Jo Caulfield, Martel Maxwell and Jamie MacDonald

Jo Caulfield, Martel Maxwell and Jamie MacDonald
'Treasures of The National Library of Scotland' is a new permanent exhibition at the National Library of Scotland on George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. It provides a unique insight into Scotland’s history, culture and people and its place in the world. At the Library we collect and preserve the memory of the Scottish nation on behalf of the people of Scotland.

This exhibition reflects ideas and innovation, creativity and social change from across the centuries. It features objects from early printed books to video installations, and from maps and medieval manuscripts to passports and letters.

This episode features beloved comics, audio from the early 1900s and an often-overlooked heroic explorer. Presenter and journalist Martel Maxwell is an ambassador for Dundee, and it’ll come as no surprise that she’s chosen the archives of one of Scotland’s greatest publishers to discuss. Comedian Jamie MacDonald delves deeper into the audio collection from the exhibition, finding a recording of a fiddler who was nothing short of a superstar in his day. Fellow comedian Jo Caulfield completes the episode, after discovering the diaries of a Scottish explorer, botanist and filmmaker who rivals any of her contemporaries.

    Hosted by Julia Sutherland.

    113: The Highlanders

    113: The Highlanders

“He says he’s a frog doctor, sir.”

Let’s have some fanfic where the Troughton and Whittaker Doctors combine forces to heal a lonely amphibian universe. Actually… let’s not.

No, this is The Highlanders, where you could be excused for thinking the Doctor’s bizarre accent was French and that his hat was a Goth’s traffic bollard.

It’s a second outing for the second Doctor but 18th Century Scotland fares poorly on Cosmic Trip Adviser, with its dog biscuits, corked wine and one-star wet room. And you’ll find the locals unwelcoming and the English tourists somewhat invasive.

But the TARDIS team do indulge in recreational pursuits. Ben swims, the Doctor headbangs, Jamie toys with his dirk and Polly manages to avoid fifty shades of Solicitor Grey.

But did Jim and Martin think The Highlanders was pure dead brilliant or did it warrant the Ff-bomb?

    Listen to find out.

    Ep. 286 - Culloden Battlefield

    Ep. 286 - Culloden Battlefield

The Battlefield of Culloden is under the care of the National Trust for Scotland and can be found in the Scottish village of Culloden. Culloden Village is an ancient town with buildings dating back to the 1600s, one of which is Culloden House that is today a hotel. The battlefield was the scene of the Battle of Culloden that would be the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745. This battle was bloody and causalities were high. This has led to paranormal activity on the battlefield that seems to recreate the battle. Along with this are stories of omens, premonitions and The Scree. Join me as I share the history of the Battle of Culloden and the resulting hauntings of the battlefield. The Moment in Oddity was suggested by John Michaels and features French Stilt Walkers and This Month in History features the first Virginia Company Expedition leaving London. Our location was suggested by Brian Morse.
