    S5E3 -- The World’s first Ultraman : Kurt Madden

After walking into Tug’s Tavern Swim, Run, Swim event and finishing 30th out of 400 – a young Kurt Madden thought, ”maybe I can hang with these people”.

A few years later he was regularly travelling to Hawaii to compete in Ironman and Ultraman races.  In fact, Kurt was the first winner of Ultraman in 1983.  He shares some stories of the early days in Hawaii and how it was viewed as a fad.

He has podiumed as an age grouper more times than can be counted and has three top 10 finishes at the Ironman World Championships when he raced as a pro.

Kurt currently races in the 65 - 69 AG and just returned from the Ironman World Championship in Nice where he finished 12th in his age group.  We discuss his racing experience and he shares numerous tips for success in Nice.   As a coach, and coach trainer with TriDot, his answers often tend toward helping the listener be a more successful athlete.

The fight for Black farmers comes to Washington

The fight for Black farmers comes to Washington
In 1920, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all farms in the U.S. Today, they own just 1.6 percent. POLITICO’s Ximena Bustillo breaks down the century of discrimination that led to that decline — and looks at newly invigorated efforts to undo the damage. Plus, Rep. Judy Chu says she’s concerned the Atlanta shootings suspect won’t be charged with a hate crime. And Sen. Susan Collins avoids censure from her state party. Ximena Bustillo is a legislative reporter for POLITICO. Jeremy Siegel is a host for POLITICO Dispatch. Irene Noguchi is the executive producer of POLITICO audio. Jenny Ament is the senior producer of POLITICO audio. Read more: Black farmers look to Congress, Biden to dismantle ‘culture of discrimination’

“Write what you're writing as if it's the last thing you will ever write, don't save anything, just put it in there.”—Matt Fitzgerald

If listening in on one man’s passions is inspiring, then this conversation is three times better.

Jon, Bryan, and Matt all share a love for the written word and clocking in the miles. Here they compare notes on crafting poetry, elite-level training principles, and not settling for doing things you don’t want to do.

(2:47) Growing up in New Hampshire, Dad’s influence, and what goes into running and writing careers…

(6:18) “...what every writer can be, is UNIQUE... you can do something that only you're doing…” And the best advice for writers…

    (8:44) Lockdown coping through poetry…

(11:18) A singular purpose started in third grade…

(14:05) What having a low tolerance for doing stuff you don’t want to do can accomplish…

    (22:16) A big regret…

(31:34) Do you interrupt a rhythm of being productive? And what does it mean to pace your writing?

(36:22) Running the Dream, Iron War… and finding a writing stride…

(42:15) “...it's not about how much money I make or how much success I have or all the things I accomplished that matter to me. The only thing that I'll be able to take it to my grave is how I make people feel.”—Trevor Noah

(45:56) George Plimpton, Running the Dream, an experiment, and being relatable…

(51:24) The desire to join the sub 2:40 club…
