Things Fall Apart - The Roots (Review)

Things Fall Apart - The Roots (Review)

This episode is all about The Roots' fourth studio album, Things Fall Apart, which was released in 1999. It makes the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list at #416.

Physicist, author, blogger and NYC-native Ethan Siegel brings some hip hop credibility to the podcast this episode, helping counteract the rural(ish) roots of Eamon, Sonya and Nathan. Known as "hip hop's first legitimate band," did the music, lyrics and vocals hold up under the toughest of scrutiny? Is this truly one of the greatest albums of all time? Well, you'll have to listen to find out.

During the episode we discuss Ethan's upcoming book - The Encyclopaedia Cosmologica - which you can pre-order here.

    Raphael Saadiq

    Raphael Saadiq

Born Charles Ray Wiggins, "Raphael Saadiq" officially cemented his solo career in 2002 with his debut album "Instant Vintage". A sarcastic title, the album was a nod to the throwaway culture of instant pop music which Raphael believed consumed the mainstream music scene at the time. But this debut release was not the start of his career. His history includes playing in bars when he was just 7 years old, going on tour with Prince when he was 19 years old, being a part of one of the early 90's biggest selling R&B acts and producing for artists including Tupac and Mary J. Blige. Jay and Jesse explore more in this latest episode of Roots to Grooves.

    BONUS - Pino Palladino

    BONUS - Pino Palladino

In this very special bonus episode of Basgasten I'm talking to legendary session bass player Pino Palladino. Pino has been on top of the bass mountain since the eighties, having worked with people like John Mayer, The Who, Nine Inch Nails, D'Angelo and many, many, many more. Pino is an icon in fretted and fretless playing.
I spoke to Pino in March, just after the release of his very first album under his own name: Notes With Attachments. The album features musicians like Blake Mills, Sam Gendel and Chris "Daddy" Dave.

    They're Both Black...

    They're Both Black...

In this inaugural episode, co-hosts and best friends of 20+ years, Jamal Sterling (Jay) and Khalilah Elliott (Kay), comedically discuss everything from why Daniel Day-Lewis' acting is overrated, Jay's beef with Mark Wahlberg, color-blind casting, the ridiculousness and racial biases of awards shows, Judas and the Black Messiah, old school TV shows, wild kangaroos, sexual fluidity, D'Angelo and musical artists who choose to play it safe rather than evolve...

Basically it's an episode chock full of...whatever we want.
