Professor Mair Culbreth ~ University of Wisconsin, Neuro Pilates program

Professor Mair Culbreth ~ University of Wisconsin, Neuro Pilates program

When we think about people practicing the Pilates method or Contrology, most likely we imagine heathy bodies engaging their musculature and employing their minds to get the most out of each class. But what happens if the brain is impaired by disease or injury, is it possible for the body to still get the benefits of Pilates?
With us today to answer this question is Professor Mair Culbreth. She is the Director of the Pilates certificate program at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where she also serves as the assistant Professor of the Dance department.

How Dance is Taught / Daniel Levi-Sanchez

How Dance is Taught / Daniel Levi-Sanchez

How Dance is Taught / Daniel Levi-Sanchez

In this episode of DanceCast, Silva interviews the dance educator Daniel Levi-Sanchez. Daniel reflects on his formative years teaching himself street forms as well as eventually receiving more traditional training from the Inner-City Ensemble Theatre and Dance Co., from Juilliard, and from Twyla Tharp herself. Daniel advocates for a teaching style that empowers students instead of isolates them. He muses on how a ballet or jazz class will lose a lot of students if the class is presented in the public schools, or how students who go to a studio often end up dropping out after high school or college. In 2019, Daniel was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and acquired a disability. After successfully completing a dance challenge from an old colleague, Daniel began to revisit dance with a focus on dance teachers with disabilities.

    Text by Emmaly Wiederholt

Daniel Levi-Sanchez, from Paterson, New Jersey, received his formal dance training from the Inner-City Ensemble Theatre and Dance Co. and the Juilliard School of Dance. He performed with Twyla Tharp Dance, American Ballet Theatre, and ODC/San Francisco and is a dance educator with a master’s degree in Education from Rutgers University. Daniel has taught ballet and modern dance at Rutgers University, Raritan Valley Community College, and for three years at PS 191, The Paul Robeson School in Crown Heights Brooklyn. In 2019, Daniel was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disorder brought on by an autoimmune response resulting in permanent disability. Today, Daniel is focusing on his health first, as well as finding ways of remaining involved in the dance community through advocacy for teachers with disabilities, advice for dancers and teachers, writing and testing the limits of what he can and cannot do in the hope of someday being able to teach again. Daniel currently resides in Kingston, Rhode Island.

What Movement Means to the Student / Rachel McCaulsky

What Movement Means to the Student / Rachel McCaulsky

Rachel describes how she had always wanted to teach special education, but her path led her on a professional dance track first. She eventually switched careers to public education through the New York City Teaching Fellows Program. To her surprise, her principal (no “s”) requested she teach movement and dance across multiple school sites instead of general education serve as a classroom teacher, so she became a dance educator to students with severe disabilities. That experience restructured how she thought about movement, what movement means to students, and what goals benefit them. The inquiry led Rachel to become passionate about writing dance curriculum that infuses academics and developing creative assessment tools.

    Text by Emmaly Wiederholt

Rachel McCaulsky (MSEL, MST, BFA) is the arts coordinator, remote learning unit coordinator, and movement teacher at P396K, a New York City Department of Education District 75 school servicing students with severe to profound disabilities. She incorporates movement into the school’s curriculum, creating units of study that fuse literacy and social studies with dance. Her movement units have been published multiple times in the NYC Department of Education Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance. Rachel holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership, a dual master’s degree in Childhood Education and Childhood Special Education, and a bachelor’s degree of fine arts in Dance. Ep. 2 Teaching Acro During the First Lockdown - Kelly Peterson

Ep. 2 Teaching Acro During the First Lockdown - Kelly Peterson

The founder of acrobatic arts Mandy Yip interviews certified teacher Kelly Peterson. Kelly shares her struggles as well as her successes with teaching acro online. Learn how she survived teaching during the first lockdown and actually increased her class sizes!

Kelly Peterson is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of guiDANCE experience. guiDANCE is the only YPAD certified dance competition in the world. It is more than a competition it is an educational experience. She is an Acrobatic Arts Module One certified teacher, and certified to teach Rhythm Works Integrative Dance. Recently she received her Module One certification from Alixa Flexibilty. Kelly is an office manager, Wingman for Dance mentor, and fundraiser coordinator for Dancer's Studio in Clarion, PA. She is YPAD (Youth Protection Advocates of Dance) certified, is a mandated reporter, healthcare CPR and first aid certified and has all clearances. Safety is one of Kelly's top priorities with students. Kelly has worked in tabulation and the administrative side of many dance competitions over the years. One of her many goals is to give dancers the opportunity regardless of financial situation and to educate dancers about compassion, kindness, resilience, internet & social media safety, and confidence. Kelly helps with many nonprofit organizations in her community. She is continuing her education to help ensure the physical safety and psychological and emotional health of each dancer.

During 2020 my goal was not only to bring in revenue but to keep our kids happy, healthy and safe. Not just physically but mentally as well. I took my business background and my nursing degree along with the tools that acrobatic arts provides to create “Acro punch cards” and “4 Week Online Acro Training”

4-Week online Acro training required each student to purchase their level of my Acro app and four 30 minute zoom private lessons.

Acro punch cards started when one on one instruction was permitted.

From June till December we sold over 500 one hour private sessions.

If you charged $20 and hour thats $10,000

    $30X500=$15,000

    $40x500=$20,000

I can't express how much the acrobatic arts app is an essential tool for instructors and students.

Dancer's Studio is owned by A-Jo Gallagher, also an acrobatic arts certified teacher. Because of the Acro punch cards we have increased our Acro class enrolment to 65% of all our students. We added another Acro class this past fall and they are now all completely full. Acro Island has been implemented in some of the classes as needed.

In addition to these punch cards I did a special Black Friday card for younger students or students that never have taken Acro classes. These sold out in 5 minutes.

All of my punch cards were created using Adobe Spark.

Ep. 1 Expert Advice on Auditioning - Rick Tjia

Have you ever wondered how to leave a good impression during an audition? Do you struggle to find the words to say to your student after an emotional audition? What about video auditioning? Video auditioning is quickly becoming even more necessary during these crazy times!

Rick Tjia's inspirational talk about auditioning is something you definitely won't want to miss! He provides us with an insight into what casting directors are looking for, a healthy way to accept audition set backs and gives us his top tips for producing a successful audition video.
