into the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Before he returned to Canada, King sat face to face with Adolf Hitler at the Reich Presidential Palace. “My sizing up of the man as I sat and talked with him,” King later reflected, “was that he is one who truly loves his fellow-men, and his country, and would make any sacrifices for their good.” When King returned to Berlin in 1946, those sites that so impressed him nine years earlier were now in ruins. Today they are marked with memorials to the victims of Nazism. In his new book, Four Days in Hitler’s Germany: MacKenzie King’s Mission to Avert a Second World War, Robert Teigrob of Ryerson University, shares King’s travels through a history of Berlin before, during and after Nazi rule. In this episode of On War and Society, Teigrob sits down with Kyle Falcon to discuss McKenzie King’s four days in Berlin and the complicated moral questions that it raises about present-day diplomacy and historical commemoration.
