Well, it's a four parter anyways. 2014 was for me, a classic year for horror movies, Some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, balderdash! The highs are really high & the lows can be quite messy. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2014? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. This episode is all about the Holy Land, Israel. Brian and Will detail their experience leading a church group through Isreal. With visits to Tel Aviv, Tiberias, The Dead Sea, The Sea of Gallilee, and Jerusalem. Visit sites like the Temple Mount, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Wailing Wall.

Our trip follows the footsteps of Jesus, from his birth in Bethlehem to his first ministry in the area of Galilee and finally to the site of his crucifixion. 

Is Israel safe? How often is it attacked? Should you go? These all are important questions that The Travel Agents answer in this episode. 

In 1878, a Jerusalem antiquities dealer named Moses Wilhelm Shapira acquired a curious biblical manuscript consisting of sixteen leather strips. The manuscript, written in ancient, Paleo-Hebrew contained what appeared to be a form of the Bible’s Book of Deuteronomy but with significant variations. It was allegedly discovered by Bedouin tribesmen around 1865, east of the Dead Sea, in a remote cave, high above the Wadi Mujib (biblical Arnon). Shapira believed that his manuscript was both ancient and authentic. In 1883, he presented his scroll to the leading scholars of Europe. Newspapers around the world covered the unfolding story as scholars debated the genuineness of the leather strips. Ultimately the scroll was deemed a forgery and Shapira the forger. However, beginning in 1947, ancient scrolls discovered in the Qumrane cavs near the Dead Sea lead us to ask—were the critics wrong? The Moses Scroll documents the details of the entire saga based upon what we know today including a chronological telling of the fascinating story based upon 19th-century reports; an assessment of the genuineness of Shapira’s scroll; a new transcription of the manuscript as seen through the eyes of the 19th-century’s best Hebraists; and the author’s own translation of the original sixteen leather strips with a commentary and notes.

Ross K. Nichols is a researcher, writer, educator, and author of The Moses Scroll and a popular blog related to emerging Shapira research. He has traveled extensively to Israel over the past decade and participated in archaeological excavations in Jerusalem and at Biblical Tamar south of the Dead Sea, where he has mapped and surveyed the desert regions of the Negev associated with biblical narratives

Masada comes from the Hebrew word Metzad and this means fortress. It is basically a fortress that was built on top of a rock plateau. It is located very close to the Dead Sea and it is a bit south of the Westbank, so it is not accessible to Palestinians from the Westbank currently.

The fortress was built in the time of Herod the Great who prepared it to be able to withstand a long siege. The rock plateau had palaces, water cisterns, storage halls, workshops, residencies for generals and barracks for soldiers and even a Roman bathhouse.

The most famous story about Masada is that of the Roman siege in 73 AD when a group of Jewish Zealots who rebelled against the Romans, had taken the mount and decided that in case the Romans would take Masada, they would commit suicide.

This story is only known from one written account, by the Jewish apologist Flavius Josephus.

New research has shown that the ramp that the Romans started building, never reached the top of Masada. This really challenges the common understanding of HOW the Roman siege of Masada ended. Nevertheless, this is the story that is told by tour guides to the large amounts of visitors that visit Masada.
