206: Finding Open Windows When Doors Have Closed with Luz Maria Clayton

206: Finding Open Windows When Doors Have Closed with Luz Maria Clayton

Art can be a mighty tool if you find yourself struggling with mental health. After years of dealing with anxiety and depression, and taking a step back from her work with youth as a result, guest Luz Maria Clayton found an escape in drawing on illustration apps on her smartphone and tablet. When traditional mental health services were not always effective, she found that spending time creating was a powerful outlet for her feelings. Eventually her self-taught art skills and passion for sharing her work with others led to the opening of her own business. Her shop, Arte de Luz, a joint-venture with her mother, is a bright little spot located in the neighborhood where she grew up—a dense urban community known for its cultural diversity. Listen to Luz’s heartfelt story about how involvement in the arts can open up new opportunities for us to thrive when it feels like we've got nowhere left to go.

S2 E9: “Lighting lamps” with Rabbi Mordechai Lightstone

S2 E9: “Lighting lamps” with Rabbi Mordechai Lightstone

Rabbi Mordechai Lightstone is at the cutting edge of the intersection of Jewish thought and technology, having launched projects such as Tech Tribe and NFTorah. The Brooklyn-based rabbi is also one of the key figures spearheading the social media of Chabad.org, the official website of the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

In this episode, Rabbi Lightstone assesses the pluses and minuses of tech and describes his community’s response to the spike in antisemitism against identifiably Jewish people, from the deadly Crown Heights Riot of 1991 to today.

Plus, the podcast takes a look at the far-right group Patriotic Alternative and examines why its latest stunt didn’t go to plan.

    9. The Most Real Parents I've Ever Met - Conversation with Malka and Mendel Groden

    9. The Most Real Parents I've Ever Met - Conversation with Malka and Mendel Groden

Meet Malka and Mendel Groden...the most real parents I've ever met.

I sat down with my friend Mendel Groden and his wife Malka for an up close and honest conversation about their journey together as a couple and as parents.

Hear their unique story of navigating the rollercoaster of emotions that come with fertility treatments, adoption, race, and discovering the miracle that already is.

Mendel and Malka are so refreshingly honest, wise, and fun to listen to.

Oh if only more parents were as real as these two...
