    21. Should I Invest in Cryptocurrency or Is It a Fad?

    21. Should I Invest in Cryptocurrency or Is It a Fad?

Should we be investing in crypto?! Understanding the deep and confusing world of crypto was something that we were putting off learning. But we kept hearing about Bitcoin, Ethereum, NFTs and blockchain, so it's time to figure out once and for all, if cryptocurrency is an investment option we should be considering.

Now, we are most definitely not crypto experts, in fact we really don't know much about it...so we've asked Darcy Ungaro, Financial Adviser, Host of the NZ Everyday Investor podcast and crypto investor to join us and chat about all things crypto.

In the episode, we chat about:

    • What are cryptocurrencies?
    • Are all crypto created equal or are some better than others?
    • Is cryptocurrency a currency or an investment?
    • How can I expect to make money investing in cryptocurrency?
    • The importance of being diversified in your coins
    • Why the same fundamental financial principles apply to investing in cryptocurrency as they do investing in the share markets
    • How do I know if I'm ready to invest in cryptocurrency?
    • Using crypto in a core-satellite portfolio strategy
    • Where and how would we start investing in cryptocurrency

...plus lots more fun stuff, as always.

Blockchains and Cryptocurrencies: Power, Potential and Pitfalls

Blockchains and Cryptocurrencies: Power, Potential and Pitfalls

Blockchain technology offers the promise of a new era of secure, decentralized transfer of value on the internet—a future less reliant on trusted intermediaries and gatekeepers. Some have described blockchain as Web 3.0, unlocking the true vision of what the internet was meant to be, where users of applications are also the owners. Despite their recent—and signature—volatility, digital assets have grown into a $2 trillion market that extends well beyond Bitcoin and is attracting entrepreneurs, investors and corporate support at an accelerating rate. There is clearly a lot of innovation both in digital assets—or cryptocurrencies—as well as with the underlying blockchain technology. But how much is legitimate excitement about this revolutionary technology, and how much is inflated exuberance?

To explore the potential, and examine some of the questions hanging over the industry, Brown Advisory’s Sid Ahl sat down with three crypto experts: Joe Lallouz, Founder and CEO of Bison Trails (acquired by Coinbase); Ash Egan, Partner, Accomplice; and Ria Bhutoria, Principal, Castle Island Ventures.

Be sure to stay tuned for the Brown Advisory investment team’s perspectives, when Erika Pagel, CIO of Sustainable Investing, and Ken Coe, Financial Services Equity Analyst, join Sid (at 51:00) to share their takeaways.

The Founders' List: The Ethereum Whitepaper

The Founders' List: The Ethereum Whitepaper
This introductory paper was originally published in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, before the project's launch in 2015. It's worth noting that Ethereum, like many community-driven, open-source software projects, has evolved since its initial inception. While several years old, they maintain this paper because it continues to serve as a useful reference and an accurate representation of Ethereum and its vision. From humble beginnings, Ethereum has grown into a well-known and widely used platform. The platform has also been responsible for launching hundreds of other cryptocurrencies and decentralized projects in recent years through a new fundraising mechanism called an Initial Coin Offering (ICO). Vitalik Buterin on Space, Longevity, Mars & More ("The B- Side" with Morgan Beller)
Today we’re releasing the B-Side of our conversation with Vitalik Buterin, highlighting what may look strangely different in the coming decades. Here’s what great Founders know that others do not: What seems weird today may actually be signal of an outsized opportunity ahead. Last week, Vitalik and I took a synchronous-but-separate walk together for 3 hours. I was in San Francisco at 4 pm and Vitalik was in Singapore at 8 am the next day, living in the future in more ways than one. Vitalik Buterin on The Revolt of the Public ("The A-Side" with Morgan Beller)
Today we’re releasing the “A-Side” of a conversation with Vitalik Buterin, known as the creator of Ethereum and is a force behind much of the crypto movement. Vitalik shares his unique points of view on politics, crypto, Americanism, GameStop, and Wall Street Bets, Tesla, China, privacy, The Revolt of the Public, the decentralization of finance and so much more. But Vitalik is much more than just crypto. He is a close friend with a rare ability to see the present and future in a way few others do. With technology now at the forefront of society, the world is transforming faster than ever — and it’s incumbent on all of us to understand where we are, and where we’re going. Coming soon: The “B-Side” of our talk — the outtakes. The weird stuff. The good stuff you don’t get to hear when someone is on stage, on script, or in the media.
