MSM 495 Steve Grimm - Learning from the Aftermath of Katrina

MSM 495 Steve Grimm - Learning from the Aftermath of Katrina

As Hurricane Katrina churned across the Gulf of Mexico in late summer of 2005, Steve Grimm of Picayune was busy attending to the daily challenges of running Highlands Community Hospital (then Crosby Memorial Hospital).  While the storm ravaged the Gulf Coast on the morning of August 29, he and his staff tried to save medical records and equipment as the roof blew off the building.

In the episode, Grimm describes the situation they faced the morning after including, no security, only backup generators for power and shortages of food, fuel and other basic necessities of life.  He explains how they began to pick up the pieces and prepare for the next time even as they struggled to return to something close to normalcy.

According to Grimm, lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina will not be wasted.  He is proud of how his hospital staff stood up to adversity and confident that they will be better prepared moving forward.

    Americarnage #36: Three Wise Guys

Nat, Mike and Dan will drink your style down straight, no chaser, but sometimes they get bored of style and go looking for substance. No, not around the back of Lidl, they look for the things which really matter, the big questions: what power will TT be granted this week? Who's next up in the big job at Miami? And will they hire Condi Rice to take over Special Teams?

In other news: DENVER WIN AGAIN, taking a commanding lead in the AFC West; James Harrison became the first player to be banned under the new helmet to helmet rules after his brutal hit on Colt McCoy; Dan explains 'The Turtle-izer'; The Cardinals became the best kept secret in the NFL winning five of their last six; Antonio Banderas: we have a job for you; Green Bay continue to 100% after thumping Oakland; Sidney Crosby has relapsed and is now classed as out indefinitely with ‘concussion like symptoms’ - very worrying time for the Penguins; also out with concussion are Claude Giroux, Brad Richard of the Kings, Marc Staal and Chris Pronger - boys play rough; Giroux is out after a knee to the head from Wayne Simmonds, his own player; christmas day start is soon and the NBA is heating up; Training camp passed off with all eyes on Chris Paul. The Lakers trade offer for him was turned down; LA remains Paul’s most likely destination as David Stern plays hard ball for Chris Gordon and the Clippers unprotected first round pick; a bit off-season chatter from the MLB; Corrections and Clarifications; Six Points Christmas Special; Fantasy round-up - several claimes of 'forgotten we were still playing'; Mailbag, Americarnage at Christmas and much, much more...

    Another Place Like Home

    Another Place Like Home
"Wistful contemplation of the sea." "Council bullied into buying scrap." Antony Gormley's Another Place provokes diverse opinion. So what is the value of public art in Sefton?

Through the fictionalised narrative of a pirate radio station, manned by a local with serious spleen against the Iron Men, Phil Montgomery looks for answers.

We follow pupils from Forefield Junior School, in Crosby, who undertook a project to make a musical composition inspired by Another Place. As the Iron Men arrived on Crosby Beach before the pupils were even born, they offer a unique perspective on the artwork and how we can interact with it. They also discuss how they might feel if they had never met the Iron Men — if, indeed, they had moved on to 'another place' as originally planned.

We also canvassed the internet's views on the installation — which, in some respects, marks quite a contrast with the children's experiences.

Meanwhile, at the radio station, another drama is unfolding...

To capture the raw nature of a pirate station, the final version of this piece was recorded by broadcasting the finished track to an unused FM frequency, then re-recording it 'as live' through an actual radio set.

    Inside Music Row 1354-1 News

    Inside Music Row 1354-1 News

Hey everybody!  I'm Jennifer Vickery… so glad you’ve joined us for another Inside Music Row.  We have lots in store for you today, so let’s get started.  The guys from Florida Georgia Line are giving new meaning to their six time platinum hit song “Cruise.”  Instead of a Chevy with a lift kit, they’re moving on up with their own “This Is How We Cruise” music festival at sea.  Look for Nelly, Thomas Rhett, Colt Ford, and plenty of other special guests to get in on the “Cruise.”  Fans are welcome to join them by signing up at F-G-L Cruise dot com.

Legendary newsman Dan Rather recently spent some time in Music City, and was welcomed by the Grand Ole Opry as a special guest announcer.  After taking the microphone, he recalled growing up as a fan of the Opry and country music in Texas.  The Opry is currently looking ahead to the 90th anniversary celebration next year, so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him back soon.

Charlie Daniels is celebrating the release of his new “Off The Grid” album with a new national tour.  Look for the music legend to perform about a hundred dates around the country through the end of the year.  Charlie says that ‘having new material to play on the live show is like pouring a little hot sauce on your morning eggs, just adds a little extra zest to the set.’

Cassadee Pope didn’t waste any tears as she was presented with a platinum plaque at the Grand Ole Opry.  She performed her debut hit “Wasting All These Tears” on the hallowed Opry stage as well as her new single “I Wish I Could Break Your Heart” before being surprised backstage with a plaque and special heart-shaped cake.  Look for Cassadee on the road this summer when she joins Tim McGraw’s “Sundown Heaven Town 20-14” tour.

Top wedding website The Knot dot com has posted its “twelve hottest wedding songs for 20-14,” and Lee Brice’s “I Don’t Dance” was the number one pick.  The song was originally written as a wedding gift to Lee’s wife Sara when they were married last April.  Written about a shy groom’s first dance, they say the song is perfect for dancing, despite the title.

Now it's time to go “Inside The Song.”  Rob Crosby co-wrote a cool track with Rose Falcon and Eric Paslay, which Eric took all the way to number one.  Rob told us all about how “Friday Night” got started.

IMR 1350-2 Eric Paslay #1 Party

Eric Paslay is no stranger to number one hits.  He’s already earned number ones with hits like “Barefoot Blue Jean Night,” “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” and “Angel Eyes” as a songwriter, but he recently hit the top spot on the charts for the first time as an artist with “Friday Night.”  Co-written with Rose Falcon and Rob Crosby, “Friday Night” is Eric’s third single released as an artist since signing with EMI in 2011.  Kelly Lynn caught up with the honorees at a party at the Country Music Association to celebrate that song’s success.
