93 - My Problem with Winsomeness

93 - My Problem with Winsomeness

In this episode, I share a talk I gave at a recent conference in April of 2023 at Christ the King Church of Cincinnati. Christ the King has launched King’s Domain as a ministry of their church to help bring biblical truth into the public square. The theme of the conference was “Clear Speech for a Confused Age.” For King’s Domain, this was a conference devoted to helping Christians speak plainly the teachings of the Bible for the glory of God and the good of the world.

The talk I delivered was on the topic of winsome third-wayism, a topic which I have discussed several times on this podcast. The talk was given in the style of polemics and I strike a tone which I am sure some might find disruptive, to say the least. My aim was to expose winsome third-wayism as a strategy of cultural engagement which is married to the secular spirit of our age and to equip Christian to think courageously about how to resist and combat this strategy in their churches and lives.

You Don't Need To Open Your Mouth About Everything!

Any time there’s a major issue in culture whether it be current events, politics, trending topics, or maybe something specific to your niche – people inevitably ask YOU as a leader, “what are your thoughts?” We live in an increasing soapbox culture where we hear many leaders say they feel a certain pressure to “post thoughts” or weigh in on current events. Social media has amplified this more than ever and it raises the question —  when is the right time to comment on something, and when should we just say nothing?

84 - Michael Thiessen on Canadian Evangelicals and the Paralysis by Pragmatism of the Church

In this episode, I talk with Michael Thiessen about church culture and evangelical leadership in Canada. We discuss his recent departure from the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists (FEB) and the precipitating events which lead to his exit. There are many questions today surrounding the viability of the evangelical approach to cultural engagement particularly as it relates to politics. We explore the topic of presuppositionalism and biblical sufficiency unpacking the authority of pastors and their responsibility to teach the nations to obey all that Christ has commanded.

Bio - Michael Thiessen, President of Liberty Coalition Canada, lives in Georgetown, Kentucky with his family where he is planting a church called Royal Springs Chapel. He is the former Associate Director of Church Planting for the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists in Canada. He hosts a podcast called Open Mike with Michael Thiessen. A former missionary and experienced church planter, he brings extensive insight into the topics of contextualization, ecclesiology, missiology, denominationalism.

    66 - C. R. Wiley on Contextualizing to a Culture of Death

    66 - C. R. Wiley on Contextualizing to a Culture of Death

In this interview with Chris Wiley, we explore the strategy of contextualization. Church planters and Christians in the 20th and 21st centuries have been thinking about contextualization and attempting to use it as a means to reach people with the gospel. It is the normative approach to being “missional” in the American context.

While the church has always been a people of mission, carrying God’s gospel message to the ends of the earth, in the mid-20th century many Christian thinkers began to reconsider older approaches to Christian mission. Wiley casts doubt on the usefulness and fruitfulness of this endeavor particularly as it relates to a post-Christian culture of death. He ties contextualization to ideological movements in the 19th Century.

Bio from crwiley.com: “C. R. Wiley’s childhood was like something out of a story by Roald Dahl.

It was full of vacancies. He was a ward of the state for a time. (Imagine living at the DMV and you have a sense of what that was like.) And he hated the 8th grade so much that he took it twice.

Fortunately his imagination filled in what life left out. He drew a lot and actually got pretty good at it.

Besides writing for magazines and publishing books he has been a pastor (still is!), a college professor, a commercial real estate investor, a landlord (still that, too!), and a building contractor.

He has been happily married for over 30 years and he has three grown children. He resides in the state of Washington.

He has written for Touchstone Magazine, Modern Reformation, Sacred Architecture, The Imaginative Conservative, Front Porch Republic, National Review Online, and First Things, among others. His most recent book is, In the House of Tom Bombadil (2021). He is also the author of, The Household and the War for the Cosmos published by Canon Press (2019). His short fiction has appeared in The Mythic Circle (published by the Mythopoeic Society) and elsewhere, and the first book in his young adult fantasy series, The Purloined Boy was published by Canonball Books (2017). He is a board member of the Academy of Philosophy and Letters, as well as New Saint Andrews College.”

44 - Dr. Joe Rigney on Sexual Pharisees and Winsomeness

In this episode, Joe and I dive into the contentious topic of culture and Christianity. We discuss various developments in church planting and pastoral leadership. We examine the ways in which ‘winsome’ can be not-so-winsome. And we explore the biblical concept of Pharisaism and how hypocritical pride plays out today.

What does it mean to be winsome today? How has church planting changed in the last 10 years? What does it look like to model the life of Christ in cultural engagement? What is a sexual Pharisee?

Joe Rigney serves as President and Associate Professor of Theology and Literature at Bethlehem College & Seminary (https://bcsmn.edu/profile/joe-rigney/). He is the author of five books. Joe is also a pastor at Cities Church in St. Paul and serves as a teacher at DesiringGod. Beyond teaching, writing, and preaching, Joe loves to play baseball with his three sons and spend time with his wife, Jenny.

    Raising Kids for Holy Worldliness

    Raising Kids for Holy Worldliness

What does it mean to raise our children well? Many of us assume that the best approach is to shield and protect our kids from a culture that has more than its fair share of negative and dangerous influences. We strive to keep them separated from the world. But is that what we should be doing? Jeram Barrs, a professor of Christian Studies at Covenant Seminary reminds us that if we are faithful to God and His word, that’s actually an approach to avoid. He writes, “Our children need to learn that Christ calls us to live in the world and to serve him in the world. We are to work at preparing them to understand the ideas of our time which are in opposition to the knowledge of God. We should be practicing hospitality to unbelievers, the needy, and sinner so that all through their lives our children have involvement in broken people’s lives modeled for them. We need to be like Jesus, friends of sinners, and we should be encouraging our children to be the same all through their lives.”

29 - Negative World Christianity and Tactics to Engage the Hate with Aaron Renn

In this episode with Aaron Renn, we discuss how America has changed in how it understands Christianity. Being a Christian was seen as a positive social attribute for a long time. Now being a Christian is a social liability. How should this change the way we engage in mission? What should Christians do in response to this negative world?
