Back to Basics and Contract Brewing with K4

Back to Basics and Contract Brewing with K4

Passion. Hard work. Gun toting cats atop flame nostriled unicorns. This is Karben4 Brewing in Madison, Wisconsin.

The guys behind the popular beer - Fantasy Factory - and more at Karben4 Brewery talk about where they're headed now that they've hit year 10. While getting 'back to basics' with some of their most popular beers making a return, contract brewing is also a big part of K4's story and strategy.

How does the consumer feel about contract brewing? Do they care?

How does Karben4 keep their artistic voice while contract brewing?

Joe goes on a couple tangents to teach Ryan and Jonathan a thing or two about 'hop creep' and 'dextrins in beer' - Joe likes his beer dry afterall!

    E317: Finding Bevana

    E317: Finding Bevana

Teamwork makes the dream work at Bevana

It's not easy to build and grow a brewery.  Starting small can make expansion hard, and costly.  Distribution adds it's own challenges and even just getting your name out there is a struggle amidst 9,000+ breweries.  That's where Bevana comes in.

Originally founded as Community Brewing Ventures, the company rebranded this year as Bevana to represent their growth in non-beer beverages.  Sr. Director of Business Development Aaron Gore joined us this week to share what Bevana does for brewers and where they're headed in the future.  It's all about joining forces - for brewing, distribution, and marketing.  Bevana helps smaller brewers grow while minimizing the cost and effort to do so.

If you're a small brewer looking to grow, maybe finding Bevana is just what you need.

Gypsy Brewing Part 2 - Brad Walker from Sunday Road Brewing Co.

Gypsy Brewing Part 2 - Brad Walker from Sunday Road Brewing Co.

Continuing on with Part 2 of our Gypsy Brewing segment, I chat with Founder & Owner Brad Walker of the Sutherland Shire based brewery, Sunday Road.

Brad along with a number of other successful breweries, started out as a gypsy brewer before launching into his very own physical brewery.

Beginning his journey in 2016, bouncing around a couple different breweries such as Wayward in Sydney’s Inner West and Illawarra Brewing Co down Wollongong way, Brad learnt his craft and built the Sunday Road brand via the gypsy brewing path for several years.

In this episode, Brad shares his personal views and opinions of what gypsy brewing is, and what it isn’t, the differences between gypsy brewing today compared to when he and many other breweries started out down this same path, and he talks about his tough slog story of his gypsy brewing days, his learning and personal development about professional brewing, the business side of the brewing industry, plus all the challenges, mistakes, as well as successes leading up to the eventual opening up of his very own physical brewery.

Matty and Noah are talking remotely with the Kryptic Kid, the Vibe Valet, or simply the current head brewer at Twelve Percent Beer Project: Zac Ross. Though he and Noah are the same age, Zac's worked in 500% more breweries, including Voodoo, Kent Falls, The Answer. These days, while he's keeping the day-to-day in order at Twelve Percent's largely contract-based production facility, he's also producing beers for his own brand, Marlowe Artisanal Ales. His interesting arch in the industry isn't neglected from the conversation, but all roads of dialogue keep leading to Marlowe - a brand named after the proverbial Boss Ross (Zac's grandfather) that produces almost exclusively on sessionable, lower ABV beers. Zac breaks down the particular advantages Twelve Percent provides people like himself, who want to eventually open a brick-and-mortar brewery, but are getting their beers into the world at scale, in a way to give their goal steam.
Brewing philosophy dominates most of the conversation, with Zac's admittedly vague and "vibe-focused" approach providing a fun contrast to Noah's more obnoxious and verbose angle to discussing the profession they both love so much. This was a fun one, and ultimately takes a long look at the relationship between the place a beer is produced and the person that conceived of it.
