Holding on to the vision:Deborah Gregson

Holding on to the vision:Deborah Gregson

In this episode, Deborah talks about the mental space she was in after having 5 kids under the age of 6. She shares how she struggled with postpartum depression and during this time, how things got really dark and she even contemplated living. Deborah was constantly filled with anger and rage. She talks about how scary it was to reach out for help for the fear of losing her children. To add to that fear, the help that was offered was not an approach that she wanted to try. She talks about how her experience living through and treating her mental illness motivated her to go to school at 37. She shares her vision of what community service looks like and how she is working to create a compassionate approach within her own endeavours.

Deborah Gregson is the Executive Director and Founder of HeARTh Social Profit Company and the founder and CEO of DMG Do More Good Social Benefit Housing and Community Development Corporation. She is a wife, mother and grandmother. She is an artist, singer songwriter, renovator, mover and shaker, and a systems-oriented servant leader. Much of her art and music and her passion for community development comes from her healing journey from mental illness and the truths and insights she earned along the way. Deborah Gregson decided to get a counselling degree after battling with mental illness and through her own recovery she realized how difficult it is for human beings to move past illness when the systems they live and work in are not equipped to help them move into wellness. So, she changed her focus from one on one counseling to community development and systems transformation. She has worked in the field of community mental health and supports for a few years, trying to help build that community of care she knows is needed, and believes is possible.

Becky Getz: Community During Times of Loss

Becky Getz: Community During Times of Loss

Becky Getz and I originally had this conversation just weeks into the quarantine! We had no idea just how impactful this message would be to so many people!

Becky Getz and her husband David knew from their 18 week ultrasound that their son Zachary would need medical intervention, but from that moment, Zachary would continue to surprise the doctors and his family. God was very faithful to this family and God and their community became the rock they leaned on during Zach's life and after his death. Becky and I talk about Zach's story, the decisions they made, and the different ways that God has shown up at every step. We discuss why community is so important and how they can continue to serve after the loss of Zach.

    Gangs! A community-wide issue that demands a community-wide response!

    Gangs! A community-wide issue that demands a community-wide response!
This is Part 2 of a 2-part Series. brbr How does one identify if gangs are prevalent within their community? Today, Bob Florez, M.A., Youth Advocate, Program Developer and Counselor returns to discuss what average community members can do. What can schools and municipalities do about gangs? How does a parent increase “protective factors” and decrease “risk factors” for their children? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the next hour! We will look closely at what has worked in the past and allow that to inform the needs of the future. We must make changes necessary to help our youth grow into the adults that they deserve to be within our communities. brbr Our youth are our greatest resource. We are incarcerating young men at an alarming rate today and there is a dramatic increase in female enrollment! We must take action to preserve the future and offer our youth the potential they deserve.
