How Consistency is More Important Than Perfection with Michael Ashford of Fit Dad Fitness

How Consistency is More Important Than Perfection with Michael Ashford of Fit Dad Fitness

#021 - This week, I’m joined by guest co-host Michael Ashford of the Fit Dad Fitness podcast. Michael was actually my first guest back on Episode 002, entitled How Asking For Feedback Will Make You a Better Father and Husband, which I highly recommend you give a listen to, because in that conversation not only do you get to learn a ton about Michael, but we dive deep into how men often get in their own way and if we just set our egos aside and sought feedback more often, we’d be way better off.

Michael is back on today to discuss how consistency is more important than perfection, and I couldn’t think of anyone who embodies consistency more than Michael. He’s been working out consistently for 8 years and he’s only recently had to take some time off to recover from surgery.

Throughout today’s conversation, you’ll learn how consistency is more important than perfection and our top 5 tips for being consistent.

    Specifically, we’re talking about:

    • Goal setting
    • Doing things when you don’t want to
    • Understanding that sometimes you have to be extreme
    • Setting reminders and small rewards
    • And making your goal a part of your identity

You’ll want to stick around to the end of the show, where you’ll hear how being consistent will not only help you achieve your fitness goals but will make you a better more present father, as children thrive when their parents are super consistent.

How Community Can Help You Achieve Results Faster

How Community Can Help You Achieve Results Faster

#019 - This week's episode is all about how being a part of a community can help you achieve your results faster.
Whether you're in a fitness rut or struggling in other ways, being a part of a community will help you stay the course when you lose motivation. It's like that old quote, "go alone if you want to go fast. If you want to go farther, go together."
There's wisdom in that quote because we all know intuitively that communities are incredibly valuable.
And so I'm sharing by top 5 benefits of what being in a community has to offer you.
And lastly, don't forget that how you show up or contribute to a community is as important as what the community has to offer you.

Now, while John’s page pokes fun at all things CrossFit, he’s actually a really thoughtful dude who’s trying to bring the CrossFit community together through inspirational posts about transformations, and supporting causes around the LGBTQ community, the Black Lives Matter movement and more.

We taped this conversation just as COVID hit and long before CrossFit’s CEO wet the bed so we didn’t get to discuss all the recent CrossFit news, but nonetheless, I think you’re still going to love this conversation!

60 Pounds in 6 Months with Kyle Borden

60 Pounds in 6 Months with Kyle Borden

#013 On this week's episode, we have Kyle Borden, an Oklahoma State trooper who gets to fly a helicopter around catching bad guys all day. And as badass as that may sound, what’s even more badass is that Kyle is a regular guy like you and me. He’s not a CrossFit celebrity or a coach with like 100k followers on Instagram. He’s a regular guy who I connected with over Instagram and we’ve had a friendly relationship over the months since.

One day, Kyle posted a transformation pic and explained how he lost 60 pounds in just 6-months, and I was seriously astonished. I never would’ve guessed he was 60 or 70 pounds heavier because he’s a pretty fit dude!

I'm excited that he's here to share exactly how he did it.

    Throughout our conversation, you’ll hear:

    • A funny story of how Kyle was initially motivated by wanting to simply look good in a swimsuit
    • The simple tweak he made to his diet which led to losing 6 pounds in the first day
    • You’ll also hear how he asked his wife to support him through this journey
    • How he shed a ton of weight and started to feel better before he even bothered lifting a weight or doing any kind of exercise.
    • And some simple tips and tricks that anybody could do to get started on their fitness journey today!

You’ll want to stick around to the end of the show where we discuss how finding a community of like-minded people can make all the difference between success and failure.

How to Look Good In A T-Shirt

How to Look Good In A T-Shirt

#011 Let's start off by asking you a simple question: what is the goal?

I’m sure you’ve given that some thought to some extent, right? Maybe you want to get into great shape because you want to be healthy and live a long life, or maybe you just want to look good naked.

Whatever your goal is, I hope you’re not setting yourself up for disappointment because you’ve been envisioning yourself with six pack in the next six weeks.

Instead, on today’s show, I’m going to be talking not about how to look good naked or some nonsense. But instead, how to look good in a t-shirt. Because after all, shouldn’t that be the goal?

#010 This week we have Joel Te of As Many Reviews As Possible!

Joel and I have been friends for a few years now over the internet, but I finally had a chance to sit down with him and have an extended conversation about nearly everything under the sun, from fatherhood to social media.

Joel is the man behind As Many Reviews As Possible, which is a one-man operation of non-stop reviews and daily deals of all things fitness-related: shoes, clothing, equipment and so much more!

Today we talk about how Joel's life has changed due to his recently becoming a father and how that's impacted his business, his creativity, and his sleep.

You'll want to stick around for this one because Joel flips the script a few times and actually has a few questions for me that I wasn't really prepared for either.

From Rock Bottom to Rock Solid with Jared Jordan, CrossFit Seminar Staff Member

From Rock Bottom to Rock Solid with Jared Jordan, CrossFit Seminar Staff Member

#008 On this week’s episode, we have Jared Jordan, a CrossFit Seminar Staff Member who co-owns CrossFit of Ithaca with his wife. In fact, Jared was one of the instructors at my Level 1 a while back.

Jared who used to race bikes in a previous career describes how a near-fatal bike accident resulting in traumatic brain injury led to a downward spiral of depression, emotional issues, medications, a loss of identity, and mood swings, which he never fully recovered from which eventually led him to walk out on his wife and newborn son.

Jared believed that his son deserved to be loved by someone who wanted to be his father.

I don’t want to give away too much of this story, because it’s definitely a must-hear, but a big shout out to all the ladies out there who don’t quit on their men.

    Throughout this conversation you’ll hear:

    • How Jared defines being the “Perfect Dad”
    • How being present is just a part of being a perfect dad
    • And that genuinely enjoying what you’re doing while your present with your kid is a far better experience for them in the long run.
    • You’ll also hear Jared’s tips and tricks for anybody struggling to ease into shape
    • And his go-to workouts when pressed for time.

You’ll want to stick around to the end of the show where we discuss how longevity is the name of the game if you want to be able to keep up with your kids throughout their childhood.

Never Go On a Diet Again with Cam Hall of Fight the Dad Bod

Never Go On a Diet Again with Cam Hall of Fight the Dad Bod

#007 On Today’s show, we have Cam Hall, a nutritionist and founder of FightTheDadBod.Ca. In fact, I hired him earlier this year to help me get back on track when I was in a post-holiday rut.

Cam is an overall great guy with tons of positive energy as you’ll hear in the show. And unlike most fitness influencers on Instagram, Cam chose to focus his expertise on nutrition rather than the fitness side of things because of his experience and struggles with finding a healthy relationship with food.

You see, Cam was always known as a fit guy - he played sports in high school and in college and spent extra time in the gym while the other athletes were partying. However, Cam also had this super unhealthy relationship with food. In order to achieve his desired look, he literally ate chicken and carrots for every meal with brown rice for one of those meals for years.

And when he and his wife had their first baby, Cam like most busy dads was overworked, overstressed and he ended up putting on a ton of weight.

In order to get that weight off, he reverted back to his old habits of eating chicken and carrots.

It wasn’t until he went to a seminar where he unlocked the secret to losing weight and keeping it off without cutting calories or fasting.

    Throughout this conversation you’ll hear:

    • how Cam’s relationship with nutrition changed
    • how he’s applying those principles to successfully coach other men to do the same
    • The simple no-frills “PFC Every Three” formula he teaches his clients to use
    • And sample meal plans that you can implement tomorrow

You’ll want to stick around to the end of the show where we discuss how you can implement this no-diet strategy into your family’s routine starting with tomorrow’s breakfast!

How to Keep Up With Your Kids with Austin Malleolo

How to Keep Up With Your Kids with Austin Malleolo

#006 Today we have Austin Malleolo, who’s resume is like one of those never ending cartoon scrolls that go on and on- he’s a CrossFit Games Athlete, a CrossFit Seminar Staff and Flomaster, an affiliate owner with three gyms of his own, a co-owner of the HAM plan, the General Manager of the Reebok Gym in Boston and of course he’s a dad of an 18-month old girl.

And while it was tempting to ask him about his impressive CrossFit Games career I really wanted Austin to share with us how he manages everything on his plate - the resume i just outline - with being a relatively new dad. Because like a lot of you guys, he’s in the thick of it right now.

We recorded this conversation during the height of the COVID Pandemic, while most of us are working from home and sheltering in place.

So in this conversation we discuss Austin’s daily routines, when he works out, how he and his wife split of the parenting so that working from home can still happen, how fitness allows him to be the kind of father that he always wanted to be, and simple tips and tricks for you to get motivated to fight the dad bod.

You’ll want to stick around to the end of the show where we discuss how you can integrate fitness into the family without overwhelming your spouse or kids!

500 Burpees for Time with Tal Short of Reebok

#005 - Today we have Tal Short, a senior product manager at Reebok. Tal is the man behind the Reebok Nanos and tons of other training shoes at Reebok, including the Rich Froning series, the Legacy Lifters, the HIIT TRs, and the guy you want to stalk on Instagram if you want to see exactly how much testing he personally puts into each of his forthcoming shoes. You won’t be able to see any of the shoes because he does a good job of covering them up, but if you pause it just right, angle it towards the sun, you might just catch a glimpse!

In this conversation, we discuss how Tal became the man behind the Reebok Nano, how he and his wife make time for fitness, and how he was able to overcome his struggle with alcohol through faith.

You’ll want to stick around to the end of the show where we discuss how being a part of a community, whether faith-based or fitness-based can help broaden your perspective.
