Spinning Records and Radio Tales: A Personal Journey in Music and Broadcasting

Spinning Records and Radio Tales: A Personal Journey in Music and Broadcasting

My journey through the landscape of music and radio isn't just a job; it's a collection of moments that have defined me. Radio and concert vet, Jave Patterson and I weave a tapestry with the threads of music formats and the indelible memories they create. We'll reminisce about the rock stations that ruled the airwaves and the program directors who dared to play the untested tunes, tracing the path from early ambitions to the realities of a radio career, including a station's format change that hit close to home.

Grab your backstage pass as we revisit electrifying interviews, including Metallica's Lars Ulrich, where their stories and personalities leapt from the speakers like live notes off a guitar. You won't want to miss the revelations of radio station wars and the awkward interview hang-up that remind us that stars too, are just one of us.

So, whether you're here for the nostalgia, the laughs, or the love of music, I've got a vinyl seat reserved just for you. Get ready to turn the volume up and let the memories play on!

    Orchestral Maneuvers on the Playa

    Orchestral Maneuvers on the Playa

Some people are surprised to learn that Black Rock City is home to not just one but two full-fledged symphony orchestras. While the Black Rock Philharmonic kicks out the classical jams, the Playa Pops brings the big-ensemble sound to popular music.

Both are composed (ahem) of passionate volunteer musicians – classically trained, self-trained, and otherwise – who come together once a year to perform in the dust (or mud) the songs they have practiced all year at home.

In this installment, kbot and Stuart talk to members of the Playa Pops and the Black Rock Philharmonic about their process, their performances, and how the desert hates their instruments. And we get to hear some amazing live music performed by actual humans, recorded live at Burning Man 2023 in the Black Rock Desert.

    Pelle Almqvist of the Hives

    Pelle Almqvist of the Hives

On this episode, Scott sits with Pelle Almqvist, front man of the eclectic Swedish rock band The Hives. They get into the band’s over 30-year-long career, Pelle’s early rock and punk influences like AC/DC and Skid Row, odd jobs he had growing up, and how the band first met and formed when they were in their teens growing up in Sweden. They also discuss the physicality of performing during their incredible live shows, leaning into the overblown showbiz vibe during early gigs, their suit-bearing aesthetic, and the success of Veni Vidi Vicious and songs like “Hate To Say I Told You So.” They explore the making of and some of the songs on the Hives’ latest album, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, including the lore behind the figure of Randy, who has guided the band since its inception. They also talk about the influence of the early punk of the Sonics’, working with Cyndi Lauper and Jack White, and when Pelle threw up at Dave Grohl’s house on New Years Eve. And, of course, in Lipps Service fashion, they wrap up the conversation with Pelle listing some impressive “Top 5s.” Tune in for a witty, insightful, and wide-ranging conversation with one of the coolest front men in rock, Pelle Almqvist!

And, wow, did she WALK!!! Connie was also part of the original Boy Bar Beauties, an iconic cabaret in the East Village, Wigstock, the Too Funky and Divine Thing Videos. She was in the middle of the explosive, exciting and yes, deadly, New York City gay and trans creative world. Not drag, darling, trans. Trans models now have her to thank.

    Women Wrestling Forgot: Wendi Richter

    Women Wrestling Forgot: Wendi Richter

This week we cover one of the most uncontroversial stars of the 80s in wrestling, Wendi Richter. A common response to her name now seems to be "why does that name sound familiar?" WWF/WWE somehow made all of her iconic moments not about her. Wendi Richter was someone who, the more research we did, the more our respect for her & anger on her behalf grew.

Remember Coffee Shop Culture? (with Jewel)

Remember Coffee Shop Culture? (with Jewel)

To celebrate Vanessa's birthday we are joined by a very special guest: JEWEL! That's right, we caught up with the acclaimed singer, actress and author to discuss the era before Starbucks where coffee shops were places to see live music and maybe even see Jewel demo songs that would go onto be nineties radio staples such as "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "Foolish Games." We also discuss Jewel's career journey from a living on a remote homestead in Alaska to becoming a household name, Vanessa and Jewel's mutual love of Cyndi Lauper, how Jewel was able to channel her trauma into lasting art and how she came up with her own mental health curriculum by channeling her own "bunny nature." Finally we play a round of BACK TO THE PRESENT where we reminisce about The Body Shop, Dutch Apple Pop-Tarts and other nostalgic things that Jewel is a very good sport about discussing with us. Be sure to check out Jewel's new album Freewheelin' Woman and the other incredible work she does at jewelneverbroken.com and notalonechallenge.org . If you're looking to be as entertaining as you are inspired, you will not want to miss this episode!
