    Who are The Grateful Dead?

The Grateful Dead was an American rock band. Formed in 1965, the band was known for its eclectic style, which fused elements of country, folk, jazz, bluegrass, blues, gospel and more. Pioneers of the “jam band” subgenre, the Grateful Dead were known for lengthy live performances and a devoted fanbase, known as “Deadheads.” The band was ranked 57th by Rolling Stone magazine in its The Greatest Artists of All Time issue, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and a recording of their May 8, 1977 performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2012. The Grateful Dead has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide. They have two albums on the 2020 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list - American Beauty at #215 and Workingman’s Dead at #409.

    What is American Beauty?

American Beauty is the fifth studio album from American rock band The Grateful Dead. A record that includes some of their biggest hits - “Friend of the Devil,” “Ripple” and “Truckin’” - American Beauty was a commercial and critical success. It also has staying power, hitting #19 on the Billboard 200 in 2020. It has made each edition of the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list, rising from #258 in 2003 to #215 in 2020.

3.6 - Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead)

Jerry Garcia was a founding member of the legendary Grateful Dead, and one of the greatest guitarists of all time! He was involved in the counterculture movement of the 1960's, but all of the experimentation coupled with diabetes led to his death at the young age of 53. deathbypodcastteam@gmail.com

Episode 34: Grateful Dead & Prog Rock Guru Barry Smolin

Barry Smolin has been a fixture on public radio station KPFK in Los Angeles for more than 25 years. His first show, “The Music Never Stops,” was a Sunday-night destination for Deadheads. His latest program, “Head Room,” is a wide-open venue for exploratory rock, be it psychedelic pioneers such as the Dead, contemporary jam-rock, healthy doses of vintage progressive rock, new music from myriad experimental, improvisational, accidental, avant-freak, arty-smarty pop, and psychedelic cabaret artists. On this week’s KMB, Barry talks about the music that shaped his tastes as a kid growing up in LA.

Open hearths & Deadheads: One chef's love affair with the Grateful Dead

Chef Miles Borghgraef might be known for his open hearth live fire cooking at Birch + Butcher; but his talents and passions for cooking take a backseat to one thing only: the Grateful Dead. His is a love affair that began from an early age and has persisted and evolved over the years.

During this week's podcast, we chat with him about the origins of his identity as a Deadhead, the albums and songs that rock his world and the ways in which the Grateful Dead have managed to influence his life and work in the restaurant industry. Listen in for passionate discussion, big laughs and a special "Grateful Dead Minute" read by Borghgraef himself.
