    Cornelius Becomes a Christian

    Cornelius Becomes a Christian

Until the conversion of Cornelius, the gospel message had been preached almost exclusively to Jewish people.  Any Gentile (anyone not born into a Jewish family) who wanted to follow Jesus would have first converted to Judaism.  But the good news of Jesus was for everyone and not just the Jews.  God used a vision of animals on a sheet and a miraculous pouring out of the Holy Spirit to reveal this important truth to the Apostle Peter and those he was teaching.  Following this, Peter baptised Cornelius, a Roman centurion, making Cornelius the first Gentile to become a Christian.

God wants everyone to hear about Him and become Christians.

    3. (Acts 10:23b-48) In Caesarea again:
      Cornelius is converted
      1. Cornelius welcomes Peter into his home

Peter explains everything to the Jewish Christians

    Tips for teaching children:

    • Define the words “Jew” and “Gentile”
    • Make a collage of pictures. To do this, you can first have children copy the words of 1 Timothy 2:4 on the centre of a paper or poster.  Surround these words with pictures of people.  These pictures could be ones you have gathered from magazines or downloaded from the internet and printed.  Children will enjoy cutting these out and glueing them to the poster.  If you prefer, the children can draw pictures of people instead of cutting and gluing.

    Tips for teaching adults:

    • This is a long story, but it needs to be read in class.  Divide the story into sections.  The best way is to do it according to the different scenes in the story.  Look for scene changes.  For instance, scene 1 would be 10:1-8, scene 2 would be v.9-16 and so on.  Choose a reader for each scene, and have the reader stand in a certain place in the room to read.  This would represent the different scenes in the story.  Then, read the story.
    •  Ask the class to reflect on the two primary characters: Cornelius and Peter.  What boundaries did Cornelius cross to become a devout follower of the God of the Jews?  How had his life already changed?  What boundaries did Peter have to cross to interact with Cornelius?
    •  Ask the class these questions: What are some good things about boundaries?  What are some bad things about boundaries?
    • Follow up with: What boundaries do you still need to cross for the sake of the gospel?   What boundaries must our congregation cross to take the gospel to people?

Acts 11-12 | Peter's Miraculous Escape and Barnabas Coaching Saul

Acts 11-12 | Peter's Miraculous Escape and Barnabas Coaching Saul

Ever wondered how the early Christian church grew from a Jewish offshoot to a distinct entity? Buckle up for a riveting journey back in time as we trace the roots of Christianity, from the disciples being first referred to as Christians in Antioch to the exemplary faith that enabled Peter's miraculous prison escape. But the story doesn't end there; we also delve into the hardships endured in the name of faith, including the ruthless persecution by Herod and the martyrdom of James. Through these narratives, the power of faith and the resilience of the early church is vividly brought to life.

From the shadows of a persecutor to the spotlight of spreading the faith, Saul's transformation into Paul is nothing short of extraordinary. The courage of Barnabas, who risked reputation to mentor Saul, offers profound insights into the importance of mentorship and discipleship in the Christian faith. Alongside these captivating narratives, we also delve into the perils of seeking personal glory, best exemplified by the shocking outcome of Herod's hubris. As we round off the episode, a triumphant return to Jerusalem by Barnabas, Paul, and John Mark sets the stage for future episodes, ensuring you'll be eagerly awaiting what comes next.

Acts 11 reveals a pivotal moment in the early Christian community, emphasizing inclusivity and the expansion of the gospel beyond Jewish boundaries. It begins with Peter's vision, where he learns that the Gentiles are not to be considered unclean or unworthy. This vision leads him to the household of Cornelius, a Roman centurion, and despite initial reservations due to Jewish laws, Peter witnesses the Holy Spirit descending upon Cornelius and his household. Baptizing them, Peter acknowledges that God's grace extends to all, regardless of their heritage or background. This chapter emphasizes themes of community, divine guidance, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the breaking down of cultural barriers within the Church.

Acts 12, in contrast, highlights the persecution faced by the early Church at the hands of King Herod Agrippa I. Herod imprisons and executes James, the brother of John, intending to further oppress the followers of Jesus. Sensing the approval of the Jewish authorities, he proceeds to arrest Peter. However, despite being heavily guarded in prison, Peter experiences divine intervention when an angel miraculously releases him. This remarkable escape from prison emphasizes the power of prayer and divine intervention in times of adversity. Meanwhile, Herod's arrogance and refusal to acknowledge God's authority lead to his downfall. An angel strikes Herod down, and he dies a gruesome death, demonstrating the consequences of opposing God's purposes. Amidst these trials and persecutions, the Church co

Join us as we debunk misconceptions surrounding Saul's transformation, highlighting the significance of his solitude in gaining deep understanding of the gospel. Using Paul's account from Galatians 1 as a reference, we draw attention to the importance of being well-versed in the gospel before stepping up to preach it. We caution against rushing young believers onto the platform, emphasizing the need for proper understanding and training before they are handed the baton.

Fasten your seatbelts for a journey through the remarkable stories of Saul's conversion and Peter's vision. We unfold Saul's encounter with the divine on his way to Damascus, bringing to light the crucial role played by Ananias in Saul's spiritual journey. Marvel at how Saul masterfully dodged the Jews plotting his murder and how he found his way to Jerusalem. We also dive into the groundbreaking conversion of Cornelius in Acts 10. Discover how one man's prayers not only reached the ears of God but also significantly impacted the early church. All these and more in this riveting episode of God's Plan, Your Part.

Acts 9 narrates Saul's conversion on the road to Damascus. Struck by a blinding light, Saul encounters Jesus, leading to his transformation and subsequent baptism by Ananias. His conversion astonishes many, and Saul boldly preaches about Jesus, facing initial suspicion but eventually gaining trust and support, notably from Barnabas.

In Acts 10, Peter receives a vision instructing him not to consider any person unclean or impure. Concurrently, Cornelius, a devout God-fearing Gentile, receives a vision to summon Peter. Through divine orchestration, Peter visits Cornelius and discovers God's intention to include Gentiles in His kingdom. The Holy Spirit falls upon Cornelius' household, confirming God's acceptance of Gentile believers. This pivotal moment challenges the traditional Jewish-Christian boundaries, revealing God's inclusivity and setting the stage for the expansion of the Gospel to the Gentiles.

Unclean - The Book of Acts

Unclean - The Book of Acts

In this Bible Story, Peter discovers that the kingdom of God is expanding to more than just the Jews. Through his interactions with Cornelius, Peter begins to learn that God was going to extend his reach to all the nations. This story is inspired by Acts 10:1-11:18. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Acts 11:9 from the King James Version.

Episode 225: In Caesarea, there was a centurion named Cornelius. He was a good man and a God-fearing man, but he was also a Roman gentile. He prayed to God daily and sought to do good to those who were less fortunate. His prayers were heard by God, and God told him in a dream to send for a man named Peter who was staying in Joppa. At the same time, Peter was praying and in a vision experienced a message from God about calling anything unclean or common. When the men sent by Cornelius arrived, he went with them, and when the whole party arrived at the house of Cornelius, Peter saw what God was trying to tell him. He then obediently preached the message of Jesus to Cornelius’ entire household. All of Cornelius’ family and friends came to believe in Jesus and were baptized.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

The distinction between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a unique event associated with the birth of the church, characterized by the filling of the Holy Spirit and the speaking of tongues, and it is not a normative experience for present-day believers–the gift of speaking in tongues ceased after the apostolic era.

    No longer common or unclean

    No longer common or unclean

What did Peter really learn from his vision in Acts 10?  This story of Peter’s vision is typically used as a way of teaching that God was declaring all foods “clean” or acceptable to eat. However, looking more closely at the context and outcome, we can learn more about its true meaning, along with some aspects of vigilance in our walk with God.

Now, what's interesting to note here is that in the original text, two different Greek words are used to describe the status of the animals. Peter says that he never had eaten anything common (koinou ) nor had he eaten anything ritually unclean (akatharton). Now there is wisdom in understanding the difference between that which is common and that which is unclean.

We can learn that the distinction between holy and common appears to be one of purpose: that which is holy is set apart for a specific use by priests or God's people only and that which is common is for everyday use by anyone. By contrast, that which is clean or unclean appears to be inherent in the thing itself, for example, those animals which were approved for eating versus those which were not approved for eating, likely due to the risk of contracting illness or disease.

Peter had taken the real meaning of the vision to mean that God was breaking down the barriers between men of different nations, and that the door of faith in Messiah would be opened to all who were willing to come. This was even confirmed to be the correct interpretation as the foreign men were visibly affected by receiving the Spirit of God (10:44-45).

Ultimately, vigilance in our walk before God comes in many forms, whether our own personal commitment to holiness, or our obedience to the things that God may reveal to us along the way. Peter exemplifies for us a measure of personal vigilance that we can learn from and follow in our own lives. He held tightly to the understanding of Judaism and maintained those traditions faithfully, believing that he was honoring God in doing so. Yet, when God revealed something radical within his current worldview, he was still willing to follow this new understanding wholeheartedly and unreservedly.

    They became silent - Audio

    They became silent - Audio
Peter returns to Jerusalem and the news of him eating in a gentile’s house was already known. So Peter explains that how, through a vision, God called him to share the Gospel with the Gentiles as well as the Jews. Peter related that at first refused but the Lord rebuked him, and Peter obeyed. As a result, he shared with the Gentile Cornelius and his whole household, and a “Gentile Pentecost” happened. Then Peter challenged the Jewish Christians: If God gave the Gentiles the same gift as He gave us, how can we say no? When they heard these things they became silent and then glorified God that the Gentiles were given repentance to life also.
