    Episode 33: MirrorMask

    Episode 33: MirrorMask

"I'm a very important man. I have a tower." This week, Ben and Will review the 2005 Jim Henson Company fantasy film, MirrorMask. This strange and trippy movie was penned by famed writer and storyteller Neil Gaiman and directed by artist Dave McKean. Join us as we enter this bizarre CGI world and try to make sense of a rather...interesting plot. The Space to Carol spectrum debate heats up with this one as both the Puppet Masters have very different takes on this unusual cult film.

Pencil Us In 56 - Sandman (and Books of Magic!)

Pencil Us In 56 - Sandman (and Books of Magic!)

In which we discuss some work by Neil Gaiman!  Sandman recently hit Netflix and we decided to get a little topical!  A few weeks later, but better late than never, eh?  We discuss how the book came together, we talk about themes, we talk about another book that Neil Gaiman did as well called Books of Magic!  This isn't a super-deep dive, but it should be fun nonetheless!

What do you think?  Do you have something to say?  Wanna tell us what you think of our current topic?  Have other things to say about other topics?  Wanna tell us some sweet recipes for cookies (please)?  Let us know!  We have social medias!  If you see the deranged pencil, you're in the right place!  I also check my email now!  I promise!  You could also give us a rating and comment on your favorite podcast aggregator!  Talk to us!

We also read some cool magazines with articles and stuff!  Wanna know which ones?

Back Issue Magazine (TwoMorrows Publishing): 57

    The Comics Journal (Fantagraphics): 155, 163, 169

What comics did we cover for our topic?  Take a look!

    Sandman (DC/Vertigo): 1-32

    Books of Magic (DC/Vertigo): 1-4

NOTE:  I could have gone waaay more in depth with this thing had I desired it, but I didn't desire it.  Gaiman is a prolific guy in several mediums with a million words written about him and his works.  I felt like just going over what I thought was interesting about his work without getting overly analytical.  Anyway...

Why Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Comic Book Was Ahead of Its Time

Why Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Comic Book Was Ahead of Its Time

Why is Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman the most important comic book series of all time?

Fortress of Solitude’s Sergio Pereira is joined by SFF author and editor Nerine Dorman to discuss the importance of Morpheus, Dream of the Endless, and how Gaiman’s work with his various collaborators created comics beyond the norm.

From changing DC Comics to becoming a centrepiece of Vertigo Comics, The Sandman signalled a change of guard for the industry. Along with Dave McKean’s jaw-dropping covers and outstanding artwork from the likes of Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, there’s no denying that this is one series that every comic book fan should read at least once in their lifetime.

Listen to the latest episode of the Fortress of Solitude podcast and let us know what you think about it. While you’re at it, don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and visit the website for all your geeky needs.

Episode 88: On Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean's 'Mr Punch'

Episode 88: On Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean's 'Mr Punch'
Before Coraline, before American Gods, in the early days of the Sandman series, Neil Gaiman collaborated with Dave McKean on some truly groundbreaking graphic novels: Violent Cases (1987), Signal to Noise (1989), and the work discussed in this Weird Studies episode. The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr Punch (1994) is the story of a boy whose initiation into the dark realities of life, death, and family plays out in the shadow of the (in)famous Punch & Judy puppet show. Unlike some of Gaiman's more overtly marvellous offerings, Mr Punch is a subtle fantasy whose weirdness hides in the gaps and folds of lost time. It is in Dave McKean's brilliant art that the magic shines through, letting us know that the narrative is only part of a vaster, hidden thing. In this episode, Phil and JF discuss the themes, ideas, and mysteries of an unparalleled piece of comics art.
