Succotash Epi326 — Dana Carvey & The Weird Place

Succotash Epi326 — Dana Carvey & The Weird Place

Hello, listener-friend! It’s me, Marc Hershon, executive producer and every-other-weekly co-host of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. You’re here for episode 326 and so am I, where we have special guest Dana Carvey returning and we’re going to talk about his new soundcast that’s just about to drop…but more on that in a moment.

In case you missed last week’s Epi325 of the show, hosted by my unparalleled every-OTHER-weekly co-host Tyson Saner, it was an fantastical half-hour that included a triple shot sampling of soundcasts — in a show entitled “They Can’t All Be Comedy" — from the likes of Word In Your Ear, Going Deep, and Bubble. And see, that first one on the list – Word In Your Ear – that’s a music-oriented soundcast. Because, although we tout ourselves as “THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast”, sometimes we let ourselves stray from the format because that’s what we do. If that pisses you off, you can go listen to…oh, that’s right. There is no other Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. So enjoy!

As I was saying, my special guest this week is none other that Dana Carvey. You know him from his year on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, the short-lived-but-amazing The Dana Carvey Show, Garth from Wayne’s World, The Master of Disguise, comedy specials, and from here – Succotash – where’s he’s been a recurring special guest since we first started in 2011. Heck, he was our very first guest back in Episode THREE. In our chat I say that he last visited us a couple of years ago but, in reality, it was just back in February of this year. And now he’s back!

And for a special reason. Last time he was on he was talking about the soundcast he’d started with fellow SNL alumnus David Spade called Fly On The Wall. Where they interview guests who were either part of the SNL cast or crew, or else were hosts, or musical guests. It’s been doing REALLY well and they’re not only going to do another season of those shows but there might even be a spin-off companion show to that.

But, not satisfied with slicing off that corner of SoundcastLand, Dana is working with his sons, Dex and Tom, and their friend Julian, to create a scripted comedy soundcast. It’s called The Weird Place, and it’s a Looney Tunes tweak of a kind of Twilight Zone concept and it’s going to be dropping very soon. On Halloween day, to be exact.

We talk all about it. So here’s what I’m going to set the table. First, we’ll play a little one-minute teaser that they’ve done for the show. Then I’ll play an ad from our fake sponsor, Henderson’s Pants and their Deathly HalloWear. And then we’ll go right into my chat with Dana.

    Sound good? Let’s go…

If you’d like to follow Dana on his socials, he’s @DanaCarvey on Twitter and @TheDanaCarvey on Instagram.

Remember to catch our action next week for Episode 327 and your erstwhile host Tyson Saner, right here in this very same feed.

In the meantime, if you find yourself struggling to get free of the swamp reeds, the mud and the skeeters while drowning in the fetid waters of Lake Okeechobee in Florida, a giant gator coming at you with jaws agape, and somebody whizzes by on one of those swamp boats with the big fans on the back shouting, “Have you heard anything good lately?!”, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi300: 11 Years of Soundcasting!!!

Succotash Epi300: 11 Years of Soundcasting!!!

Kind of unbelievable - 300 EPISODES! This jumbo-sized installment of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, is being perpetrated jointly by your co-hosts Marc Hershon and Tyson Saner, and features a lot of us yakking back and forth about this show's 11 years of bringing you clips from soundcasts and also many, many interviews with comedians, and soundcasts, and comedian-soundcasters.

We each selected three "moments" from the stockpile of shows, including:

    • The opening few minutes of the second Succotash test show, before there was a theme, an announcer, or even Henderson's Pants.

    • Guest Phil Leirness meeting Bill Heywatt for the first time, live at Stuido P, and participating in a memorable Boozin' with Bill segment.

    • A clip from 2013, and the Smodco Smorning Show, which was the first snippet that Tyson ever snipped for Succotash, which led to him becoming first honorary associate producer, then associate producer, and then his ascension to host.

    • The first time Marc had Tyson on the show as a co-host, and a clip from a soundcast host by Nardwuar, the Human Serviette, and his guest Japp Blonk.

A slice from Episode 173, during the stretch where Tyson had taken the reins as the fulltime host for the show, and his guest Hunter Block, longtime fan, friend, and supporter of Succotash

    • With the last clip coming from a LIVE Succotash show from Los Angeles, featuring Marc hosting, with guest Dana Carvey, his sons Dex and Tom, and Wayne Federman.

Marc and Tyson talk about the past, the present, and the future…where it turns out that Succotash probably isn't going to sound very much different than it does today. The show, as usual, brought to you by Henderson's Pants, featuring their new Parachute Pants.

Thanks to those who have been with us for all, part, or even one show through all 11 years. Please remember to rate and review the show on Apple or Google Podcasts, and go ahead and subscribe if you're not already doing that.

The next time anyone asks if you're listening to anything good, won't you please remember to pass the Succotash?

Succotash Epi289: Catchin' Up with Dana Carvey

Succotash Epi289: Catchin' Up with Dana Carvey

All right, all right, all right. Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host for Succotash is here with you, dear, sweet listener. This is Episode 289 of THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. (What’s a “soundcast” you ask? It’s just a proprietary way of saying “podcast” so that we can sue people for trying to use the term sometime down the road.) I have my first Succotash Chat of Two Thousand and Twenty Two coming up in just moment, with longtime friend of the show Dana Carvey coming up in just a moment.

Before I go any further, and this is getting old having to do this every show, it seems, but another comic great got the light this past week or so. Louis Anderson joins fellow comedians Bob Saget and Norm McDonald in that big green room in the sky. A lot of the funny ones have been getting snapped up recently, which is a shame not only because of the families and friends they leave behind, but because it seems we need them more than ever down her. Thanks for all the laughs, Louie! RIP

Back to business. In case you missed last week’s installment, Epi288, entitled “Busy Showbiz Clips”, hosted by my comrade in soundcasting Tyson Saner, he was rockin’ a trio of soundcast clips from the likes of Resting Bitch with Ali MacofskyHollywood Handbook, and Dead Eyes! Don’t despair – you can still fill your ears with that treasure trove over at Spotify, Stitcher, Apple and Google Podcasts, Soundcloud, YouTube, Amazon Music, or our beloved homesite, SuccotashShow.com – where we feature links to all the shows we feature and as many of the host’s socials as we can find.

This episode, as the title implies, nay, as it clearly states, we’re Catchin' Up with Dana Carvey. Dana has been kind enough to be on the show a bunch of times since we began back in 2011. In fact, he was my co-host of Episode number THREE. So we won’t be covering things like his origins, or the Church Lady, or a lot of other past history stuff – you can find that in the Succotash archives. Instead, we mainly talk about the new comedy soundcast he’s kicked off with fellow Saturday Night Live alumnus David Spade entitled Fly On The Wall, where they interview cast member past and present, former hosts, musical guests, and more. We venture into a few other areas as well, including a little hint of an upcoming narrative soundcast he’s creating with his two sons, Dex and Tom Carvey.

We've got a little taste of the premiere episode of Fly On The Wall, with Dana, David, and their first guest, Chris Rock, getting into relationships and fame…

You can find Fly On The Wall all over the interwebs. They’re currently #1 on Apple Podcasts and probably others. They’ve already hit more than 300,00 downloads a week. And, right after this message from our fake sponsor, Henderson’s Pants, and their new Pedestrian Pants, I’ll be speaking with Dana Carvey himself. Stick around…

I always appreciate when Dana carves out a little time to visit with us. Don’t miss checking out Fly On The Wall. And here are Dana’s Twitter and Insta links.

There are still no calls on the Succotash Show and Runaway Truck Status Hotline but if you WERE to call 1 (818) 921-7212, we would play your message on an upcoming episode of the show. And if you are a comedy soundcaster, you don’t have to wait for Tyson or me to find your program. You can snip off a 3 to 5 minute chunk o’ fun and upload it directly to us at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash. Who knew there were so many ways to get in on the Succotash fun factory?!

I’m going to go before I overstay my welcome. Coming up in this same feed next week will be Tyson with the two hundred and ninetieth episode of this soundcast. If you hang around until after our announcer Bill Heywatt’s closing announcements, I stuck on a couple of extra minutes of me chatting up Dana from the start of our interview. Normally we would have reserved that for subscribers to our Patreon account but I haven’t actually gotten around to activating it yet…so knock yourself out.

Until you hear me again, be good to yourself and others, remember to where a goddamn mask, get your stupid COVID shots for fuck’s sake and, if anyone should happen to stope you in the aisle in the supermarket and ask if you’re heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash?

Succotash Shut-In Epi229: Hitchin' with Dana Carvey

Succotash Shut-In Epi229: Hitchin' with Dana Carvey

Welcome, listener, to Epi229 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package! I am your every-other-weekly host, Marc Hershon, and I switch off this vaunted position with the inimitable Tyson Saner. Last week he presented Episode 228 where he fanned out an array of comedy soundcast clippage, from shows that included Of Course You Realize THIS Means PodcastCave Crew Radio, and The Malliard Report. You can still plug that installment into your ear holes at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, or any number of soundcast distribution points on the web, including both Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, @Laughable, iHeart Radio, YouTube, and places like that.

For this episode, I am once again pushing the mounting stack of clips I’ve gathered off to the side for a second week in a row in order to welcome back a favorite guest of the show as well as a beloved talent from television, film, and the comedy stage — none other that Dana Carvey. Whether you know him from his tenure on Saturday Night Live with characters like The Church Lady, Hans & Franz, or Garth from Wayne’s World, his standup specials, his short-lived self-titled sketch show on ABC, he remains one of the funniest, most potent comic minds of the last 3 or 4 generations.

And, as luck would have it, we have him as our guest coming up in a just a moment. Now, I didn’t get him in a studio or even in a nice quiet place to chat, or even on a Zoom call. What you’re going to hear is a casual conversation that I recorded over Skype via Dana’s cell phone as he was driving this past Monday afternoon down California Interstate 5 from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

As often happens on that stretch that I so lovingly have referred to over the years as The Kessel Run, his cell signal dipped out between transmission towers so we lost a few minutes. You’ll know when that happens because I have inserted a commercial from our longtime fake sponsor, Henderson’s Pants. In honor of Dana’s visit, we’ll be advertising their “Hooray for Hollywood” pants and, when you hear that, you’ll know that we’ll pop back to the interview in progress.

Tyson Saner will be back in the saddle next week with Epi230 and a trio of comedy soundcast slips, and I will be back the week after that with PROBABLY my own collection of clips unless another interesting guest pops up on my radar…and there are actually a few floating around I’m slated to talk to in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, if you’re in the United States like me, best wishes on getting through this post-election madness, the worsening COVID crisis, and probably the weirdest Thanksgiving since the Pilgrims and the Native Americans first sat down for dinner. Please remember to wash your hands, wear a mask, and don’t be a dick or a baby, or a dickbaby, when it comes to following local rules and regs for dealing with the corona virus. And while you’re hunkered down, if some quarantined friend asks if you’ve heard any good soundcasts, please remember to pass the Succotash!

Succotash Shut-In Epi209 Special Presentation: SleeveTalkers (Pilot)

Succotash Shut-In Epi209 Special Presentation: SleeveTalkers (Pilot)

Welcome to Episode 209 of Succotash Shut-In, the Soundcast Stimulus Package. As you may have figured out by now, this soundcast sports TWO hosts, and we switch off episodes every week in order to be able to crank these shows out. The other guy is Tyson Saner, and if you missed out on him bringing you Epi208 last week, where he featured clips from a trio of lovely comedy soundcasts – including Six Seasons & a Podcast, The Bitter Sound, and Deliver Us From Disney, it’s not too late to listen to that installment. It’s available on our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, as well as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app and all over the web.

Diverting away from playing clips from comedy soundcasts this time around, I am bringing you a Special Presentation! Among the things I was working on when I stepped away from fulltime hosting duties of Succotash a couple of years ago was writing and producing a pilot episode for a new comedy narrative soundcast. It was based on a project I had been curating on Twitter for a number of years, dating back to the last year of the administration of President George W. Bush.

Myself and a number of comedy writing minds were on Twitter, tweeting as a contingent of Secret Service agents who were on the overnight shift at the White House. We called this shift the Third Detail, and these agents were not the sharpest tools in the shed.  Our project sort of lost momentum and was more or less abandoned during the Obama Administration but then, in 2017, after Donald Trump took office, I began to realize that maybe there was new life in our old idea. I thought of it as a TV show and pitched that concept to some producers I know. They suggested that if I were to put it up as a soundcast series, we might be able to get some traction and then use THAT as a selling tool for television.

So I worked on a pilot script, with the help of Jeannene Hansen, a San Francisco comedian who had been instrumental in the version of the concept on Twitter. I reached out to a number of talented voice folks to be the cast of the show. And Joe Paulino, our esteemed engineer/producer for Succotash, applied his expertise to pull everything together technically. It took us a couple of months to get everything they way we liked it and I started trying to shop it around to some soundcast networks to see if we could sell it as a show. We got some nibbles, and it even went into contracts with one company but we were unable to come to terms that worked for everyone and so, to date, the show remains in limbo.

    Until now.

I realized the least I can is honor the folks that have helped to make this pilot episode happen by releasing it here on Succotash Shut-In. I want to thank my amazing cast: Matt Weinhold, Joe Paulino, Jeannene Hansen, Kenny StevensonDorien DaviesPhil LeirnessDavian DentLily HollemanCeleste Perry, and a special appearance by Dana Carvey as Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Barack Obama.

I am proud to be presenting the pilot episode of SleeveTalkers: Adventures of the Third Detail without commercial interruption/ I really hope you enjoy it.

Tyson Saner will be here next week for Episode 210 with a rack of comedy soundcast clips, and I will be onboard the week following that with even more clips for your listening pleasure. Until then, wear a mask, wash your hands, don’t be racist, and please pass the Succotash!

    Episode 144: Someone's Favorite Movie

    Episode 144: Someone's Favorite Movie

Let's face it, we all have them - The movies that we know deep down in our heart are bad, but we love them anyway.  Whether its for their nostalgic value or their campy value, we don't care what the world say & we watch them anyway.

That's where Jake and Tom's pal Randy comes in.

You see, in addition to his big dumb comedy show, "Miserable Retail Slave", Randy is the host of a new program called "Someone's Favorite Movie".  In it, he discusses the forgotten classics, the hidden gems, and yes, the guilty pleasures that other shows tend to shy away from.

So listen in as he and the guys sit down to talk about the endurance needed to make it through the "Leprechaun" franchise, the jealousy Jake feels at not being included in this endeavor, as well the strange career of Adam Sandler.

Be sure to help Jake and Tom in their quest for world domination by rating them highly on Apple Podcasts, sharing their stuff with your friends, following them on social media, checking out Tom's guest spots on a certain podcast, and by supporting all of the shows brought to you by the guys' partners in internet radio, Geeks Worldwide!
