Jerry Bowyer: Toward a Principled Conservatism

Jerry Bowyer: Toward a Principled Conservatism

There seems to be a verbal civil war of sorts brewing over control of the Republican Party, and like any civil war, it pits brother against brother. The Powerbrokers of the GOP establishment face off against the Populists: power vs. populism.

Let me suggest we follow another “P”—principles.

We should unite around the fundamental principles of constitutionalism and ordered liberty, not around any particular personality, nor around the donor class or the party apparatus. We should instead unite around the founding ideas of America. We should support candidates who support the constitution and are conservative—whatever their previous or current relationship with or assessment of President Trump.

Let’s have no loyalty tests other than the constitutional one. We conservatives rightly condemned purges and purity spirals from the left, so let’s not imitate the worst in our opponents.

Hugh Hewitt: The Course of the Nation and the Georgia Senate Contest

Hugh Hewitt: The Course of the Nation and the Georgia Senate Contest

Why does it matter so much to rule-of-law conservatives that Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler win their January 5 runoffs in Georgia?

Because control of the Senate depends on it.

If Perdue or Loeffler win—preferably both—Senate Majority Leader McConnell keeps his job.

If Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock both win, Charles Schumer becomes the majority leader. And he’s made his agenda very clear:

“Now we take Georgia, then we change America!”

If Schumer wins Senate control, he can indeed “change America” by beginning the undoing of the capstone achievement of McConnell’s steady, disciplined six years as majority leader: confirmation of three Supreme Court justices and 53 appeals court judges.

With Schumer as majority leader, expect a liberal assault on the Trump-McConnell legacy of a federal bench bolstered by constitutionalism.

Watch those contests in Georgia closely.

The future of the Senate and the course of the nation under a Biden administration will be decided there.

Michael Medved: Biden’s Blunder on Court Packing

Michael Medved: Biden’s Blunder on Court Packing

Joe Biden makes a serious mistake when he repeatedly refuses to answer legitimate questions about his position on adding new justices to the Supreme Court—the same scheme of “court packing” that became FDR’s biggest blunder in 1937.

Biden says he’ll reveal his intentions after the election, but not before—denying voters a fully informed choice on November 3rd. The right answer should be easy: expressing confidence in the court and its moderate leadership by Chief Justice Roberts, while pledging no effort to add new justices unless there’s a sudden series of power-grabbing decisions that violate from the Constitutional mainstream.

Republican appointees have comprised the court majority for 45 years, but the Supremes have hardly moved in an ultra-conservative direction. Biden must ultimately come clean on his court-packing plans, or pay a political price for hiding information the electorate deserves.

S02 E12: Elections, Citizenship and Democracy (feat Dr Ornit Shani)

S02 E12: Elections, Citizenship and Democracy (feat Dr Ornit Shani)

The Indian Constitution guaranteed universal adult franchise from the moment it came into force. In a country with inequalities and divisions based on caste, gender, language, and ethnicity, this was a radical move that speaks of the vision of the founders.

Yet, the process by which universal suffrage became a reality remained shrouded in obscurity until recently. The credit for bringing to light the fascinating process of the preparation of the first electoral rolls in independent India goes to Dr. Ornit Shani who, on the basis of her painstaking original research, wrote the award-winning book, How India Became Democratic.

In this episode, we're joined by Ornit Shani to speak about her book, The insights and revelations about Indian democracy we get from the process by which electoral rolls were first prepared and why, perhaps, there's more reasons to be optimistic about India's democracy than we think.
