    Special: Whisky Cup 2020

    Special: Whisky Cup 2020

Episode 133 - The Death of Smooth

Episode 133 - The Death of Smooth

The object of our investigation this episode is the word, “smooth.” We hear used all the time to describe drinks, and yet, most of us would have a hard time pinning down exactly what it means. Some of the topics we'll cover in this hit piece against the word “smooth” include:

    • How and why Eric became suspicious of this word as a descriptor in the spirits and cocktail world
    • A brief history of the smooth vs. rough liquor trope since the mid 20th century
    • The difference between accuracy and precision in language, and why “smooth” can sometimes be accurate, but never precise.
    • A troubling parable involving a major international distilling operation and their recent ad campaign
    • Some thoughts on the truth from a major player in the literature and culture space
    • And much, much more.

Whiskey & Music with Three Chord Bourbon's Neil Giraldo (Episode 742: December 2, 2018)

Neil Giraldo is one of music's "hit makers." As a musician and producer, he's worked with some of rock music's legendary performers to create the soundtrack to our lives since the late 70's. While he's not the first musician to create a whiskey brand, he comes to the whiskey business with more than just a name. He helped his grandfather distill whiskey and grappa as a young boy growing up in Cleveland, and tells us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth that there's a lot in common between producing a hit song and blending a hit whiskey. We'll also have the story of a new world record for the most expensive bottle of whisky, along with new ownership for Cutty Sark, the week's new whiskies, and much more.

For those of you who don't know, I had made a mixtape with this very same name a couple years back & recently a lot of my older mixtapes were wiped from my podcast (not sure how). But out of all the mixes, this one seemed to be missed the most, given all of the E-Mails, texts & even personal visits (not joking) I've received just to get this mix back up. I couldn't restore the old mix back up, so I decided to record another one. It is very similar to the original, but I added a lot of twists to it. Hpe you enjoy it & Happy Valentine's Day! -Ryan Sayeed

    WhiskyCast Episode 418: March 30, 2013

Cutty Sark is marking two anniversaries within a week or so: the brand's 90's anniversary on March 23 and the third anniversary of its acquisition by the Edrington Group April 1. It's a legendary brand that lost its way in recent years, but recorded its first annual increase in sales during 2012 after years of declining sales. Edrington's first move three years ago was to put Jason Craig in charge of turning the ship around, and he joins us for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, we'll have plenty of new releases to talk about from Arran, Balblair, Four Roses, Kilchoman, and more...including a very special Bruichladdich single cask with a lot of sentimental value for former managing director Mark Reynier. This week's tasting notes include a special limited edition Cutty Sark, a single malt from Germany, and a Kentucky classic.

Media Network: 29.05.1998. Broadcasting like the Cutty Sark
Towards the end of May 1998, 150 international broadcasters got together at a hotel golf resort just outside Ottawa for a conference on the future of international broadcasting. It was organised by Radio Canada International together with 6 Canadian Universities and it was the fifth in a series of meetings, all of which have focussed on the future of international broadcasting. Even then, the writing was on the wall for shortwave international broadcasting. Radio Prague in the Czech Republic, for instance, had decided to invest 10% of its programme budget into “new media”. They said they were better able to reach Czechs living abroad using e-mail than their limited shortwave facilities. On the other hand some stations in Asia are actually putting new transmitters on the air although these aren’t being designed in such a way that they could be digitised later. But in the light of the recent decision in October 2010 to fund the BBC World Service in a different way, its interesting to listen to Frits Groothuys who, back in 1998, was responsible for BBC strategy at the World Service in London. He drew a fascinating comparison between international broadcasting and sailing ships like the Cutty Sark. He could not have predicted that the tea clipper he was talking about would catch fire 9 years later, but I think he did forsee that digital shortwave was invented too late.
