Episode 66 - Alex and Allyson Grey, Forging Their Own Magical Path

Episode 66 - Alex and Allyson Grey, Forging Their Own Magical Path

This all new episode of the MAPS podcast was recorded live at Psychedelic Science '23 with the legendary seekers of all things mystical, Alex and Allyson Grey. If you've heard a podcast with them before you know it needs no introduction.

NOTE - please excuse the glitch of the missing first 4 minutes of the interview. There were some technical issues at PS '23.

Allyson Grey, a conceptual abstract painter and co-founder of CoSM, Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, has long been a mentor and influencer of the contemporary Visionary Art movement. In 1971, in a psychedelic awakening through the guidance of Ram Dass’ book Be Here Now, Allyson heard a voice calling her to express in her art an essentialized world view. Chaos, Order & Secret Writing came to artistically symbolize the three essential characteristics of human perception, a minimal yet all-encompassing artistic statement worthy of immersion for a lifetime. Allyson’s art is a personal and shared meditation on the structure of thought, life and enlightenment.

Alex Grey is an American visual artist, author, teacher, and Vajrayana practitioner known for creating spiritual and psychedelic paintings. He works in multiple forms including performance art, process art, installation art, sculpture, visionary art, and painting.

The Greys have spent decades as artists, leaders, and mentors in the Visionary Art movement. They co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a sanctuary of visionary art to inspire every pilgrim’s creative path and affirm the values of love and wisdom.

Alex Grey’s renowned work has been exhibited around the world, and he is also the author of several books, including Sacred Mirrors, Net of Being, and Transfigurations.

Allyson is a conceptual abstract painter and co-founder of CoSM. Since 1975, she has shared a studio and been the partner of Alex Grey. Together, they co-host the CoSM Podcast.

025 — Alex & Allyson Grey: Psychedelic Mystical Experiences & the Expression of the Sacred in Visionary Art

025 — Alex & Allyson Grey: Psychedelic Mystical Experiences & the Expression of the Sacred in Visionary Art

Today’s show connects you to two extraordinary, transcendental artists that are world-renowned pioneers in showcasing the exploration of consciousness and use of psychedelics to influence the visionary art realm and the expression of the sacred. I go to New York’s COSM — Chapel of the Sacred Mirrors – to interview Alex and Allyson Grey in their personal art studios.

You truly must have a sense of their art to fully appreciate this interview. This is where the limitations of audio production can be challenging – so be sure to capture at least a passing view of a few pieces of their artwork that we have showcased on our website and/or the MizMaryland Facebook and Instagram pages.

Beyond the appreciation of Alex and Allyson’s other-worldly artistic talents, I have always perhaps most loved our conversations about consciousness, connection, and explorations of the sacred realms. Their views are very much in alignment with our mission at #SoulForcePolitics.

And a basic warning I should offer with this episode. We engage in an open-minded discussion of the impact that psychedelic medicines have had on the Greys in forming mystical experiences that have had a deep impact on their visionary artistic expression and world-view. I am aware that this can be a controversial topic for some listeners. I invite you to be open to a different perspective, as I have had my own shift in understanding how these medicines might be beneficial to some if undertaken with the right intention and under responsible guidance.

I always relish the role of being a thought leader and having the guts to jump into these types of conversations that can be controversial – and at the same time, this topic is very near on the edge of becoming more mainstream as just this week, New York Times best-selling author, Micheal Pollan has released his new book, “How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence.â€

So it’s time for us to start having this dialogue more openly in our communities. Artists and other creatives are often on the front-lines of helping us explore the unknown.

Thanks for listening and I hope that Alex and Allyson and I will open up new inspiration for you to be more creative, more revolutionary, and more willing to explore the depths of your own consciousness and sacred connections as a result of our conversation.

31: New MAPS of Hyperspace #2: interviews with Sasha Shulgin, Mountain Girl and Alex and Allison Grey
At the MAPS Psychedelic Science Conference 2010 with experiential journalist Rak Razam: * In perhaps his last public interview, Sasha Shulgin shares his thoughts on the future of psychedelics and the repositioning of 'drugs' in culture; the thrill of the chase in exploring virginal molecular landscapes and bringing back chemical maps; rules for safe ingestion and active levels of compounds... and the revelation of the most potent drug there is... * Carolyn (Adams) Garcia, aka Mountain Girl tells of her time in the boys club of the Merry Pranksters, hanging with Neal Cassady and Ken Kesey, and the gender politics of being the only girl with a motorbike for a thousand miles around La Honda in the early 60s... From the Pranksters to the Grateful Dead, and her marriage to Jerry Garcia, Mountain Girl has always been an integral part of the hippie tribe. Here she reveals the lessons of the infamous Acid Tests, the failure of "group mind", and her advice for women entering the psychedelic scene... * Alex and Allison Grey talk about the entheogenic origins of art and the mystic state of religion; the spiritual renaissance catalyzed by entheogens and a hunger for the transcendent; shamanic art and anchoring energy into this realm; the mapping of hyperspace by a generation of new psychedelic artists, and COSM - the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors and the Grey's mission to create a permanent home for visionary art...
