#53 - Zoe Edwards helps me with the foundation for a more sustainable sewing practice
Zoe Edwards joins us again! This time, we covered sustainable sewing and lots of things in between. I've asked Zoe to help me while I'm still quite new to sewing, to get a good foundation to a more sustainable sewing practice. From learning how to choose patterns to fit your body so you will get the most wear out of them -always the most sustainable option after not getting or making anything at all- and discussing different fabrics, you’ll learn a lot in this episode!

    QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE

“Every company has its own “sample size”-- its own set of proportions that they work to. Some of them.. they’re not gunna fit so well to your body and you’re gunna have to do a bit of work to make it fit. So always, always, always measure yourself before you start a new project.” They’re just numbers. They don’t mean anything.

#52 - Kim Witten: Yarn Over-thinking, create succes with the help of coaching, mentoring and craft

My coach, Kim Witten, teaches us the difference between coaching, mentoring and therapy. Then, we move on to topics such as the struggle we creatives have balancing structure and freedom (for our craft), and also have an enlightening conversation about “imposter syndrome”. Kim shares a comforting perspective and cites the two psychologists who coined the term in the 1970’s.

Enjoy this incredible conversation with Kim Witten, transformational coach, for the first episode of A Smaller Life in the new year.

#48- Elizabeth Joy of Conscious Style explaining conscious and sustainability lingo

In this episode, you’ll hear from Elizabeth Joy of Conscious Style.

Elizabeth is a content creator that cares about fashion and style in a conscious way. We talk about green washing, the use of wording and descriptions in the field of conscious fashion and educating through podcasts and other channels.

    Elizabeth Joy

    MAIN TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE

    1. The Big Brands often co-opt words used in the small, sustainable, earth-loving, crafting community and uses them to make money / green-washing
    2. “Ethical Fashion” is one of those terms
    3. “Circular Fashion” is a system that doesn’t produce waste and the items have no real “end-of-life”
      1. Items can be reused, recycled, upcycled, or sent back / repaired, etc
      2. Ex: Thousand Fell Sneakers - US https://www.thousandfell.com/
      3. Ex: MUD Jeans - NL https://mudjeans.nl/

    QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE

“When you search a term like, ‘ethical fashion’, a term like ‘sustainable fashion’... you see the Google ads of brands that are totally not sustainable. It’s really frustrating, right? They have the money, they have the budget to sort of, green-wash their way into sustainability, which… it feels like we’re up against a lot but, yeah. I just really think it’s important to educate; try to educate as many people who will listen and who are curious.”

#45 - Connecting the dots, planning & strategy in your craft business

In this episode I talk about the role of strategy in your small business and how you don't have to change all that much to make better use of the time and effort you are already investing in communication, marketing, branding and all those other 'icky' business words.

Hopefully you'll get some information about how thinking things through just a little bit more, can make a big difference in how you present yourself as a business.

CRAFTING A DREAM SEWING BUSINESS with Freya Gilbert and Sarah Wadey of Crafty Sew and So

CRAFTING A DREAM SEWING BUSINESS with Freya Gilbert and Sarah Wadey of Crafty Sew and So

When Freya Gilbert and Sarah Wadey met at a sewing workshop in 2014, they knew they had met a kindred spirit. Within months they followed their dreams of setting up a sewing business and opened their bricks and mortar shop Crafty Sew and So in Leicester selling fabric haberdashery and offering award-winning workshops. They used their skills gained in retail and the fashion industry to build their business which included a variety of craft workshops as well as dressmaking patterns and kits.

When Covid forced the shop to close after 5 years of business, undeterred, Freya and Sarah moved to the Crafty Sew and So workshop and put their business online. During the past 18 months they have not only continued to sell sewing essentials but have run online workshops attracting participants from overseas as well as closer to home. Now that Covid restrictions have eased they are beginning to offer in-person workshops too.

I'm thrilled that Freya and Sarah were able to share their story with me for Making Stitches.

If you would like to find out more about Crafty Sew and So, you can do here. You can also find them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

46: We All Need to do the Work with Fern Valley Botanics

Chatting with Elan of Fern Valley Botanics opened a world of inspiration and awareness. She is such a powerful and thoughtful force in the world! And she offers so much wisdom about listening to your intuition, creating a business and finding healing within the herbal and Black community. She just started a business and it is blasting off in the most beautiful way. Her work is so beautifully crafted and she operates from a heart centered space! She shares stories of her journey and the many reasons why she started her own business. We discuss issues about racial inequality and how we all need to do the work to make this a safe space for all.

    .

“I'm a fairly new homesteader that has been living in the Catskill mountains for the past four years! I came up from Brooklyn where I was born and raised. But the Brooklyn I knew had changed so much and didn’t feel much like home anymore but a place that really heightened my anxiety. I found some solace in the mountains and woods.

    👩🏾‍🌾

A huge part of me moving up here was to hone in on skills part of the legacy of Black Americans such as agriculture, crafting, carpentry/architecture, rearing livestock, and so much more! Recently i've been expanding into my carpentry! I started building a little storefront for guest to buy some of our produce goods and my soap ofcourse. It will be my experiment for getting myself ready to build my own cabin studio next. I will keep yall posted on the progress!

    👩🏾‍🌾

I was inspired to create a soap business after becoming a mom and wanting to create products where I had the agency to know what the ingredients were and making sure that they were safe and nourishing for my family and friends. I'm so happy to now share these same thoughtfully crafted soaps with you all!

    👩🏾‍🌾

Thank you for supporting this one women artisanal soapmaker! I am a herbalist in the Catskills who loves partnering with plants. I work hard creating the highest quality, love filled, and sustainable soaps because you deserve it!”- Elan
