Who is Serving Seniors? Olive Community Services Shows Us How

Who is Serving Seniors? Olive Community Services Shows Us How
Olive Community Services, born five years ago in North Orange County, California has grown to provide a range of services providing seniors opportunities to lead more active and engaging lives which effectively counteracts the isolation and loneliness that many seniors experience in our families and in our communities. As with many other businesses and organization, Olive Community Services was able to pivot during COVID thereby providing effective online programs. These programs now effectively engage seniors whether they are able to attend in-person events but also serve the seniors that do not have that capability. As Olive Community Services serves to help seniors with their signature Live, Learn and Thrive program, the organization also continues to grow and thrive. Their most recent successful endeavor was participation in the Give65 program, an online giving platform for charitable organizations who serve vulnerable seniors. The program is designed exclusively for charitable organizations that serve older vulnerable adults who rely on these nonprofit organizations to maintain their quality of life by providing basic needs like meals, transportation, housing, activities, etc. Olive Community Services is now planning to share the what's how's and why's of their program in an Online challenge event in order to help other communities around the country learn how to serve the needs of the seniors in their communities.

"It is no secret that my past has not been a fairytale. It’s been filled with tragedy, sorrow, heartache, and grief. However, it is not my past that defines me. It is the present and the hope for a brighter future. The drive to move forward and create a life that my daughter can be proud of burns deep within me. I want her to know that her mama was resilient and overcame obstacles that some couldn’t survive." Hear more of Rana Dowdy's story in this week's episode of WIN.

The Changing Face of Care Delivery Part 2: The Primary Care & Community View with Steve Reed (Head of Community Services, York Teaching Hospitals NHS FT) and Dr John Ribchester (PCN Clinical Director, GP and Chair of Encompass GP Partnership, Whitstable)

The Changing Face of Care Delivery Part 2: The Primary Care & Community View with Steve Reed (Head of Community Services, York Teaching Hospitals NHS FT) and Dr John Ribchester (PCN Clinical Director, GP and Chair of Encompass GP Partnership, Whitstable)

With Steve Reed (Head of Community Services, York Teaching Hospitals NHS FT) and Dr John Ribchester (PCN Clinical Director, GP and Chair of Encompass GP Partnership, Whitstable, Kent) as our guides, we revisit the changing face of care delivery, this time from the viewpoint of primary care and the community. Steve and John give us their perspectives on out of hospital care and how it has been transformed during the pandemic.

In this COVID-19 series, Tom Clarke (Director -  NHS Insights & Interaction, Mtech Access) asks experts holding operational, strategic and clinical roles across the NHS to share their experiences and insights into how the NHS has responded to COVID-19 and the wider challenges facing the health service.

Tom begins by asking John to describe how primary care has changed since COVID-19 hit our shores in the UK, and the context of the pace of change for general practice. Tom then asks Steve to explain how he had been developing community services before COVID and the impact the pandemic has had on this agenda. Steve discusses how community services could change going forward and what role his teams could play for patients in the future. Tom then asks John about whether this could be a tipping point for primary care in terms of its scope and purpose, and what the most profound lasting changes could be.

This episode was originally broadcast on 29th May 2020 as a webinar. This podcast series has been converted from our webinar series 'How is COVID-19 impacting the NHS?'.

Must we trade privacy for the smart city dream?

Must we trade privacy for the smart city dream?

Smart cities have long been touted as the solution to managing the explosive growth in cities, making services and infrastructure more accessible and convenient to all. But for smart cities to work, vast amounts of data are prerequisites. That automatically brings into question citizen personal data and where a city, or enterprise such as Apple, draws the line between data privacy rights and the collective wellbeing of the city. In this episode, Ashwin Krishnan breaks down for us the current draw of smart cities, provides examples of what it is like to live within smart city boundaries, and what implications all of the “smarts” have on our personal data rights and freedoms.
