The Rise & Fall of Samson (Part 1)

The Rise & Fall of Samson (Part 1)

The biblical account states that Samson was a Nazarite, and that he was given immense strength to aid him against his enemies and allow him to perform superhuman feats, including slaying a lion with his bare hands and massacring an entire army of Philistines using only the jawbone of a donkey. However, if Samson's long hair were cut, then his Nazirite vow would be violated and he would lose his strength.

Samson was betrayed by his lover Delilah, who, sent by the Philistines officials to entice him, ordered a servant to cut his hair while he was sleeping and turned him over to his Philistine enemies, who gouged out his eyes and forced him to grind grain in a mill at Gaza. While there, his hair began to regrow. When the Philistines took Samson into their temple of Dagon, Samson asked to rest against one of the support pillars. After being granted permission, he prayed to God and miraculously recovered his strength, allowing him to bring down the columns, collapsing the temple and killing himself as well as all of the Philistines. In some Jewish traditions, Samson is believed to have been buried in Zorah in Israel overlooking the Sorek valley.

Consecrate Yourself for the Presence of God

Consecrate Yourself for the Presence of God

Holiness is the condition of being “set apart”.

    1. Set apart from the world
    2. Set apart for God

Consecration is an intentional and conscious process of personal holiness:

    1. “I set myself apart from...”
    2. “I set myself apart unto the purposes of God.”

Sanctification is a work of the Spirit to clean me up once I set myself apart.

    1Peter1:15-16

“But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy because I am holy.’”

    STAGE 1:

    Exodus 33 from verse 1 to 10.

Moses has spent 40 days in the tangible manifest presence of God.

He comes down from Sinai to find the Israelites worshiping a golden calf that had been handcrafted by Aaron:

    Ex32;4

“He took what they handed him and made it into an idol, cast in the shape of a calf, and fashioned it with a tool.”

Aaron led the people astray because he was a people-pleaser. (Gal1:10)

    Aaron says:

“I threw the gold into the fire, and out came a calf.” A blatant lie.

    1. Idols take time to build in our lives
    2. Idols are intentionally erected
    3. Idols are crafted with much dedication
    4. Idols cost us money.

Moses calls out “Whoever is for the Lord, join with me.”

They get sent to slay brother and neighbor and friend.

    Ex32:29

“You have been set apart (holy) to the Lord today because you were against your own sons and brothers, and He has blessed you this day.”

    STAGE 2: God responds!

    Reading EX33:1-10

God sends a plague and many die.

    Psalm 39:11

“When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin, you consume their wealth like a moth...”

    1. God is holy
    2. A Holy God does not cohabit with sin - sin separates us from God. “I will not go with you...”
    3. God punishes sin. Sin is contagious. “If I go with you I might destroy all of you...”
    4. The wages of sin is death
    5. Even in the OT, God makes a way. “I will send my angel ahead of you...”
    6. God always fulfills His promises.

    James 4:8

In this re-preached sermon, Pastor Michael Miano helps us "think through" the details of Numbers chapters 3-4. Using the contextual details to draw our Spiritually discerned application, Pastor Miano highlights that the different aspects of redemption revealed through the Biblical narrative lead us to greater views of worship.
